  • For fucks sake, how many decades have i got to practice to get close to Jasons playing?

  • THanks.

  • Rick Estrin says the same thang. Thanks for setting this up.

  • you have been blessed with a great gift of teaching. In one of your videos, you said "if you want to keep it, give it away." that has stuck with me and now I apply it to my trumpet students, vocal, and music in general.

    keep wailin', man.

  • @calumarthur1989 jason's using an A harmonica.

  • Ive tried this on my C harmonica and got the rhythm nailed but it just does not sound quite right im thinking of buying a harmonica tomorrow in either E or A, which one you using?x

  • This dude is a natural teacher, you couldent get the best harp players in the world to instruct you how their technics are practiced better then this dude does! great harm player for sure... but even a better teacher!!!

  • gosh your tearing it up dude. i'm gonna have to watch a few times to get this. i just got bending the other day. thanks for the tutorials. your awesome!!!

  • Wow dude dats mental.. awesome:)

  • Love you for sharing with us... Fav and subscribed also.

  • Great tutorial! Thanx! Be going back to this one alot!!

  • You have a great way of teaching and getting your points across in a way that is understandable. You have a natural talent for that. That's a real gift. I've been playing for 40 years and have learned more in a week from you than I did in 10 years. I was doing stuff that sounded good not knowing how I was doing it. Now, if I can take the next step that will be great. Keep up the good work and if you ever play in So. Ca, I'd like to hear about it. I think you have a great style. Steve

  • Very nice one

    yes yes some rocking

  • Great tutorial man.

    Two thumbs up for you!

    Thank u

  • Eres la hostia tio, te sales; creo que no voy a poder tocar la armonica en mi puta vida, pero bueno, seguire viendo tus videos porque algo aprendo cada día, una abrazo y suerte.

  • Hi Jason. Thankyou SO MUCH for these lessons/advice/tips/everything. You and Adam Gussow and many others have been mentors to people like myself who are wanting to get serious with their Harp playing. I really do hope you come out to Australia someday and tour down under. I've sent you a link to my band in pvt message. Please have a listen if you get the chance and feel free to critique me on my playing. Thankyou!

  • Like your comments on not being only focused on technique but, paying attention also to developing a musical intuition applying to beats and measures, building solos to a crescendo, and the return to a theme.

  • büyüksün baba

  • Jason, i understand what youre doing, but you dont explain "how" to do (it, as in move tongue, or whatever you have to do)

i have the idea but it should sound faster

  • Sorry Jaztone Richkey - was that you in a video with christeller ? French Girl ? Also get a bit of a kick when you run out by one second - "ok thanks for watching and......" - anyway - looking young again - must have been have been bad light.

  • All you guys rock thanks for watcing!

  • @jasonricci He's absolutely right about impeccable time - but to step it up to the next level, tap your foot on 2 and 4 only, not on all four beats of the measure. Do this with a metronome at first until you "ingrain" it it.

  • you see, to actually play the harmonica, one must "suck" AND "blow".

  • you need to relax.

  • you said it jason, timing is everything

  • Haha! man I wish I could play as well as you "mess up"

  • Luuuv you're playing and vids! Keep em comin!

  • wow bro this shits badass

  • Jabroni!

  • Wow! What a treat. Thank you for sharing this with everyone.

  • That was off the Hook brother! Made my day man... :) Thanx :)

  • great stuff jason... u crack me up. after all that vamping u say: "I messed up!"

  • wow- what an amazing feel Jason.

I hope you'll be touring in San Diego area some time soon, love to check a show out.

  • Do you know the diference between portuguese and spanish??? I don't think you do!

so here we go. Não beijar seu traseiro não. Eu vou é enterrar meu pau na sua bunda magrela! porque é oque você gosta!! seu viadinho!! você toca gaita como uma bicha!

Also you mixed spanish from mexico with argentinian! chaquetero!!

  • Eu não me importo idiota, eu tenho tudo e você não são nada.

  • Una mas cosa...Why is it every homophobic idiot that writes nasty shit always at some point eventually winds up saying there going to screw some "queer" in the ass? That is always the funniest/best part. Plecplec you should really watch this video...it's for you its here on youtube (also with spanish subtitles) and it's titled : " Study shows that repressed Homosexuality could be root of Homophobia (legendado)."

  • jason dont listen to this fools. They probably have no life and no friends. God bless you jasonricci for teaching us this great instrument so much misunderstood.

  • ha ha good on you man, ur a legend!

  • Plecplec you should really watch this video...it's for you its here on youtube (also with spanish subtitles) and it's titled : " Study shows that repressed Homosexuality could be root of Homophobia (legendado)."

  • I feel ashamed for the behaviour of some Portuguese speakers around.

Just ignore it, Jason, your videos are AWESOME! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and inspiring all of us!

  • that was AMAZING

  • GROOVE is KING! : )

  • nice jam sesh man. cant believe i missed this video, 12gagedan sent it to me, i had asked him abouy key of A mouth harp demos. again, nice jam sesh.

  • Speaking to people like they're not idiots really helped to get your points across.

I don't know the lingo, but I can grasp what you're talking about with the examples afterwards.

    Excellent teaching.

    Kudos for the skill too.

  • Thank you very much! I wanted to fill the "Your Not Stupid" void on youtube instructional vids. So glad you liked it!

    J

  • Hey Ricci great stuff u r teaching. question; are you articulating and at the same time using some kind of t. blocking

  • No most of this is done lip pursing by just sort of opening and closing my mouth to allow a chord/chords in between any single notes and also yes articulating with a "t" sound against my front teeth.. Of course you can and should try it tongue blocking too. Good question!

  • I agree, there are a lot of "mavens" LOL! I stick with public domain, anyone can do that stuff. ♫♫☺

  • Dude, you rule.

  • I really love this lesson! Thanks, Jason.

I'm thinking about buyin' your latest CD. :)

  • A great young harp player..

  • INCREDIBLE!!!

  • Aw shucks Jason, you just made me cry (around 7 mins!) Absolutely awesome :-)

  • Do Re Mi... is a Major scale, not a chromatic.

    Great video!

  • Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do....that's the chromatic scale and should be practiced on the 10 hole diatonic OVER AND OVER like a musician of another type of instrument, until the scales are really easy. A couple of bends and it's easy. Play with tongue blocking too! Listen to Rick Estrin and Magic Dick's tongue work.

  • I'm having the hardest time with this, even in the simpilist of forms. 2 draw, 2 blow, 1 draw? Are these played single notes?

  • It's hard to get. I'm still trying.

  • proly my favorite chord player next to sonny boy

  • Great explanation of the timing thing, Jason.

    Great playing, too!

  • Magic!! My wife's cussing you cos I've just gone out and bought a G, C & F Lee Oskars!!

Haha! I aint touched a "moothy" for 25 years!! Really appreciate your excellent videos! Cheers!

  • Wow man. In ten minutes I got so much better in my timing than I ever have before. I've always lacked rythym, as a guitar player, dancer, singer etc, but I've worked really hard as a harp player. This has really got me inot the groove. Thanks man.

  • wow u got some of the best cordal vamping ive ever herd u really make that harp sing

  • Thanks for the direction, man. I've been playing blues guitar for 10 years and picked up the harp as a change and absolutely am falling in love with it. These lessons are a huge help! Keep 'em coming!

  • You're kidding right? This is why Jason gets flustered in uploading YouTube vids. Read the description.

  • Thanks Riz! You rock!

  • what key is the harmonica ur playing

  • You iz one Garoovie vampin machine, Jason. I revisit this video when I need a 'Jumpstart'. Your discussion of relevance and getting back in time is a huge key for the Harmonica player that does not want to dodge flying objects, lol...

  • Another big thanks for the lessons. I hope that you got to see the "Harmonica History" series that I posted. I've now found a very rare clip of Fred Astaire playing "Whammer Jammer" Thought you'd like it.

  • thank you 4 your time and dedication.....

  • man you rock !

    sound's like a lotta practice

  • Great stuff. What harp are you using and in what key was this played? Thanks for this lesson. *****/*****

  • ....read the side note......

  • Please read the description. Thanks Harp Master!

  • You're teaching a very important part of playing here, Jason!Lucky beginners who start by watching your videos - I had to figure out this on my own by listening to music and practicing. :-) It would be an honor if you would listen to my playing - check the Rockin' Chair Band videos among my favorites if you would like to and tell me how you like it! ;-)

    Best wishes!

  • YOu go, Jason!

I like your style on the harp

    AND as a teacher.

    Thanks, man.

  • THANK YOU FOR YOUR APPRECIATION!

    J

  • "bada budo dubudo budobo!"

just kidding, great lesson and style

it's funny, in the middle, to me, it sounds like you're playing a funky guitar shuffle

  • Thanks man you rock for watching and being nice!

  • WOW Jason I'm just getting back into playing Harp after a long layoff, This is the kind of stuff I want to learn, I will watch this video another 20 times till I have this off to a tee.. Thanks

  • nice work, an easy-to-watch lesson: breaking it all down from simple technique to light embellishment without getting to heavily into musical jargon, which many beginners are overwhelmed with.

  • I think this video was great because you demonstrate the rapid result then you break it down to the steps that us beginners can start off slow. Thanks

    keep posting them vidz

  • Thank you very much for watching...

  • wow man. I only just startin to learn and geeze its gonna be a loooong day lol. What harp u got there as in the key?. It sounds great!!!!!!.

  • it sounds like an e maybe.....

  • its an "E" harp

anyway nice one man, this kept me busy for hours!

  • jackthespack er It's an "A" harp played in 2nd

  • "Anyway I messed up"...that's SO funny, considering...err my thought procedure could barely keep up with your playing. You're awesome Jason, I wish I could have seen your experience becoming the harp player you are today. Did you start young? Were you just really apt? Anyway, thanks for the videos!!!

  • great playing man goes to show never judge a book...

  • hey J, like I told you on my latest post, I´m a great fan, thanx for all your teaching, bu i want to ask you if there would be any problem if try to translate your lessons to spanish? You really rock! Last saturday I´d play your riffs on my parties and they really put people on the mood! Thanx for your music man!

  • That would be awsome! You should do it here on you tube! wow thats cool! Thanks man!

    J

  • Excellent lesson! Really enjoy what you're doing - thank you.

  • Thanks Zobot! I appreciate the positive feedback! more to come soon! thanks again!!!

    J

  • God Damn, I'm lost....again. You make it seem so damn easy. I want to come live with you for 3 weeks to learn this shit. I struggle way to much, it seems like I can't even get "Bending" down right. My songs need some serious harpage(If you will?). kick ass videos man....and I love the hair.

    Best Regards

    The Guitar Man

  • very talented, but loose the crappy rock hair.

  • loose? Try 'lose'. May Jason will consider losing the hair (which I think looks cool) once you learn to speak your primary language properly.

  • He'll probably get around to it when you take his dick out of your mouth.

Next time you criticize someone's spelling maybe you should check your own before you respond. "May Jayson" should be "Maybe Jayson" Douche!

  • I don't care who hates my hair...lets not fight over that or spelling or anything. We all havve too much time on our hands.

    J

  • That's a cool harp. It's like a push-button Marine Band or something. Great phrasing, dude. Making a lot of notes mean something. Awesome.

  • Hey Thanks for watching. It's just a regular golden melody from hohner ...no push button...thanks for the nice words!

    J

  • What Brand do you play?

  • hmm.. i dont have any idea who this dude is ...nor does it make me wanna pick a harmonica and play... but i can see from the 2 or 3 videos i stumbled upon .. this dudes awesome in music and has a dam good personality that goes with it ..seems to help alot of people out teaching the simplistics and all that shit .. which is always a good thing .. so i felt the need to give a genuine compliment.. nice to see (even by accident) ~.~

  • I speak only to reinforce your wisdom Mr Ricci, "timing is everything." Even the heavenly spheres revolve around the golden orb with utterly exact timing! Some of Little Walters works are simply no more than warbles with an odd bend here and there. But even with his warbles he's accenting or playing off the beat with utterly impeccable timing. This is the secret of the wisdom teachings, left to us by the venerable master Jacob.

  • You can stream several live versions of "Goenophiny" for free on archive dot org. Just look up "jason ricci", and you'll find links to a ton of his live shows.

  • Jason, you are one bad ass harp player! And I like that hair!

  • Thankyou Sir!!

  • Man I have so much woodshedding to do. Damn.

  • Jason: Now that I've started to upload a series of five lessons on "Whammer Jammer," I googled the song and discovered this video. You beat me by a week! I swear I didn't know about your video when I decided to hit WJ. This stuff you're putting out is great!

  • Adam No worries I barely even mention Whammer It's more or less just about comping whatever..You got it man.

  • Speaking for the peanut gallery, I'm happy for every clip either of you puts up, regardless of whether you might be covering the same material. It's useful to see what you do differently and what you do the same.

    Thanks again!

  • Apologies J,just found last post (Goenophoney) hidden away in the myriad of harp-related stuff,it just doesn't show up when I do a Ricci/harp search?

    Dynamite playing,thanks.

  • Jason: You should consider starting off each lesson telling viewers what key harp you're playing. GREAT stuff, btw.

  • Thanks Sian ...I got all the keys up in the description box ( Top left) for all the instructional stuff...Thanks again.

  • oops top right... sorry..

  • Jason - Goenophiny is on your main web page but I don't think it's linked on your MySpace page.

This is AWESOME stuff... Thanks so much for sharing with the harpin' community!!!

    -BB

  • You heard it here Kids! Thanks again Bob!

  • Your videos are great, the custom harp segments are very cool any chance of guiding us through customizing a harp. Also are you ever going to come play in Australia ?

  • I've addressed this before in text and in one of these videos...but to answer the question...No...it would be way to hard for me to do that and it would take too many episodes...sorry..I am planning some more regular videos soon though...Thanks for watching!!
