it is very good that you let your daughter be her self let her.
I'm deaf also. I grow up in a familly all hearing and they never wanted or tryed to learn sign. instead they forced me to get a cochler implaint and foced years of speech thearpy. Now the cochlear implaint is not bad itself it just when the parents force it onto you and not even ask. I wear the cochlear when i'm with hearing world but other than that i almost never wear it. and I still sign with or with out it on.
i think it would be a really good thing, if you get her to wear hearing aids 'cause when she gets older she'll be able to talk to friends and family that doesn't know sign language.. but sign language is also a great thing, but takes a while to get to know sign language.(:
@rachmonstaaa That comment is just ignorant. Please make sure you research the subject before you say things like that. No one has forced you to learn Spanish or French to communicate with others.
@tsalickis uhm. okay, im deaf so i would watch it. i have two implants, and i know a little of sign language... its pretty cool, but i think it would be good for her to talk.. im not trying to be mean or anything.. i have alot of friends that signs, and one of my friends told me it's hard to talk to her mom who doesn't know sign language...
@rachmonstaaa knowing a few words helps. my cousin can say some things, mainly peoples' names but for times when people are looking away and such, it's realy useful to get someone's attention. his whole imediate family and a lot of others speak sign language just for him. it's really neat.
I think tsalickis was just offended, you see ASL is their language and they are proud of their language and culture. Suggesting to someone who is deaf and knows sign, to wear hearing aids so that they can learn to speak can be a little offensive. For you, hearing is natural, but for them, being deaf is natural. Most wouldnt want to change that.
@rachmonstaaa - She already had her hearing aids, but she is growing up in the deaf world Because she born deaf due to family heredity - she signs pretty a lot since she born.. Also, I had other younger hearing daughter, she is only one hearing in this family she knew a lot of signs plus speaking because she is growing up in both deaf/hearing world I loves my girls very much, I just let them to be themselves for who they are as long as they are very much happy, They are very much happy girls.
I think hearing folks wanting to learn sign especially receptively should hang around signing Deaf children. This will increase your receptive skills tremendously simply because children signs are still developing and many times are not clear. BUT if you really focus, your receptive skills will grow! Yes she is cute. I love watching my children who are deaf sign stories. I'm amazed at the detail and structure that they come up with.
cute! i am 12 and in the process of learning to sign. i want to teach blind and deaf students when i get older. she is so pretty and you are blessed with a wonderful child!
