Hope Jackman & Meg Johnson, sadly, were two of the most under-rated vocalists of the 20th century,so it was great to hear their superb talents here.Seeing Meg as Pearl seems weird when you consider all she did before this. Not that I'm knocking Emmerdale,I love,it,& maybe Meg is more than happy with her role. She is knocking on a bit after all! But,as always, there isn't anything VW can't turn her hand to,& she always picks the most appropriate cast members for whatever she does.
Hope Jackman played Matron "Mama" Morton in the original eighties London production of Chicago at the Cambridge Theatre. I can never forget her entrance, slinking on stage singing "When you're good to Mama" in a dress split WAY up high.
What a voice, she could knock you back in your seat, and what a magnetic presence. I heard her several times and she was a total show stopper. The audience would be on their feet baying for more, and sometimes Ms Jackman would oblige, the saucy minx she was.
Amazing. Just saw this for the first time, and it's already taken up residence in my head for goodness knows how long. AMAZING vocal performances in this, brilliant song...just WOW.
I love this, I was not born when this was out, but even I can enjoy it 20 years later.
I love Meg Johnson, what an amazing actress and singer! I can't find any information on Hope Jackman, I know she is dead, but other than that, I know nothing.
I can't believe Victoria Wood even writes the songs, she is a genuine genius! I love her to death! Amazing sketch, but my favourite is the sea side one, Marie, Clarie and Min.
thank you for posting this, just one of the BEST Victoria Wood songs ever...!! Still so fresh after 25 years! I come back and view this regularly... Hope Jackman - brilliant, a sad loss to the industry...
I remember the fashion for having communal dressing rooms in stores back in the 80's. It was terrible as you tried to back into a corner to stop people staring at your big wobbly bottom. Not that you wanted to look at anyone else. It just wasn't British.
Quite amazing, and still fresh after - what- twenty years? Meg Johnson was indeed a powerful Mama Morton in Chicago at the Adelphi, but in fact in the Original London production at the Cambridge in the late 1970s, Hope Jackman played Mama. Great to see them both together working Wood's brilliant lyrics ... and also Celia Imrie and Susie Blake as minor background characters.
love the maid classic
