  • Simply adore this guy, he has written some of the greatest songs I've ever had the priviledge to listen to.

  • Watched the BBC documentary about him again last night, got a lump in my throat when Billy Conolly broke down at the end, and resolved to go and get a 'best of' today. Classic stuff.

  • Awesome! No other words can explain about this track. Benja :-)

  • Gerry nite on BBC4 tonight. lush!

  • @simes6600 watched the BBC4 show tonight, one word AWESOME

  • @milehi38 missed it :( but it's on again at 2am Sat...thanks :)

  • @dunv8 I hope you have a recorder I loved the program and the artists. I am still watching BBC4 now Singer Songwriters, wonderful music I hope you catch this one too.

  • @luciferscock now and again I see a user name that makes me laugh, your is a good one sir. Made me think of Bill Hicks doing his "Suck Satans Cock" bit.

  • No way was Gerry playing Guitar properly on this Video. Seems to me that he had already given up on the Music establishment. Love your music Gerry, I think you needed a lot of help which just was just not there, because of reduced resources and cutbacks.. RIP GERRY love to your Family, God bless you and them.

  • Always thought Gerry Rafferty was very talented and was really upset when he died. We were in Corfu in 1985 or 1986 and our tour operator rep said that he was Gerry Rafferty. He said he just wanted to be out of the rat race. He did look like Gerry and was a perfect gent but no-one ever believed us when we got home. Can anyone let me know if this guy was a fake?

  • Heard this on Sunday night for first time in YEARS while out with bf and been obsessed with finding it,had no artist or title, literally only lyrics I had were the "oh no no no's"!! Had a feeling it was Andrew Gold or Gerry Rafferty but woke half an hour ago with it in my head and ended up typing a lot of "oh no no no no's" into Google,I got there!!! Back to sleep now I've solved my little mystery....or maybe another listen or two to relax me :-)

  • A very ex girlfriend thought this depressing........nuff said.

  • @30crocus Mine too :-) :-)

  • the pipe smoking is illegal and very dangerous,im typing this by way off pop ups like push ups without the use of arms.Mo foster?is she no Gary 0ldmans dancing on ice eastenders sister.or maybe im thinking...Only kidding Mo's the man....and im a big fan..

  • 186 v 1... taste free twat

  • I don't think Gerry Rafferty could ever have made a bad record no matter how hard he may have tried. He may no longer be with us, but through his music, his memory will never die. God Bless+you Gerry.

  • That drummer belongs on "Swamp Loggers", great track.

  • I'm a big rock fan.. love everything from U2 to AC/DC, to FOO FIGHTERS.....But everytime I hear this song, I fall in love with it more and more. It is quite simply, a brilliantly written, and performed pop track. I love it!

  • Is That Mo Foster on Bass?

  • @amandajh Yes it is! Learned a lot from him watching him play. unfortunately he doesn't smoke his Pipe on this Video!. Mo's contibution to Gerry's Songs are enormous! Love the Guy as a Collegue Bassplayer!

  • favourite gerry song, simply brilliant...

  • One of my favourites, without a doubt one of the best song writers and musicians of all time

  • @foggy741 Spot-on mate. Totally with you on that one. :)

  • The last time I heard this song was in 1979. Since then, I have tried in vain to get this song again, but I didn't know the title. But today, I finally climbed Everest. Thank you, YOUTUBE. One more thing. If the musicians wish to pretend to drum / play the guitar in video clips, by all means. But please make an effort to make it look genuine. The drummer was so out of tune with the music, it's not funny. Merry Christmas everyone.

  • Just had a "chillout room" built at the back of the house. This is definately going to be allowed in there. :)

  • The full version of this song's 6 minutes and some odd seconds long. Go check it out too!

  • Ah yes Richard Burton. By God now that man could drink!

  • Dont be daft have spoken to some of the members of the band and Richard himself

  • Only just heard this song today on the Radio and I already know it's going to be one of my all time favourites. Love it. I'm 22 and I can't stand most of today's music. I was born in the wrong decade :)

  • @StevieWilks1989 No...you just have a good taste in music my friend. Be proud of yourself.

  • I'd never really listened to the lyrics until now but it sounds very much like he's singing about his depression and battle with alcoholism. Huge talent. Huge loss.

  • He married Elizabeth Taylor.

  • Need the bass tabs please

  • @SuperTugman Go on a site called chordie.com and find tabs, chords, lyrics etc, beautiful site. All the bands of all kinds of music including Gerry Rafferty, good luck ♫♫♪♪♫ 8)

  • What a great song

  • Do any one know what happened to Richard Brunton guitarist in this video

  • @lindatom1313 The guitarist in this video is not Richard Brunton it is "Sonny"who now lives close to Nashville,

  • Who disliked this???

  • @TheJACKROTTEN Fans of Current chart "music"... thats who.

  • awesome song and i agree very underated

  • My old Da introduced me to Gerry Rafferty in the 70's n 80's - what a talent.

Im glad I got to see him at the Royal Concert Hall - I even met him in Paisley near Gilmour St Station one day when I was out for a stroll at lunch time.

Phone cameras weren't about then - Unlucky for me - But my fav has got to be - Night Owl !

  • Much loved, under appreciated, and sorely missed...RIP Gerry...

  • Looks like the guy from That 70's Show all grown up...

  • A great song and a great artist. We will hear more of this music, I promise you that. A great artist does not die, Their recordings go on forever.

  • Gerry Rafferty is so sadly missed but I thank him from my heart for his beautiful music. Never ever get tired of his songs.

    RIP Gerry

  • and looking not too carefully i can see alot of handy musicians playing with one of the greatest singers of the late 70s. so much better than the manufactured CRAP today

  • gerry r.i.p lived 2 roads up from me in upton poole dorset

  • Gerry also had a great ability to harness the efforts of those paying with him, part of his understated genius.

  • Gerry's time has passed from this world, but the lyrics and melodies of his ballads will last forever. Arguably Scotland's greatest troubadour.

  • I love everything about this song..i have a few gerry rafferty albums and i am only 38yrs old,but this is by far my favourite track..his music is fantastic and i love this video where they are all doing there own bit in the studio..never see that in this day and age with all the technology about..THIS IS PROPER MUSIC PLAYED BY PROPER ARTISTS USING PROPER INSTRUMENTS.

  • Copyright 2011 ? I knew old style glasses were fashion again, but...

  • @luciferscock: Gerry would never have sweard, so why would you.. keep his spirit alive, by being nice an honest to each other..respect Gerry !!

  • This is the perfect solution to insomnia! I suffered from insomnia for years, until I got this album, and everytime, this song would put me down for the count!!! And I would have wonderful dreams!

  • fantastic

  • this song is beautiful

  • probably the most chilled out, beautiful song of the 1970's and in my top ten of gretest songs of all time. rest in peace mate god bless

  • @Nickyd2345

    I agree, totally

  • Gerry Rafferty's singing voice had an incredibly emotive and melancholy quality to it.

Such a sad way for such a great and underrated talent to end up. Easily one of the best singing voices ever. Modern singers would do well to learn from him, but they probably wouldn't even know who he was!

  • thanks for this, i have been trying to find this information for ages.

is hught burns the guitar player sitting, the one with the moustache?

a long standing bet with friends depaends on this. thanks again

  • Here's the list of musicians that played :

    Gerry Rafferty - vocals, keyboards

    Richard Thompson - guitar

Mo Foster - bass - the big guy that looked like Gerry

    Richard Harvey - organ

    Hugh Burns - guitar

    Liam Genockey - drums

    Raphael Ravenscroft - saxophone, lyricon

    Frank Ricotti - percussion

  • @mrmjoker But it was Pete Wingfield, not Richard Harvey, who played organ on this song?

  • Gerry Rafferty performing Night Owl. (P) 2011 The copyright ?? 2011? vevo? now this poor soul is at his rest these vevo vultures decide to get in on the act? fuck vevo, Gerry gave us this music, yes us, his fans, not some advertising revenue engine greed machine,i hope you have finally conquered your demons, rest in peace!

  • @luciferscock I for one am glad I can view this incredible music thanks to VEVO. RIP Gerry.

  • @luciferscock It's 1979 vevo

  • @SparkTV think ot was 1981? or so i'm told.

  • @luciferscock well commented sir. he lived but 30 seconds from me. such an early departure

  • @luciferscock

    hell yeh well said

  • wonderful. can anyone identify the other musicians in this studio session?

especially the guitarist sitting down and the keyboard player who looks a bit like lol creme from 10cc

  • wonderful. can anyone identify the other musicians in this stuido session?

  • For me, this song is the best lullabay....it puts me down for the count every time! Back in the late 90's I was having Insomnia issues, seeing doctors, being put on meds...all that jazz. Then one visit, one of the clinic workers gave me some great advice. What artist/musician did I love, whose music relaxed me...listen to it when I go to bed, Within three days, I was sleeping like a baby. Interesting note....eating a few Crispy Cream Doughnuts before you go to bed, I had awesome dreams!

  • rip Gerry

  • You can listen to this over and over again, and still want to listen to it even more.

  • @martinh103 I do it all the time,

  • Im glad I got to see Gerry Rafferty play - March 1993 - Royal Concert Hall Glasgow - I was brought up listening to Night Owl and Baker Street with my old da - after he had a few ! - and at 43 Im still listen to Gerry doing his magic

  • has anyone got the bass tab for "Night owl"?

  • One of my favs from Gerry Rafferty - starts off with classic a classic baseline

Rafferty comes in with the locals and the rest join in !! Liam Genockey is on the drums - Mo Foster is in there as well.

For me - apart from Rafferty - the best bit is Raphael Ravenscroft playing the melody on the electronic lyricom - top drawer percussionist - he also did the sax into on Baker Street.

  • Oh Yes , Thats my mug of Red wine allright.

    Beautifull

    Peace x

    Foxy

  • One of my Top Five Bass Lines

    Peace x

    Foxy

  • No sign of Cowell no wonder the music is so damn good.
