Wow. I thought this would be a mediocre effort to cover an inspiring song, but it is truly unique in its approach and style. This version is as effective as the original in many ways. Different genre, same meaning. Epic cover. Thank you Joy Division; thank you Moby.
the only thing i liked was the cello. Seriously, Moby seems like he is dead or something, just incredibly soulless, he mistakes the lyrics and sings with a really huge lack of power and emotion. Come on, this is the most melancholic, the saddest, the deepest song in the entire world, feel it, dig it, eat it, be it.
@Letes92 ...uh?? actually I didn't read your opinions about the song, wasn't interested. :P What I said was just an answer to a previous one of yours to a comment of mine.
Bravo! Don't listen to these assholes. I am obsessed with JD but that doesn't mean I don't think people shouldn't cover them. Ian was a man not God, he would have loved the attention!
Not sure if i'm more embarrased about being at the sellout attention whore moby dick's video or his terminally dull "rendition" of the one & only JD, but you would be more rewarded to view John Frusciante's truly solo, stripped down informal tribute.
Only problem I have with this version of the song is that it's sung by a guy who's a millionare without a care in the goddamn world vs a clerk from macclesfield who was living in emotional turmoil and a great deal of pain.
While I can appreciate the respect and a nod to his taste in music, the passion, pain, and quiet desperation simply do not translate in this version.
@Letes92 The point I was making about the money is that I doubt Moby has many worries. he's a wealthy guy singing songs created by a guy that worked as a clerk and trying, or rather failing, to convey the emotions he finds in the original.
@Letes92 If you believe that, I would propose that you do not understand what this song is trying to convey. it's in regards to relationships, introspection, and inner conflict.
There is a movie called "control" about the life of the original writer, if you watch it, this song and it's meaning will be much clearer.
and inner conflict etc gets solved by money? "something more/something else" doesnt have to be meant jobwise. i dunno if ian curtis stated something about the song..but it can be meant in a monetary/jobwise-way as well as a spiritual one (sorry for my english). im not someone who denies that money makes happy but for me this song tries to convey things that nobody has the answer or solution to, because there are simply none..nonetheless humans are trying to find them
@Letes92 Actually I believe it was about the conflict of him having a young wife and child and being responsible for them as well as feeling guilty for being in love with another chick who was into him for his fame.
His being in the band, giving his all during the performances, the song is quite literal.
I won't argue about money making people happ, but I think in this case, it was outside of what money can buy.

@PaulGrantDesigns everybody has an opinion... but this is different... every human loves beauty and aesthetics. You just have to give joy division another listen. Having said this: Moby's cover is absolutely terrific. Really nice nostalgic touch he has going on with those cello's. Lacks that energy but is beautiful for it's very own reasons.
This is a very good version. To try to copy the original would have been stupid, but he got the point of the song; the minor chords, the restrained singing, the heavy bass. This version of the song is different. That's what makes it so good. Its also worth remembering that the band playing this version are much better musicians that Joy Division ever were.
Oh, and for the record, I thought Joy Division were the best band in the world - ever, when I was 15. I'm now 45 and I still do
this version is so fu ckin stupid, moby is stupid, su cks so much... fu ck moby fu ck ur mon, fu ck this world, fu ck fan moby, fu ck fu ck fu ck assoles, moby su ckkkkkkkk
@pauleau They need to realise that covers don't have to sound like the original. It's almost like they believe it's some sort of holy law that Joy Division shouldn't be covered.
I agree with you, Moby has made this song his own and it is incredible, the best I've heard.
In the second verse, Ian always built up the song in order to reach a climax. When he sang, "It was me, waiting for me, hoping for something more. Me, seeing me this time, hoping for something else", he would always go all out and sing his heart and soul out.
Moby didn't build the song up at all. He totally butchered it to pieces. How disappointing. Ian is rolling over in his grave.
bit harsh arnt we? well if you can do any better then post a response. moby inst Ian. how you do a cover is sing it your way. to say "i respect you and your music influenced how I play" Devo covering the rolling stones satisfaction is a good example.
The pain and the anger is completely lost in this version. dont get me wrong i have a great ammount of respect for moby as a musician but this is the wrong song totally. the original (and to a lesser extent john frusciante's version) managed to capture anger, pain, aggresion frustration everything. this just doesnt. sorry moby.
Moby actually brings some peace to this troubled poem. But the original feeling is located somewhere far away in another Universe. The truth is: Curtis was one of a kind, and nothing will ever change that.
It's actually not bad, but Moby is a reasonable man. That makes all the difference. Its done with the right attitude eg " okay, I'm not Ian curtis , I'm a small middle class north american but I can give it some respect" I Like it.
Analyse this listen 2 the song if u don't like it go find what u do like or better still get the original, moby is helping to get Ian Curtis's Lyric's 2 more people, now please tell me what's wrong with that????
@ag65qrbk i did adapt. three cheers for google translate. its not the issue of what a cover is, it's that you should only cover songs that are close to your heart, songs that you can twist with how you feel about them. new dawn fades is clearly very close to moby, and he plays it very solemnly. the strings player, however, had no feelings toward the song and therefore gave it no soul
I got the tribute album that he originally did this for called "A Means To An End" in 1995. Didn't pay much attention to who was on it,and I always thought "that's a really good cover of New Dawn Fades". It's only years and years later that I read the back of the CD and discovered it was Moby. I have a new respect for him as a result.
Stanton Miranda's cover of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" on that same album is also surprisingly good; although very very different from the original.
Moby, you know, i knew Joy Division a few months ago (I'm also 17) and got interested in your art a little bit earlier and i'll tell you something : Moby you're a worthy descendant of Joy Division.

Nice try to associate yourself w/ greatness, moby the dick, but you can never do justice to the great talent that still is Ian C. & JD because great talent is not always measured in record sales.
I pretty much hate Moby, and this movie reaffirms it. Covers are usually shit enough. If the artists adds their own touches, and really makes the song their own, they can be pretty decent (see: Jack White on Jolene), but he is a fucking Hack, and on top of it, he tries to mimic (and fails miserably) Ian's haunting gloomy tone instead of taking the song in a new direction.
It kills me how sometimes artist think they are being positive by saying they are not Patriotic. You don't have to be a stereotypical, racist, hateful American to be Patriotic. It might be nice to see Moby be more thoughtful about how many Americans fought and died in wars or other wise to protect all the freedoms and comforts we have as Americans. Just a little more respect and a little less arrogance might be nice.
@blackbird69xxx You obviously completely missed my point. I will explain it to you again even though I am probably wasting my time with your feeble brain. My point was America is not just our government and the White House....it is the people, even Moby. America stands for more than our government it stands for the music we made, the movies, the inventions....everything.
@Flipper79able They're confusing nationalism with patriotism, basically. Louis de Berniere once said that the nationalist is the greatest traitor to his country because he is blind to its faults and can therefore play no part in helping to set them right. A patriot loves his country like a father loves his son; he sees its faults and seeks to correct them. Part of that involves criticisms. So Moby is definitely a patriot; it's just that the word 'patriot' has become such a loaded term.
@YakChap Okay.......if all of that is true (I didn't look any of it up) than I think being a patriot is a good thing. Blind obedience is a negative trate when it comes to your country. I also think there should be a separation between disliking your government and it's choices and actually disliking your country. I love America and would never burn our flag but I disagree with politicians regularly. Moby should do a little research. Maybe I should too. At least I'm not too smug to know that.
@Iamfukenripped What do you want to tell me?At the first my comment was wrong posted!2nt.Moby is amazing and maked a very nice tribute, but it is not JD that was the only one thing that I whrote!!!And not MOBY is shit or somethink others.I LOVE Moby anyway please do not whrite when u dont know what is going on, and u find that Joy D. are shit!!!Okay this is your opinion and thats it!its just stupid what u`r doing!
hay una pagina de un loco ingles q se llama algo como remember ian o algo asi, en el inicio de la pg te habla de lo q fue ver en vivo a joy y como las letras te volaban la cabeza
Pretty good tribute to the legend that is Ian Curtis... however, does anybody feel that Moby looks a little tired here?? Just that his eye movements seem to suggest tiredness... maybe it's just me but there you go!
@Morgahtr hmm I'll have to disagree with you, he plays Bass and Guitar part on 1 instrument, I mean John Frusciante...you should listen to his Joy Division Cover band Still...the band Includes Flea and Josh
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well, everyone has their own taste in music...Moby, you suck-this version sounds so commercialized and forced...
as if something britney spears would do. No talent.
Deathcamps version, soulless and empty, um isn't that the point of the song, the desperation of the whole song? So much more power and feeling to it than even the original..maybe it was just ian curtis's voice that made it so off....
A Loaded gun won't set you free? Apparently it did. Just my humble opinion.
@MsGraveRobber Music like this isn't even any more about that much taste... it's about aesthetic values. Newton and Einstein. Room and Time.Just lean back and feel the nostalgic touch that the sparkled celloplayer leave behind. Remembrance to one of the few geniuses. This is from a perspective of a fan that sees his great hero to go into tragedy and sums that up afterwards, not about moby trying to give that huge song the same power and vibe like the original.
some song are NOT to be touched by others.streets of sorrow/birmingham six from the pogues for example. i allways this was another but Moby is treating this with all the respect it deserves and he should get ,in his turn ,get all respect for his part . so very well done Moby!!!

This is one of the most beautiful cover tributes to Ian Curtis I,ve ever heard, actually cry for him RIP Ian

@Flipper79able America has bombed the shit out of nearly every 3rd world country going.. so open ur lil eyes sheeple..
Moby rocks !!!
blackbird69xxx 1 year ago
@blackbird69xxx You obviously completely missed my point. I will explain it to you again even though I am probably wasting my time with your feeble brain. My point was America is not just our government and the White House....it is the people, even Moby. America stands for more than our government it stands for the music we made, the movies, the inventions....everything.
Flipper79able 1 year ago
@Flipper79able America has not been in a relevant war since WW2.
johnjohnmajortom 1 year ago
@johnjohnmajortom I agree, but you have also missed the point. Why the hell can't people read what I've said. I refuse to explain it to you.
Flipper79able 1 year ago
@Flipper79able They're confusing nationalism with patriotism, basically. Louis de Berniere once said that the nationalist is the greatest traitor to his country because he is blind to its faults and can therefore play no part in helping to set them right. A patriot loves his country like a father loves his son; he sees its faults and seeks to correct them. Part of that involves criticisms. So Moby is definitely a patriot; it's just that the word 'patriot' has become such a loaded term.
YakChap 11 months ago
@YakChap Okay.......if all of that is true (I didn't look any of it up) than I think being a patriot is a good thing. Blind obedience is a negative trate when it comes to your country. I also think there should be a separation between disliking your government and it's choices and actually disliking your country. I love America and would never burn our flag but I disagree with politicians regularly. Moby should do a little research. Maybe I should too. At least I'm not too smug to know that.

@Slippy71 He used all sorts of surnames back then when being announced or credited. But Id say the majority of people would know him by Sumner.

I am not Patriotic by the way. That almost pisses me off as much as someone telling me how patriotic they are. Shut up Moby, I am not impressed.

@Morgahtr hmm I'll have to disagree with you, he plays Bass and Guitar part on 1 instrument, I mean John Frusciante...you should listen to his Joy Division Cover band Still...the band Includes Flea and Josh

MsGraveRobber 1 year ago
@MsGraveRobber Music like this isn't even any more about that much taste... it's about aesthetic values. Newton and Einstein. Room and Time.Just lean back and feel the nostalgic touch that the sparkled celloplayer leave behind. Remembrance to one of the few geniuses. This is from a perspective of a fan that sees his great hero to go into tragedy and sums that up afterwards, not about moby trying to give that huge song the same power and vibe like the original.
