If you've studied piano or classical music, you know that a lot of what Eddie plays is a direct rip off of classical music. The descending arpeggiated run in Eruption is common and "no big deal" in classical music. The only difference is that most metal heads have never really listened to Mozart or any of the other greats so when they hear Ed they are amazed. Remember, Ed and Al were both classical pianists as children. Don't think their first musical training influenced them? Think again.

Most "musicians" don't put in the time or aren't bright enough to understand the language of music. You have to understand the language (modes, cadences, etc.) to be able to compose. Then you have to have the guts to put your own music out there, knowing that not everyone will like it. Most "musicians" don't have the guts to do this, so they end up playing cover songs. Ed's "genius" is that he had Al to bounce ideas off of and develop crazy techniques into actual songs.

@vanshipman If you believe the hype Mozart was damn near close to a lunatic before he died. Everyone had grown tired of his shtick and he was buried in an unmarked grave because no one gave a fuck. Now he's revered as a genius and rightfully so. It's amazing that hundreds of years later nothing has really changed about human nature. No doubt in my mind that Eddie was the greatest rock guitarist to ever walk the planet. No one will ever make the leaps forward with the instrument like he did.
