Corelli is my favorite Don Jose. I have the old Karajan recording with Price and his voice in this video does appear to be dubbed in from that recording. That is my favorite recording of Carmen. I've never heard another tenor sing the Flower Song with more feeling and passion than Corelli. Bravo!!
I have a Confucian, Grandmaster F: Corelli in 1981 gave a concert in EE: UU: and someone recorded it from the public, esta'en these pages, the beautiful voice is heard and power, although the audio is volune low and is slim and handsome, as always. Performed this operation with the same soprano, I think in the Arena of Verona, maybe in 1975, there are live recordings and photos of it. Why do a playback on a widescreen video''Éste is so wide you go away .
The singing is NOT from 1982 - he was retired. It could be a lip sync filmed in 82 from an earlier performance - he lip snycs some stuff from the 60s on The Voice of Firestone or maybe it was filmed and sung before 1982.
@65attila Nobody stated that the singing would be from 1982. The sound is the Karajan studio recording with Price as Carmen, the film is from 1982, made for an Italian tv program.
@RainhadoCanto4 That is indeed not Price on the film, nobody said otherwise. This is playback, the film was made in 1982 after Corelli's retirement for an Italian tv show using the Carmen recording made in the 60-s with Karajan and Price.
Corelli was certainly the SEXIEST tenor. He had a beautiful tenor voice, could get into character but he had a lot of sex appeal. After him, Placido Domingo did the same thing - sang just as great and looked handsome/sexy, but only when Domingo was on a diet and in good shape, which was in the 1980's. Corelli's Don Jose is more lyrical than realistic and his French sounds too Italianate. He sang Italian opera far better than French.

he sounded like he was opening the F# on the La Boheme aria and in Werther, Romeo--it sounded as though he mixed those notes in the heavier repetoire like this carmen. that constant demanding throat position was possibly a factor--throat ache---anyone ever hold it open like that and sing for any length of time?
he initiates the first F--LA--- in that style as well with the larynx opposing the air--very nice and unique-effective--comments?
I agree. How could anyone think of it? His voice is beautiful, very moving in this aria. How he is pouring his heart and soul into the music! A privilege to hear Corelli at any time.
i know why franco decided to retire and i don't think i would agree it had all that much to do with his voice being spent or not fresh.... all singers have good and bad days especially as they get older, but listen to him sing the otello duel from the gala right before he retired. and you think that voice sounds spent????? wow. at the met atfer he left rumors were always going around that ''francos coming back....!!'' the only thing shot about franco were his nerves which were always bad.
I agree, he sounded very good in 1972, but if you listen to his broadcast of LA BOHEME or of ROMEO ET JULIETTE from 1974, he does, indeed, sound spent. He rose to the occasion in the two TURANDOTs he broadcast that year, but those were exceptions at the time. Listen, too, to the BOHEME from Torre del Lago in 1976: Corelli's voice WAS "spent" and his nerves were getting the better of him. I like Corelli and his singing, but it was good that he retired when he did.
Franco has always been my favorite of all the great opera singers. Like I've commented before the American singer Donald Braswell looks enough like Corelli and sounds enough like him to be his twin (when Franco was younger). Donald Braswell studied under Franco.

The sound recording is from the studio recording with Karajan (Leontyne Price as Carmen) made in the mid 60's. Strange thing to "make a video" out of it about 20 years later.
It was made for an Italian TV program called "I Grandi della Lirica". There were similar shows made with other great singers like Bergonzi, Becchi and others. There is an interview before each aria, the singer talks about the role that follows the interview.
Wow....Italian singers who are good at French are rare. There are many Italian singers who I'll listen to all day...as long as they're not singing in French. I was pleasantly surprised when I heard this recording though- his French is really good!
Vickers could diminuendo very well also and of course Bergonzi and Bjorling but Vickers did not have a real Italian sound even though he was a great artist and had a fine technique.
I have to agree with 2MANYHIGHCS i do believe he cast a shadow over them all, the man was fantastic, and incidentally he was also Callas's favourite tenor.
One of the Callas biographies mentioned that they got on very well, Callas liked singing with him. When she returned to the Met to sing Tosca, she insisted on singing with Corelli exclusively. Several letters written by her to Bing prove this. Corelli had other engagement so he could sing only one performance with Callas, the other one was sung by Tucker.

Very nice recording. I think he was one of the greatest, but he simply cannot match Domingo's passion on this aria. I feel drained after watching Placido sing, but Corelli leaves me unaffected. Apologies to Corelli fans....
Estoy de acuerdo contigo. Domingo es más fino, más apasionado. Corelli a veces llega a verse grotesco.
Yes, I know who he is... I am paying him a complement.. i only meant that he doesn't get as much recognition today as he should in the shadow of pavarotti, domingo, and carreras... i feel the same way about mario lanza

Carmen is gorgeous, and her acting is superb. Corelli is a wonderful actor with
a wonderful voice. It's an odd voice for
a tenor. There is so much baritone in it.
His "E lucevan le stelle" is exceptional.
Possibly the best acting in that scene also.
