Hard to say right now. I don't like the idea of messing with EoE by making it a sequel, but I can see Anno doing it. I think geeks don't like it when you remake their favourite things because it suggests to them that something they obsess over is 'replacable'...see the Star Trek remake going out of its way to show it's a parallel universe, not a remake. So Anno might do something like that.
Once this 4 part movie series is completed, I have no doubt that it will exceed the awesomeness of Starwars, Lord of the Rings, and Harry Potter. Why? Because it's my opinion!

Character development was just slapped together leaving everyone seeming really shallow, And it just did not have the gritty feeling that NGE had to it. Worth seeing if you're a fan, but I wouldn't get my hopes too high.

For me, the first episode of the series, when a 13 year old boy, left alone in an entirely evacuated city, was picked up to pilot Eva Unit 01 in order to very painfully defend his own life, and to earn the approval of his father - that was pretty "gritty" to me. I'm very confused. I stopped watching Evangelion at "End of Evangelion". I'm confused about all these new versions, (2.0, 2.22, 3.0, 4.0). Are they alternate endings or continuation of End of Evangelion? I've always been anxious for a more but I don't know what to get. Help!
3.0 Continues on from 2.0 but 4.0 will be a different ending from 3.0. 3 and 4 should be released at the same time, which probably explains the extended wait...
The English version of 3.0 will be out in April US and May UK. DVD/BLURAY.

@Ahamster1 The Angels were born from Adam. Adam is a Seed of Life, created to give life to planets. Adam was meant to give life to Earth, but by accident a second Seed of Life, called Lilith, arrived on Earth too. Each SoL was given a 'Spear' that acted as a fail-safe in case something like this happened, but Lilith's Spear was destroyed when she landed on Earth, so Adam was deactivated instead, despite being the one assigned to give Earth life.
@Ahamster1 (cont.) Lilith then gave birth to humanity and all other LCL-based lifeforms. Adam was eventually discovered and experimented on, leading to her awakening. The result was the Second Impact, in which Adam apparently attempted to reclaim the planet, but was reduced to an embryonic state instead as well as losing her soul. The Angels are Adam's children and they seek to recover Adam and/or make contact with Lilith in an attempt to cause Third Impact to end humanity and reclaim the Earth.

I wish they would give Akira this kind of rebirth treatment. If they did the entire story of Akira--obviously have to be a series of films--it would be absolutely EPIC! The part where Tetsuo rips out a chunk of the moon would be amazing, to say nothing of the final showdown between him and Akira.
its not totally new, its an improved remake with a more understandable story line, and there will be a third one to finish it off. but there are new characters and the storyline changes a bit, but all is done in the name of coherence and entertainment

So, let me get this straight...these movie series aren't re-masterings of the original show, and it actually changes the story around? I'm a little skeptical on this now....
Movie 1 is ep 1-6. PERIOD. Almost exactly the same aside from a few short scenes and of course lots of cell shaded CG (all of which nicely done other than turning the Pyramid angel into the MCP from the original TRON movie). It ends with "you could try smiling"
Movie 2 is a total complete reboot. Similar angels, similar events, but WAY different. And IMHO, VERY well done! It actually mixes up and combines events in a very clever way. I'd pay to see it in the theater again.
I just saw 2.0 in a local theater. It was subbed. Does anybody know if the dub version is even out yet? I was under the impression that is was, but apparently not. Can anybody confirm this?

@bulliony Yeah but you would be surprised how many idiots are on the internet :D What my initial point was anyways, many people judge evangelion just by looking at it. Thats why many people like the evas are robots when in fact they are cyborgs (both artificial and natural). More importantly, eva unit 1 is shinji's mother, thus shinji almost being reborn every time he exits the eva (like birth). Many people just think its a robot show, that was my point. Yes they may be idiots, but they exist.
Shinji is still the same old frustrating "limp hero" just as he was in the original. But there's something about the way Anno presented him in Rebuild that makes him more understood...and eventually, dare I say, badass.
Well he not that wimp or weak anymore unlike NGE Shinji is a lot more mature in Rebuild and still kind as well. His feelings for both Asuka and Rei seem far more genuine then in the series when it kind of came off as just a sexual attraction (though i'm not saying that's all there was to it), between Shinji almost dieing trying to save Rei and doing the same trying to save Asuka and willing to face execution to avenge her. if you disagree you are entitled with own opinion. ^_-
@Zero4ph Solid points. But, again, I said "at the beginning." Shinji starts weak and toughens up into a stronger character much better than in NGE to the point of becoming a badass; that's what I'm trying to say.
@Zero4ph That is only your opinion. Who doesn't like a well-adjusted Shinji (ignoring the BSOD he does to save Ms. Doormat).
The problem is that if Shinji is a normal boy, what is the point of the show/movie? For the TV series, it was about him growing up and facing his fears and participating in a world that may hate him.
Rebuild feels more like a cash-in using the NGE franchise. (though lets be fair, everything Anno did after the TV series was cash-ins.

So, let me get this straight...these movie series aren't re-masterings of the original show, and it actually changes the story around? I'm a little skeptical on this now....

Movie 1 is ep 1-6. PERIOD. Almost exactly the same aside from a few short scenes and of course lots of cell shaded CG (all of which nicely done other than turning the Pyramid angel into the MCP from the original TRON movie). It ends with "you could try smiling"
Movie 2 is a total complete reboot. Similar angels, similar events, but WAY different. And IMHO, VERY well done! It actually mixes up and combines events in a very clever way. I'd pay to see it in the theater again.

I just saw 2.0 in a local theater. It was subbed. Does anybody know if the dub version is even out yet? I was under the impression that is was, but apparently not. Can anybody confirm this?

(DVD - Mar 29, 2011)" Now unless Spike Spencer flew to Japan just to add the wee bits of English seiyū during the first 20 minutes, I'm pretty sure that means the DVD and Blu Ray of 2.22 will include the US Funimation English dub.
... oh and for the record 2.0 means the actual film shown in theaters, 2.2x means the home version, and any variance therein is negligible.

@bulliony Yeah but you would be surprised how many idiots are on the internet :D What my initial point was anyways, many people judge evangelion just by looking at it. Thats why many people like the evas are robots when in fact they are cyborgs (both artificial and natural). More importantly, eva unit 1 is shinji's mother, thus shinji almost being reborn every time he exits the eva (like birth). Many people just think its a robot show, that was my point. Yes they may be idiots, but they exist.

Shinji is still the same old frustrating "limp hero" just as he was in the original. But there's something about the way Anno presented him in Rebuild that makes him more understood...and eventually, dare I say, badass.

Well he not that wimp or weak anymore unlike NGE Shinji is a lot more mature in Rebuild and still kind as well. His feelings for both Asuka and Rei seem far more genuine then in the series when it kind of came off as just a sexual attraction (though i'm not saying that's all there was to it), between Shinji almost dieing trying to save Rei and doing the same trying to save Asuka and willing to face execution to avenge her. if you disagree you are entitled with own opinion. ^_-

@Zero4ph Solid points. But, again, I said "at the beginning." Shinji starts weak and toughens up into a stronger character much better than in NGE to the point of becoming a badass; that's what I'm trying to say.

@Zero4ph That is only your opinion. Who doesn't like a well-adjusted Shinji (ignoring the BSOD he does to save Ms. Doormat).
The problem is that if Shinji is a normal boy, what is the point of the show/movie? For the TV series, it was about him growing up and facing his fears and participating in a world that may hate him.
Rebuild feels more like a cash-in using the NGE franchise. (though lets be fair, everything Anno did after the TV series was cash-ins.
