  • De Beers was a ruthless monopoly which was nothing short of criminal. Hell they even created the value attributed to these rocks. You can grow diamonds in a lab these days, they are not as rare as you think. Its only they buy new mines to keep supply low. If you want rare get gold which is an pure element. Diamonds are just compressed carbon. They also use anti competitive practices all the time. Like flooding the arket with smaller carat diamonds. In response to a new small carat diamond mine.

  • @TheMrApothesis How is that anti-competitive? If anything, it's better competition. The competitors are free to do the same or better. I know you're just bitter because this company is more successful than you'll ever be, but stop your crybaby bullshit.

  • @Supermassively Sorry should of said it's how they protected their monopoly. Not exactly anti competitive in itself. However flooding the market with smaller diamonds in an attempt to 'devalue' a particular Russian company that produced smaller carat diamonds from Russian mines is. My question to you is why you bother protecting the industry? I'm not lying when i said that they can grow diamonds in labs. They say that in the future they will be able to create even bigger stones.

  • we played this song (paladio) in my orch. Concert and i didnt eveb know it was from a comercial

  • The only reason im looking at this is because my orchestra is playing Palladio :)

  • @44Prins44 mine too!

  • I'd rather have my husband buy me The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim =)

  • @HexSabre Best Wife ever.

  • I got my wife a huge chunk of graphite! It's only one carbon atom away from being a diamond you know :P

  • DIAmond industry going down....2012...good bye DIAblo...

  • @circusoflife Nope, it's doing just fine.

  • i think men should buy diamonds for a only a handful of things engagement ring, maybe a wedding ring, first year aniversary, tenth year, 25th, and 50th if you get that far. the fact that this society has become so materialistic is shameful. honestly how well will that jewelry help you out in life except to trade in for cash to buy useful, practical, functional items like food water and shelter

  • Diamonds... she'll pretty much have to. =)

  • @orkid682 diamonds are forever. De Beers, one of the most evilest corporations in the world, knows that people such as Americans would buy diamonds and they know diamonds is what fuels most wars in Africa.

Btw to anyone else who reads this, look it up. I learned about them through these songs which some of you may heard or already know about.

    1. Conflict Diamond - Lupe Fiasco

    2. Diamonds are Forever - Kanye West

    3. Blood Diamonds - Nas

    4. Diamonds are Forever Remix - Jay-Z

  • Diamonds are a way of saying. Honey, I dont know you well enough to get you a gift you would really enjoy. So heres a really shiny expensive rock.

  • @mercmarc lol!

  • they should show the kid getting robbed for the diamond

  • this scared the shit out of for some reason as a kid

  • PLEASE TELL ME THE NAME OF THIS SONG!

  • @NYCest2010 Palladio ^-^

  • @NYCest2010 palladio by karl jenkins

  • @NYCest2010 The song called, "Solitaire", is actually named "Palladio" -it was orginally composed by Karl Jenkins. The first and original black and white silhouette diamond commercial "A Diamond Is Forever; Diamond Solitaire", with the unmistakable classicalesque music aired in 1999. After this, every cheap department store that carries jewelry started to rip this commercial off and make their own sorry versions of it... Just look at how similar the Zales commercials are.

  • @seattlekid9 1999? No... seeing as how this commercial was recorded in 1993, that's clearly false.

  • I am a man and I am all for Femminism. Women are better than men and can do things better... I am willing to degrade myself in cleaning the house, take care of the children and cook for my future wife if she's the one bringing money to the house by working 64 hours per week... what a nice life ^^.

  • @Phireo "Women are better than men and can do things better"

Please don't pollute the gene pool any more than it is already. Thanks.

  • @SGTBizarro

Your stupidity in not understanding sarcasm and the joke in itself is discouraging.

  • listen to the song Diamond Mind by Rasputina, they put words to this, and it's really funny.

  • A diamond is what a guy buys when his wife finds out hes cheating on her. They should call it the appeasement stone.

  • I love the message behind this ("and so does my love for you"). I hope to be married and find happiness someday.

  • So elegant...one day I will buy one for the wife. For now, she can wear pearl...ahh ha.

  • She'll pretty much have too.

  • The diamond will take "forever" to pay for. When she said she wanted a gift that will last forever she didnt mean herpes.

  • @mercmarc Or HIV.

  • what is the name of this song?

  • @DOKt00n Palladio - my kids string orchestra did it about 4-5 years ago (only the advanced students), but it was quite the hit.

  • At some point in the far future, diamonds will become a scarce commodity. Then, humans will regret shaping them into minuscule husks of their natural selves to adorn the necks and fingers of the materialistic fools that we humans are.

  • @danaurum Lets go out in the woods and become uncivilized! TOGETHER! HUMANS BLOW!

  • I remember hearing this song on TV all the time as a kid in the 90s. I love it so much.

As for diamonds, not so much.

  • GSL sent me here

  • this song is awesome! i played it when i was a freshman in highschool :]

  • It's sad. And they had to put a really nice piece to it. We played this for our last orchestra concert. We put all the videos together into one long one for the piece, and at the end it said, "How else could two month's salary last forever?" We were going to put, "But orchestra lasts longer," but it wouldn't work. :(

  • If you like the palladio song in this, there's a great version played on electric harp, in concert on youtube.

  • Love has an actual monetary price...this is sad...

  • ...well music is really really beautiful...who is? Vivaldi? Mozart?

  • @mari190382 It is Palladio by Karl Jenkins.

  • @mari190382 Palladio by Karl Jenkins

  • what's this song called?

  • @blahismyname its the theme from palladio from karl jenkins.

  • thank you for posting this. I liked it when it came out and still do.

  • um i like the family guy version better

  • What about the fact that these are "conflict diamonds" to boot... What little kids in Africa had to go down into the earth (a mine) to dig up these diamonds. What a world, what a world???

  • What name of that song that song stick my head even years after that commerical air

  • Yeah the children grew and so did our love just like DeBeers hoards of diamonds. Stored in order to keep their price artificially high and growing too.

Diamonds are actually as common as horse shit. They are only made from carbon which is one of the most common elements on earth.

  • they stole this theme from guantlet!

  • wow i used to love these commercials...until i saw "blood diamond"..

  • Ah-ha found it....this is what makes youtube so fun to use.

Recalling old slices of synaptic memory still embedded and driving us nuts until we can find it.

  • I know! I was up til the crack of dawn one night looking up old school ads. I recently found those old Gap ads that copied West Side Story? Remember those? LOL!

  • @majik2hanz haha hell yea bro

    youtube is the shit

i just researched this cuz i saw the family guy version lol

  • Is the "Verizon" ad online?

  • Verizon copied this!

  • oh wow, classic

  • I loved these commercials and this beautiful music back in the day. Classic advertising.

  • What the hell man?! I swear in the south Skatells had the same freaking premise, the same shadow people and using Palladio!

  • At least wal mart has low prices and disney makes some classic movies but debeers has nothing good to be said about itself. Except this commercial

  • FINALLY!!!! took years to find this song! thank you!

  • As far as marketing goes, this is probably one of the most brilliant slogans ever.

  • :) I remember watching these back in the day... The song always caught my attention.

  • Does anyone know the name of this song? I have been wracking my brain and its frustrating me.

  • "Palladio", by Karl Jenkins

  • Thank you, I've been searching for this tune for the longest.

  • Sounds more like "Cantus"

  • It's Palladio by Karl Jenkins.

  • Palladio by Karl Jenkins

  • @DrAchO2 Palladio, by Karl Jenkins

  • It's so sad that modern American women have fallen for this marketing scam that your love can only be measured by the amount of money a man spends on you... yet at the same time they demand equality (I don't see any women spending $3k on anything for a man)

  • You must be finding the wrong women.

  • Go look at Judge Judy.

  • @mar504 exactly. society of greedy, retarded robots. it's not like they dying from hunger or anything. who needs these shiny rocks? what are we some wild african tribe that we have to have shiny things.

  • @mar504 I'm hardly a feminist, quite the opposite, but I just don't how this commercial has anything to do with it.

  • @NYerintransit "It" being what? Love? Money? Marketing? Equality? The history of the diamond ring is very interesting, DeBeers that really started the diamond (a common gemstone) ring craze in the 30's by having movie stars wear them. They take advantage of peoples emotions, making women believe that love also has a monetary value, and that a ring should cost thousands and thousands of dollars.

  • @mar504 It's not just the United States. Society, worldwide craves materialistic items and luxury. It's woven in our culture, and has been for centuries. This commercial just exemplifies that.

  • @mar504: He spends money to feed me chocolately baked goods, I spend money on oodles of books for him. I'd be enthralled if the man here presented her a Hershey's Kiss, I might even tear up

  • @EverythingAustin Those are the presents I love too!

  • @BartolinoCat: As much as I love shiny things, I think me and my hubby like to eat too much.

  • @mar504 "I don't understand about

Diamonds and why men buy them

What's so impressive about a diamond

    Except the mining"

    Fiona Apple

  • @mar504 i vote you! for president

  • @mar504 I'm pretty sure women in other countries want diamonds, too.

  • @KelleeSan Well of course, diamonds are the McDonalds of jewelry, it's everywhere. But that didn't really happen until DeBeers got into the American entertainment industry to start their marketing machine.

  • @mar504 At the very least, women need pull their heads out of their asses and start valuing gifts that are actually USEFUL rather than useless crap like jewelry.

  • @Supermassively EXCUSE ME, but i do NOT value jewelry, thank you very much! what means most to me is something that is handmade - like a picture that my son drew for me for mother's day. there is no amount of money in this world that could replace the value of that. no, the picture he drew is not USEFUL per se, but it is quite a treasure to me. so please don't assume ALL females are so shallow!

  • @firebrand420 Okay, but still, that isn't really a practical gift. You don't find women who would pass up a diamond for a laptop or a grill or a kitchen set or a gun, or more fun things like an HDTV or Blu-Rays or a Nintendo Wii. I seriously read a comment from a woman who said "If my boyfriend got me a useful gift instead of a diamond, I would cry". If a guy pisses off a girl, he's expected to waste $30 on a dozen roses. If I were that girl, I'd rather he apologize with a Blu-Ray.

  • @firebrand420 Okay, but that's still not practical. You don't find women who would pass up a diamond for a laptop or a grill or a gun or a kitchen set, or more fun things like an HDTV or Blu-Rays or a Nintendo Wii. We males love gifts like that. When a guy pisses off a girl, he's expected to waste $30 on a dozen roses that'll rot in a week. If I were that girl, assuming I were a real bitch who wants a gift apology instead of some understanding, I'd want an apology in the form of a Blu-Ray.

  • actually, i WOULD pass up a diamond for any of those items you mentioned. i don’t care for diamonds. i think they are overrated and overpriced. for me, appropriate apologies come in the form of a back rub or cooking my favorite meal. hell, go pick me a clover! a dozen roses is worthless becausethat's $30 wasted that could've been spent on groceries or a tank of gas. any woman who expects money to be spent on her to be appeased is a shallow bitch who is not worth it.

  • W00T For Karl Jenkins' Palladio!

  • im playing this in my orchestra!!

  • me too!

  • It's meant to make men feel guilty. If they don't buy their wives diamond jewelry, then they must not really appreciate what they do. I thought the kiss at the end looked sloppy.

  • my love means so much that i will value it at 3500 american

  • Thank you, I've been looking for this forever!!

  • the apple ipod ads done by TBWA won many awards, but they "borrowed" the whole idea from this de beers ad. silhouettes rather than actual people being used and only showing the product in full color.

  • pls name of this song if you know

  • karl jenkins - paladio

  • Comment removed

  • Queste sono pubblicità fatte come si deve...

  • de beers sucks voted one

  • de beers actually is the evil incarnate due to his policy and for the expolit of minors, but this spot is absolutely outstanding.

  • Agreed, it's a wonderful ad from one of the most brilliantly evil corporations on earth.

  • well said... its moving, effective, everything... and that's coming from me, a huge anti materialist.

  • wish i could vote -5

  • I love this commercial. It is so simple, yet elegant and meaningful. the song Palladio is a perfect choice and really drives the message home. So romantic

  • Please tell me what is the name of this song (just reply a post here) thanks,

  • Palladio

  • Thanks Man, I've been looking for it for years now !

  • Thank you so much for posting the name!! I was looking for the name all over!

  • The song is called Palladio

  • watch?v=JsfwEj6yqSA&NR=1

  • they look like an Asian family

  • ive made my own version of this and im playing it on guitar in britains got talent this year lol

  • @ JMDDE: Good luck :)

  • i played it yesterday and it went down a storm, just waiting on that all important phone call now :)

  • cool :P Congrats XD

  • I know this is by Karl Jenkins, but what is this song called? Anybody? I would really love to know so I could add it to a playlist... :]

  • Palladio. Specifically the Allegro Movement.

  • thank you

  • Thank you! I have been searching for this song for a while now.

  • Great Spot! It's beautiful!!!

  • i cant believe that De Beers has managed to make so many people believe that a diamond can somehow be symbolic of eternal love when diamonds cause so much hurt and suffering to countless people in the world.

  • I can. Commercialism is a surefire way to control the ignorant peon masses.

  • you watch too many movies mate. If it wasn't for de beers and diamonds there would be a lot more poverty in Africa - take Botswana for example - the most stable country in Africa with the highest wealth per capita - all because of De Beers and diamonds.

  • are you fucking kiding me de beers dosent care where they get there diamonds almost 50% of the diamonds in the are conflict diamands

  • Mr. DeBeers, is that you?

  • Palladio is also known as Zarabanda, we as well this year are using the arrangements for our marching feiled show, The mucis is awesome, I myself am part of the pit and play the climax or Zarabanda/ Palladio, if you want to listen to all four arrangements just Google Karl Jenkins- Arranged By Tom Wallace

  • it took me forever to find the song to this but when i found it it incredible to listen to.

    bonne video.

  • Diamonds ... that'll shut her up!

  • Karl Jenkins man.

He's one of my favorite composers.

    Adiemus is so beautiful

Him and Arvo Part- I could listen to them all day :)

  • Is anyone who has the video with the first spot, where there are only shadows in the sandy beach?

  • One of my favorite pieces of music in a commercial. Took a long time to track down what it was, but now that I found it, it's been redone. Thanks for posting the commercial!

  • I've always wanted to own a De Beers diamond.

So far, I only own a Hatton Garden one.

  • Watch this commercial a couple of times to get the tune in your head, and then check out the song "Diamond Mind" by Rasputina. Fun parody!

  • Regardless of whether or not you like the ad, it ultimately popularized this great musical piece...

  • The song Palladio, by Karl Jenkins (as the person below me has said) is part of a larger composition called Adiemus. We played Palladio in orchestra last year (and got a really great score at a competition), and we played 4 songs from Adiemus (In Caelum Fero, Zarabanda, Palladio, and Adiemus) as our marching band show last year. It's really awesome! It's pretty much one of my favorite pieces of music. The pit gets to play Palladio--yay pit! (i'm on vibes)

  • its called "Palladio" composed by Karl Jenkins

  • My ballet teacher's choreographing a dance to this for us. :]

  • Any one know what the name of the song that plays in the background?

  • I will give only cultured diamonds from now on!!!

  • Great ad, and did exactly what it was supposed to do. Perpetuate the marketing myth of a new diamond as the "traditional" symbol of marriage (as encouraged by De Beers in the 1940s), and ensure that millions of American women would refuse to get married without a rock. (As an ad manager, this stuff is my bread and butter...so yes, it's true.)

  • Well, it's working out well for them! I read on the JuliB site that they recently opened a new 6 story store in San Francisco. That's a lot of diamonds being sold.

  • Indeed, it's worked out perfectly! Even though their diamond sales took a bit of a hit last year, that's still about $6.15 billion in rough diamonds sold. The desire for exceptional stones, particularly in the East, is increasing in spite of the issues surrounding diamond ethics. If you're interested, the "Diamond Invention" by J. Epstein is a fantastic study on De Beers although it's pretty dated.

  • but how come they keep on buying diamond if the first one was supposed to be forever? Did they eat the first one?

  • @ceb2008love Well, if they didn't keep buying diamonds, DeBeers couldn't keep making money to make more commercials to get people to buy diamonds...

  • I remember when I was little and first saw this. It was VERY effective as commercials go, considering it's still among my favorites like 14 years later. Kudos to who came up with it.

  • it was another one like this except the woman was tryin to kill the man and the man was tryin to kill the woman

  • Awesome music. Too bad it's wasted on a diamond commercial for most diamond purchasers are dumb cunts that don't give a shit about the suffering of others.

  • great spot amazing song..it's really breath taking...i can't wait to get married

  • Great Spot! It's beautiful!!!

  • Palladio and yes buy your tart a see through rock and their leg'sll open like a muslim corner shop on a christmas vacation! i find a nice cut piece of glass usually does the trick though both look the same

  • whats the song called? anyone know?

  • Allegretto, but I have only found the group Bond to have the same version.

  • i'm in grade school and i'm learning this song...psh

  • Watching this commercial is like the very first thing I ever remeber doing.

  • "A diamond is forever, eh? Well why the hell do you want another, did you eat the first or something?!"

  • You do realise, idiot WaspFather, that DeBeers have a signficant control of the gold trade as well. Do a search for Anglo-American and get back to us then.

  • Hahahahahahahaha.

  • OMG whats wrong with jews?? ur just being racist, and im spamming ur comment BTW

  • I always remembered the music from these commercials and nothing else

  • if i was give a diamond neckless like that one in the commercial to my girl would i have a better chance of getting laid...??

  • It's more than that. It's that, if you don't buy your wife one of these, you just don't appreciate the fact that she's ruined her figure by squeezing out some kids, or any of the other normal rites of long-term relationships.

  • the song name is: "Palladio"

and you can find it in Morpheus or any another file sharing system.

  • Thanks for making this video available. Now if only I could find the one for the 2006 Christmas Holiday season..."How Can I tell You That I Love You..."

  • Holy Crap!!! You are the man!!! Thanks for the upload. I was looking for one of these videos forever. I just got the song from this video a couple of months ago and wanted to see the video again.

  • Hey who music is this i have been trying to find it

  • The song is called "Paladdio" and it's by Karl Jenkins. I had been searching for it a long time too!

  • The sound is remarkable for the commercial.

  • Love this commercial

  • Me too! I love everything about it. The music, the silhouettes, the words. It was just classic. I wish DeBeers still made commercials like this.

  • Way to go dude, now she'll pretty much have to. lol
