  • Americans are dicks

  • @quixoticfallcy Generalizations like that won't get you anywhere. America did what it had to in order to maintain an advantage against it's allies and enemies, even if that meant challenging the authority and honor system of Japan and the rest of Asia.

  • I wish this documentary wouldn't have skipped the part of the bakumatsu and boshin war. Since it says history of Edo period to Meiji restoration, they should have brought up some time with that civil war since the end of the Boshin war opened the new era of Meiji.

  • New Total war Stand alone expansion for Shogun 2 total war

"Fall of the Samurai" will be set in this era

  • Fuck America

  • japan thought they would of lost the war with the west, not because they would not of defeated the Americans but because they thought Britain and Russia would do the same. after the usa killed hundreds of thousands of people in an rebellion in the north of japan the trade agreement was changed, then after WW1 and america claiming all islands in the pacific ocean and all trade routs japan had enough this led to the influenced attack on pearl harbor.

  • The Japanese merely watched what happened to China after they tried to oppose the west and lost (Opium War against the British). China was colonized and was drained of its power and wealth, so that by the 1900's they were reduced to practically a 3rd world country. By opening trade with the west, Japan was able to modernize and become a world power that would challenge America in the 1940s.

  • Well done. This is how a documentary ought to be: fair, objective, and educational.

  • @gre36789 You are a moron and a totally hateful person, how can one wish the death of another human being, let alone a complete country? I bet you are the pride of your family...maybe you are the spawn of the devil, I would never wish death on anyone but I hope that one day you will come to know what pain and suffering are all about and that you might lose people that you love so dearly.

  • I hope you all folks realize there would have been no major war with the Americans if Japan had refused. It is the 1850s, we were a divided country, far from home, without good supply lines, and men and material to take Japan. Technology can only take you so far, so it was a bluff. We did the same thing in Taiwan (Rover Incident, 1867) and Korea (in 1871) and both ended in failures, we got bored and went home. The British and Russians are a different matter however.

  • I've read up on Japanese history and in particular the time when Westerners forced trade on them with these ships.

I can't imagine what it must have been like for the Japanese villagers on the coast at the time.

Going to the docks to ready their fishing boats, when suddenly, out of the morning mist, comes this massive black ship.

To them it must have been like if we woke up one morning and suddenly found that alien spaceships had landed in our back yards.

  • Eiichi Shibusawa says " United States introduced Japan to the world." And I say "So do this video."

  • The only reason the American's were developed than Japan was because they were opened to technology trade.

I say Americans are good in creating things to derive at first. But there is no one that surpasses the ability of Japanese to develop in finest and very unique way.

Japan's Anime culture is greatly admired around the world. China and Korea currently copies flat as same as their style. This is one good example.

  • lol hey atleast america gave them gifts, so it's not precisely bullying, it's sad though if japan would've said no it would've come out as warfare and blood. glad the japanese opened themselves for trade because today, we would'nt have sony, playstation 3, nintendo, japanese automobiles, japanese ramen, anime, and amazing japanese technology.

  • Holy shit perry is such a badass

  • @funkkiller No. He's just an ass.

  • fuking america lol

  • i like how many people ignorantly judge Americans based off this video. I'm not saying that America was right, but it is still fascinating that people think that their opinions are worth a damn.

  • @HarbingerGunner Haha, yeah in the grand scope of history they're dominating our car industry and we've promised to send our military to their land if they get attacked. Not too bad I say, could have been a lot worse.

  • the american commander is an asshole

  • the american commander represent the exact same overconfidence and twisted world view of many americans today, that they can do as they please.

  • and a little while later, the japs did the same shit to the chinese

  • @felnaris how is your mum? I hope her ass is no longer sore.

  • how about this?

    this is also japanese history

    come see !

    to my blog!!!!!!

  • Why is everyone bashing America?? I'm sure there are bastards in other countries too; not everyone is good. ANYWAY.. this video is about JAPAN.

  • China and Japan should have united against the Europeans, that would have been an interesting twist to history.

  • Comment removed

  • @ccheng21 I'm European and I think that was and is a very bad idea. China and Japan are more likely to start a war on their own, and even if that happened the USA would have supported EU...

  • I cannot help myself but to hate America more and more every day. For arrogantness in present, as well as vile lurid and licentious acts of the past.

  • @SatoTM2 you should read my comment

  • must be mathew perries great great grea grandfather

  • there are a lot of opinions about japan here.

but i think the history of japan is not dirty because japan still exist.

especially meiji restoration is one of the biggest decision of japan.

i don't think japan copied other nation in all aspects.

old japanese people inported other nation's ideas and modifyed them

so that we could use them in our life style.

    sorry for poor english

  • Good movie, but this movie does not talk about common peoples. Samurai was just 10% of peoples in the period. They were government official workers.

Others (farmer, craftman, merchant and etc) were the peoples made Japanese cultures. They enjoyed their life in the period. They were not slaves of sumurai.

  • japan would have been better off as an american state. japanese still think of foreigners as gimmicks, and as novelties that do wear off and should be sent home after a while.

  • These power struggles still live on today. Who controls what regarding resources, territory, and way of life.

  • adoreiiiiiii

  • oh....japan's golden era...fuck man....i miss edo period. during the time, there were no foreigners in japan.

modern japan is far from their best.

there are tons of filthy foreign pigs in the islands. 0 gaijins in japan. this is my dream.

  • @shiokan02 xenophobia. You have it.

  • Comment removed

  • @gre36789 You're a horrible person.

  • @gre36789

It's rather ironic that you called the Japanese arrogant when all you have to do is look at America's own history of Imperialism, and the attitude we have towards other nations today. (assuming you are an American)

  • @gre36789

    Go to hell

  • japan has such an interesting history. i'm going to japan next year to live and work!

  • you'll love it, an amazing people and country..

You will be in for a culture shock..

  • why do you think Japan said fuck it and went on the attack during WWII? cause these bastards fucked everything up...they ruin cultues around the world and what do they have to show for it? an atomic bomb? cheeseburgers and dumb bitches from holywood? Great going america cause you know this is what i'd rather want....like there culture is more interesting and had more to it ...not this fame and money and militaristic domination over alot of countrys in the world. fuck the american way of death

  • i agree i hate americs thought of its supiriority over countries but altough they were the one that came and forced a trade on japan it was at least better modernizing japan teaching it how to trade with other countries if america didnt make japan open trade they wouldnt be a first world country now there wouldnt be alot of things especially all the cool electronics th jap invented.

  • @TheUnforgivingOne Yay lead the way to revoultion over the american basturds.

  • @JAPANKILLER100 WTF are you talking about. Yeah Japan was the agressor in WWII but after we Japan surrendered the US helped set up a democracy instead of a imperialistic government. Now Japan is a great ally. I would like to keep it that way instead of talking shit about them.

  • So, this is the beginnings of globalization.

In other words "Open the doors, let me in, and let's trade. Or else I'll blow you to smithereens because I have a more and bigger gun".

Hehehehehehe, I guess it's not new.

  • That was incredible. Thanks for uploading this. I can't think of a better way to spend an afternoon.

  • 1:25

Matthew Perry seems to have a very strong personality & strong leadership, and be sooooo manly.

He reminds me of Douglas MacArthur...

  • i know i like his style

  • @Modfran fuk you bitch, then what do you think who you are. fuking useless, masturbate all day. and do nothing

  • @khaiho95 lol.. wut?

  • japan is smart nation.

    not like china stuborn nation.

  • Proud nation meets another proud nation. Very interesting.

  • The Americans should have listened to the Japanese if they said leave then they should leave. They do have smaller brains if they couldn't see that they were not welcome.

  • meh... thats america for u always takin shit from other people lol

  • agreed it was just them bullying a smaller nation. something that they havent grown out of yet

  • @0HellBlaze0 notice something? japan has always copied other nations, stolen their inventions, and never invented anything themselves. i say japan benefited greatly.

  • @ihateyoujerkoff

Japan is very good at taking a good idea and making them better. That doesn't mean it is stealing. It is just improving a good idea for their own good. The automobile, train, telecommunications, and civil society was vastly improved upon by Japanese minds. Japanese civil life is far more advanced now than even that of the United States. Better educated, no drugs, less crime, more wealthy, and produce better quality goods. Japan beat the west at their own game.

  • @TigerPantsRocks i agree

  • @TigerPantsRocks Now those are some "facts" pulled straight out of your arse.

  • @ihateyoujerkoff You can easily say that the Americans copied some of their technology from the British, While the british copied alot of their technology from the arabs. While the arabs copied alot of their technology from the romans and so on and so on. Who gives a fuck? Everyone copies from eachother. It just gives them room for improvement on their newer civilization, All technologies should be learned from and then improved. There are also BILLIONS of Japanese patents.

  • @0HellBlaze0 Hey, If they hadn't had bullied japan to trade, Nintendo and all that stuff woudn't have been invented, and they would be just a rufeless with their isolation as anything?

  • @0HellBlaze0 You're saying that as if the British are completely innocent. "The sun never sets on the British Empire"

  • @prepschoolkid I'd rather be a frickkin Hindo in the British Empire, than just MEET an american.

  • @AngelBiLove Really? Because most Americans are pretty nice. Are we perfect? Of course not, but to say you wouldn't even want to meet an American is pretty bigoted and idiotic on your part. Also what is a "hindo", I've met plenty of Hindus, but never a hindo.

  • @prepschoolkid Well you still need to learn alot then n.n

  • @AngelBiLove I think you need to learn more.

  • I don't understand the harm in trading with the Americans.

  • The trade rules would have been unfair to the Japanese. Japanese saw what happened to the Chinese during the time. The European and consequently the American attitude at the time was that of superiority- in my opinion, and the were in competition to conquer other nations.

  • I know. Americans are progressive people although they want things "instant" but I don't see the harm as well.

  • no shinsengumi?

    sad

  • @MrAkiraakira Shinsengumi existed during the Meiji Restoration -- A time where the samuraihood was extinguished. So the Shinsengumi replaced the defunct samurai warriors.

  • I mean even if the Japanese were being stubborn, it was their right to be stubborn, it was their country for crying out loud, what perry made was effectively nothing more than a declaration of war by a nation who just happened to have bigger ships and smaller brains

  • How did they have smaller brains? They were technologically advanced! They had cameras, guns, cannons and trains.

  • lol which counry inventend the train? oh wait i remember it was britain

the country to first use cannon and create guns wasnt america either.

and cameras.... now i might give you that one but i still don't think america made them

  • the bigger the ships, the smaller the brain

  • These barbarian battles will sink your butt.

  • thanks so much again for this complete upload... =)

  • lol at 15 years being missed out there

  • this is a beautiful documentary of an important history period of japan - well done! :-)
