It was not about the slavery for the most part but more of a right all states felt they had from the beginning of the United States. Healthcare, Slavery, social programs. Slavery was bad, but the northern government was not the african-american's saviour.. Remember 100 years later it was the people without rights who protested this 100 year old union that "saved them" who stood up against the laws in the north and in the south.

The states are sovereign entities and never surrendered their sovereignty to the federal government. In fact they specifically reserved all powers not delegated to the federal government as per the 10th Amendment.
