If you like this you might like Journey to the West it's by the gorillaz creators and is their telling of the classic chinese folk tale from which the original monkey tv show was based.
The monkey and the pig are a traditional Chinese story (they made a TV show of it in the '70s, called "Monkey" in English). The monkey riding on the cloud is all part of the traditional mythological stories.
And if you notice, they've subtly weaved hints at various Olympic sports into their adventures - the pig is doing the hurdles, then he tries to pole vault the gap, monkey throws his stick like a javelin, etc.

i loved this when i saw it first time round, but have studied Bejing Opera and watched the Jingju versions of this story, i love it all the more
