been a zappa fanatic since 76 and LOVE most everything he ever did...... studio tan and sleep dirt being the most difficult works for me to "learn" to love. having heard almost everything he's recorded he still defies classification into any genre including "hard rock".
Amusing to hear George Duke trying to fit his gospel, jazz, and fusion licks into Zappa's hard rock drivel. Points to Duke for somehow making it work. Doesn't really fit, unfortunately, and the two differing worlds collide incorrectly. Surprising that Duke enjoyed himself in this situation, as it would be like Oscar Peterson trying to jam with Led Zeppelin.
@EnterDaMatrix hahahahahaha right??? gtfo indeed. if by "drivel" he means dynamic harmonic/melodic aural superiority, and by "hard rock" means pretty much no style left unmolested... then sure. bahahahaha
I feel that Frank Zappa, although a seeming master of confidence and intent, used his comical intros to almost "beg admittance" for his real musical talent (that showed in almost every song's development into fine, fine jazz/rock.
He stands even higher for this; it is no put-down! He shows that he respects MUSIC enough to do the clown act in deference to the main work. He is a hellified guitarist, and when George Duke is about ten feet from you on stage, you either kidnaped him or you rock.
@PaulRattlehead there is still so much we can do in the music world. Using different instruments for different styles, combing different styles. But right now we've come to a standstill

He was very popular in the UK (where I am). I remember reading that he was more popular in Europe than the US. I don't know if there's any truth in that.
@ilovemilfs69able He's saying this: "He's been called The seducer, hes been called freak, he's been called a perverted genious." Frank obviously, just like you only heard the word freak in there ;) Ps: He's speaking Swedish.
I feel very sorry for my father who in his later years has become a zappa fan. He so very dearly regrets missing all the stockholm shows frank did when some of his friends were going crazy about them.
What a fine, primal look at Frank playing darn-near conventional blues-rock -- I can almost understanding what he's doing on that SG by watching this. What's runny is I could almost feel a whiff of macho in his attack, which later seemed to be more about dancing on the frets than "stabbing" the blues as much as he does here. Pretty neat glimpse. Wish I could come near approaching this. (My t"What Exit" and "Voyage" videos are about as fancy as I'll probably ever get..)
