Immigration is the cause of our urban sprawl problem, PERIOD. We are accepting over a quarter MILLION people a year, and they'll have to live somewhere. Jane & Finch was once a farm; now, it's a 'gangster's paradise.' If the 'green' types REALLY care about things like urban sprawl, they'll support a hard cap on immigration, like they're proposing in the UK. It's not Canada's responsibility to save the developing world from overpopulation.
Urban sprawl is caused by the fact that landowners can pocket the increasing value of land. This is the incentive for all land speculation, urban sprawl and every other abuse of the natural environment. The ironic fact is that all land value is created not by individual owners but by the community of all people. All economists agree. But everywhere we mostly give this value away to "owners" who do not create and therefore do not earn that value. Taxing it away would end sprawl and other abuses.
Oh give it up! If people wanted to live in the nasty city they would be doing it. We move to the edge of the city because living in the city sucks its that simple. People don't want to live packed like rats in dence cities they just don't. You can't make people live where they don't want to. Want to stop urban sprawl? find a way to stop population growth. There is no other way. Burn the citys down and plant corn, cities and the people that live in them suck
