  • the dhereket compositions are devastating. its incredibly hard to play dehrkits like this at this speed. just marvelous.

  • To all who learn/play/perform north indian classical music, i have a question. I know it is a sign of respect to touch the ear(s) when refering to a senior/deceased musician whose composition you're going to play. Does anyone know why or how this tradition came into practice?

  • @affluent111 why part of the question, i think is becuz you are not supposed to hear your teachers name. so technically it is a metaphor to closing your ears.

  • @lomer02071985 Bhari:

  • pt. nayan ghosh is really something else. he has SOO many compositions stored in his head of many ancient legends of tabla and is able to reproduce amazingly...PLUS he is an amazing sitar player, nayanji is truly a master of the art of indian classical music

  • The lehra or nagma is Raag Rageshwari

  • this is an awesome tabla solo but what really amazed me was that he could say a composition while playing teentaal. Any tabla player would know that takes a lot of skills and either a lot or very little concentration

  • @somedumbass90 it´s like singing trigun: once you try it, you´ll get the hang of it.. =)

  • I'm sorry Sinisterplots, maybe i got it all wrong. i had no idea you referred to the master's tabla as SHIT and that you enjoyed it like DOPE. Wow, great to know as a Christian tabla player there's such a vast vocabulary, that was still unkown to me with my upbringinging and background. God bless pure souls like you. Keep it up. At least I'm glad you enjoyed the tabla, no matter your elevating language.

  • As for the wonderful jobs you suggested, maybe you could help handle them all, as I've been a bit tied down last 35 years playing the tabla. you've played 20 years. Maybe just handle the jobs you suggested for another 15 years. That way you might have a better start for tabla all over again. good lck.

  • Hey Lady Drummer. I'm American. I posted comments here 2 years past. I'm glad I felt the same about this master when I heard him in Manhattan NYC. I dunno the big names you've written, but I'm a professional guitarist and drummer. I play jazz n rock. I jus got laid wid his double gig that day tabla and sitar. Glad you spoke up. G'bless.

  • OK. Lemme add more info here. I've met Anindoji, Swapanji and Suresh Talvalkarji on different occasions, and they all had one common point....that Nayanji's a complete artiste. Anindoji specially commented about the authenticity of Nayanji's tabla, his weight and speed. He said "Noyon's Tobla is complete. He is dictionary, I am repharring to.....I labh his compjishaans and i use them in my solo Tobla"."

  • I've heard some of the most fabulous solos by this master, some accompaniments that took listeners to a terrific high. He's played like electric with Buddhaditya Mukherjee, and Vilayat Khan. Just the other day i saw India's top singers and instrumentalists at his sitar concert and hearing him sing too. Met him backstage. He was mobbed. Disarming modesty. Saw a stunning sight. Him with Zakirji who was playing next. Their respect for one another was a treat. What more.

  • I'm not known to Nayanji directly. It was disgusting reading nasty comments by asaeed27 n others. He is held in highest regard today in the entire music world and by all musicians. Whether it is his knowledge, his technical prowess, his teaching abilities, his generosity, what-not. His virtues as a tabla player is among the finest in the world today. Can I request the authors of his videos to either delete all unkind remarks or get his clippings out of youtube. Give this master some respect.

  • How do you allow such drug addicts to write their comments here?

  • I am talking about sinisterplots

  • hands down killer tabla. bless you nayanji.

  • on a scale of 1-10 the compositions he played are at a 10 difficulty level

  • Hello Ankur

First, Thanks for the wonderful video of my Guruji Pt Nayan Ghosh.

As you can see there are several derogatory comments about this great player on the video you have posted by 2 users.

Could I please request you to kindly delete all of them as they are hurting the sentiments of several music lovers, musicians and desciples of Nayanji.

It would be a favor you would have done to the musicians community.

    Thanks and best regards.

  • BUT! remember, if you are just defending him blindly, while certain things are TOO starking, it'l go against you. Its not me alone, there are bigwigs of this industry who know it and say it behind his back. Its out there man.

  • Krishna, post more videos of ur playing, and demostrate some good exercises in Dherekete for your fellow Iyengar tabla player =)

  • sure man...will do that soon (:

  • greatest solo tabla player

  • All other Tabla players encourage their students. The big ones and the lesser-known. But inspite of his institute being one of the most famous in Indian music, none have rises to glory in so many decades. Is it that Nayan Bhai wants to gobble up all the fame and encourage students who have already riden piggy back on the fame and names of their gurus, leaving his students in the dumps, where people don't even pay dime for the 'khandani baaj'? I am shocked!

  • Well said. Nayan Ghosh has a great pair of hands on the tabla and bucketloads of traditional taleem. But the guy is a self-serving jerk who does indeed gobble up opportunities he should be throwing his students' way. Probably why he never made it to the top league in spite of all the talent. Recent days have seen Ghosh emerge as a serious exponent of the concert barter gharana which is very much in vogue these days. Even shaagirdi these days is motivated by the prospect of material gain.

  • True. His own students play in small restaurants where people don't even notice them, some are never seen, while Zakir's students are his accompanying artists on his Sitar tours and big concerts in India. He says 'wah wah' to the same Zakir-style Tabla he bitterly criticizes in closed doors, while his own students who obviously play much better, don't even get a small chance to perform even in his own institute.Nayanbhai should not blame anyone but himself. A great player...with strange ways.

  • If you observe, most of the biggies in the Tabla world have atleast one student worth the name. Nayanbhai's students it is said, have far superior taleem than most of the youngsters today. Neither in India nor abroad, do any ever surface, instead they struggle totally alone, with hopes of getting somewhere.Any sensible person must'nt blame them. I love Indian music. have seen many greats.I feel strongly for ingenuity, something Indians seem to lack and shun shamelessly!

  • Yes Tapan all these are really his qualities I agree, but try also to look at it from another's perspective, investigate and find out and you'l see that what I am saying is true.View the current situation, there are and were other highly displeased desciples who have given them their soul. Not all are 'ungrateful'.

  • wOW man! Thats not soemthing every musician can manage! yet his hands are always so warmed, like he's always practicing!I saw his other vids too! He's got lil kiddies? Boy they must be swell talented!

  • Its one thing to accept another mortal blidnly just because tradition says so, but another to investigate and justly and rationally accept certain starking realities about him. He is a great payer and teacher and a decent human being.Nothing against him though. peace.

  • you are a bloody idiot and shall never learn anything in life.

  • How do we know if they have? Are any heard? Except in their own houses or little restaurants? While students of all big Tabla players are on the scene, his are nowhere. Dont tell me its their fault. As per what I have heard, he doesent have time out of being the head of that school, students get lessons once in years. He may be a benevolent teacher, but its like giving wings to a bird and cutting them the next moment.

  • Its very easy to put all the blame on 'unfaithful' students, and project him as holier than thou just coz he's yr guru. Dude, do you know I've heard even big guns of the industry talk behind his back about how he likes none of his students to come up, nor does he give them any time. How is it that different students, of different ages many who dont even know each other say only one thing "He doesent want us to rise, whats the point in all that soild training and our riyaaz?"

  • Look I am not a musician, but these are one of the few things I've come across and most ppl in the industry know it.Theres no point in endlesly arguing .Investigate, find out, nobodys perfect, he n you could be wrong for a change.

  • I am not trying to offend him, infact I am a fan of his playing. But these are things I've 'seen' and not 'heard'. So leave me out of it, if you feel he's the most perfect being and all his desciples are traitors or whatever, dont involve me, coz my answers gonna be the same...coz thats all i've seen and I m not arguing abt anything else.

  • I am not involved with this little world of narrow-minded , back-stabbing, insecure hypocrates who behave holier than thou to cover-up. I am just an observer. I listen to good music and forget it. So let me out of this shit,I told you what I know, now go take on the real biggies and lets see what they have to say.I care tow hoots about whos doin wat..peace.

  • But I am sure all his traitor students cannot be wrong, there must be someting they all find unreasonable and unjust about him, coz they'r different students of different batches and ages, many who dnt even know each other, all saying the same thing......dude, my journey ends here...this is all the stuff I've come across that I reflect, now its between you and your Guru and others.I am relieved I dont know more coz this shits really stupid. Thanks to God I am not one of you guys hahahha!!!

  • All said n done, he's a great player, in fact unparalled, with great knowledge, and looks to be generally a nice guy...

  • @asaeed27 he is a nice guy! :)

  • Yes he is a great player and a stalwart.

BUT it is said Nayan Ghosh has totally neglected his students for other proirities. He never encourages any of them ( thats why none are ever seen).

Instead he encourages Zakir's students ( he hates Zakir it is said) while his students play in restaurants where people don't even notice they are there..Great people often have strange ways do't they?

  • he is a musical GOD

  • could u upload the full video

  • fantastic tabla nayan ji. you are really awesome tabla maestro.

  • kya baat hai dada!you are great great tabla player of country,we are proud of you !you are a great music asset of india!in this video you have played very hard bols like (ta dha ghidnag tak ghidnag tak dhagdhinag tak)is a very hard bols, but you have played so well and clear at such a great spped, thanks naynji for inspiring us!

  • hmmm.... indias crowded

  • Listen up people:

The full 27 minute version is available on the Asian section of the rhythmweb website. Watch that as Nayan Ghosh reveals more magic

  • I agree, altho the bols for the tabla is like a tongue twister.

  • There is a world of a difference between 'dhere dhere ketetak' and 'dhere kete'. The former can be played at a stretch and even with multiple dheredhere like many Tablaplayers do. But I challenge, show me one living Tablaplayer who can play DHERE KETE ( not dhere dhere ketetak) twice simultaneously. Also, this is only a two minute snippet. One might need to wonder the kind of difficult bols Nayanji may have executed in the balance 118 minutes.

  • Voila! thats right. I guess people are not realizing the difference between dhirdhirkittak and dhirkit, although Nayan sahab has clarified it at the beginning of this clip ( I am sure his Bengali is simple enough to understand). I have heard this entire solo live and he has played the most astounding dhirdhir relas in the vilambit while the drut has gats and tukras with many difficult and yet artistically rich musical vocabulary impeccable played. Wish we could hear longer clips insha Allah.

  • also just because he doesnt play in a certain 'old school'technique, (which one anyways? do you even know? i think it looks like lucknow) doesnt mean he doesnt know how to. it would be wack if he tried to copy the style of the old masters. maybe he doesnt give too much of a shit about that. zakir is fire.

  • naturally the more you study the music, youll find more impressive gurus from other schools. but i also want to reassert that tubbla is not just finger strokes but is comprised of the entire delivery and style of the strokes and speaking of syllables. zakir knows his audience and he is impressive because he has a very unique stage presence and delivery. in fact his is the most original ive seen.

  • I have been playing tabla for over 17 years. Neither Swapanji nor Anindoji nor Zakirji can come anywhere close to Nayanji's two simultaneous DHEREKETE that he has played in the first gat. Neither can they match his speed, clarity, depth and tone. It is a known fact in the music world that Zakirji places both Nayanji's hands on his head and bows to him.

  • Fine agreed. But listen playing a dhirekete bol for 15 secs,30 sec and even 1 min is not same as playing it for 4-5 mins with the same speed.Swapan-ji did that over and over again. This video is not conclusive to tell that.If you have more conclusive stuff give it to me.

  • Conlusive? Nayan Ghosh above is playing what is called an old school techninque. SO the fingering is very very hard to master. Nayan specialises in playing old techniques that modern showboaters like ZAkir will stay well away from!!

  • Hey look I am not arguing with you.Nayan-ji's talent is really has few parallels. But before deriving a conclusion one needs to hear him over a period of time.I have seen even Anindo-ji in his bad days and Rafiuddin Sabri in his peak form. But one or 2 odd performances is not enough.Zakir-ji has been timetested that is why his position is so strong.Have you heard of Bashir Hussain Goga.Beleive me you will stop playing the day you hear him.

  • Zakir time tested?? Time tested tabla player would be Ahmed Jan Thirakwa or Ustad Amir Hussain. Zakir thrives on impressing the LAY AUDIENCE. He dosent try to impress connoiseurs because he knows he will lose the love of the lay audience. What normally impresses connoisseurs dosent impress laymen and vice versa.

  • Hey I hope u dont have an enmity with ZAKIR.We are not trying to bring someone down.We are merely discussing about an art.Dont be so arrogant so that you loose the human touch.People like U are no good because U dont know how to respect others.I hope NAYAN-ji deserves better audience than U.

  • Sorry, I went a bit overboard few days back. Many know that this clip is from a two hour solo of Nayanji in Kolkata to an audience of a few thousand, with Anindoji and Kumar Boseji sitting in front and of course Ajoy Chakraborty and Rashid Khan. The SRA had 20 minutes of that concert posted on their website which stayed there for almost a year and sadly disappeared soon after. There were a few exquisite dhire dhires played there.

  • First of all, I think this whole ranking tabla players things is silly--trying to objectify something so subjective won't work. Personal preference of X tabla player over Y is inevitable--but saying that X tabla player is the best and the rest of you who don't agree with me are stupid is where it's crossing the line.

  • That being said, saying Zakirji doesn't impress connoisseurs is the most untrue thing I've ever heard. Go ask a connoisseur if he enjoys it when Zakirji layers matt taal over rupak while accompanying Shivkumar Sharmaji...moreover if he wasn't a great tabla player then why do most of the top musicians from India call him for their best performances?

  • Finally, at the point that Great Tabla Players like Pandit Anindo Chatterjee and Pandit Kumar Bose appreciate Zakirji's playing, I don't see any justification for saying Zakirji doesn't impress connoisseurs.

  • Maybe i shouldnt have commented the way i did before. After all i should just concentrate on my own playing and appreciate all others.

  • Do you doubt that a person who specializes in dheredhere bols for which Tabla players specially attend his concerts, cannot play dherekete for 5 or 10 minutes at the same speed if he can play it for 15 secs. with this dexterity? I have heard far more difficult dhere bols from Nayanji at greater speeds for a longer periods of time. It is just that you need to hear it to believe it . I have heard most Tabla players acknowledge his dhere as the most superior

  • I would like to hear more Ghen-tadan based boles.Or say Dhene-gene-nana-gene stuff.TAPAN can post such stuff.

  • Good tapan Can u post similair stuff.I am a big fan of Nayanji.Heard allmost all the maestros starting from Thirakwa sahab,Anokelalji,Keramatullah,Allarakkha to Zakirji,Anindoji,Swapanji, Shanker Ghosh, and Nayaji.Such great players really deserve better publicity. Please post more and more of such stuff. His tonal quality is very crisp, very good control on the Ghede-nak based boles. However I would like to hear more dhirey dhirey stuff alongside Swapanji and Anokelalji's dhiredhire.

  • amazing sound from that drum.

  • Pandit Nayan Ghosh Is my father and guru, the Table and Sitar Nawaz of this generation

  • If you are his son/daughter then please can you post videos of him playing. Many would appreciate it.

  • Good Can u post similair stuff.I am a big fan of Nayanji.Heard allmost all the maestros starting from Thirakwa sahab,Anokelalji,Keramatullah,Allarakkha to Zakirji,Anindoji,Swapanji, Shanker Ghosh, and Nayaji.Such great players really deserve better publicity. Please post more and more of such stuff. His tonal quality is very crisp, very good control on the Ghede-nak based boles. However I would like to hear more dhirey dhirey stuff alongside Swapanji and Anokelalji's dhiredhire.

  • tabla prodigy

  • IS THIS SITE NOW FOR " SELF PROMOTION" ...( with the students)...ha! ha!

  • man thats some good tabla playing, ..very clear

  • Also guys, just go check his sitar at New Orleans on this site.

  • Hey hey Sithroya, did ya ever ask Tari Khan himself? Tari's a fan of this guy and some guy from the west coast told me that Tari watched a video of this guy playing at Stanford last summer and kinda saluted him. Anyways, we all watch Tari on this site. He's just playing Kerwa all the time, no meat, no stuff. Just foolin around shaking his head. Go ask Zakir Hussain what he thinks of this guy, OK?

  • Excellent video from a great muscian. I cant believe some of the comments in relation to it. His father was a legend Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. One of his leading deciples is Shri Aneesh Pradhan of the Farukhabad Gharana. There have been concerts where he has played tabla with Ravi Shankar and then the next act would be him playing Sitar with Zakir Hussain on the tabla.

  • Kayaa baat hai .hes awesome ,,,thanks keep it up

  • Very nimble fingers

  • Folks, this is Pandit Nayan Ghosh. Depositary of tabla legacy inherited by his father and his contemporaries, the Late Padma Bhusham Pantid Nikhil Ghosh, founder of Sangeet MAhabharati in Mumbai. He is the best table player of his generation and in memory of his father, Nikhilji I leave this comment here.

  • perfect...

  • this guy is wack.. check out tari khan or zakir hussein

  • i like zakir im a big fan but this Pundit is very good..unless u can do better then dont talk

  • Tari and Zakir are the biggest showboaters. Therefore they get the most publicity. Real experts who play really difficult stuff are not given credit. Unfortunately the retarded audience can only appreciate FLASH and nothing with REAL SUBSTANCE. Real shame!

  • I'm getting deeper in this. Check google search for this guy u'll find great stuff.

  • U gotcha c this guy. saw a gig last weekend in NYC Manhattan. Holy shit, this guy plays tablas and sitar d same way, electrified d audience. saw famous musicians touch his feet after the gig, some kinda Indian respect. he's really cool, absolutely unassuming. they say he's an encyclopedia of tablas n many more instruments. that he's gigged with Ravi Shankar n other big guys. bet on my life, this clip not sped up man. go watch him, u'll no.

  • I love the thaap he does... just like i do :D

and y is the women at the back with the tanpura having an orgasm?

  • why are you trying so hard to be funny?

  • he is also a master on Sitar! he is gurubai to abhijit banerjee, anindo chatterjee and mallar gosh..

  • His DhireDhire sounds great. Love his ability to interweave an open Tun

  • Come on Dhire dhire can be lot better.Listen to SWAPAN-ji's or Anoke-lalji's dhirey dhirey.I dont mean this is any less good. But we need to hear more long dhirey dhiery based relas before concluding.

  • Um I reached no conclusions other than complimenting him on his ability to express a bol.

  • Tabla audio and video is in sync. No skipping of audio. Great reciting of the bols and playing them on tabla should give encouragement for the tabla learners.

  • tırıtagı daaa dirıdigitak...:D:D...

    Adam manyak ya...Sıyırmış :D

  • i bet he could give a mean hand job..Derka Derka

  • Yeah if you watch the chicks head in the backround it starts flipping out at times af if she was having a seizure, definatly sped up.

  • looollllllllllllllll

  • Go watch this guy in a gig, u'll no. he'll give u a wretched electric shock.

  • holy shit! this guy owns that noob in the featured videos.

  • man i bet if he tries to play a trumpet....

  • Talented Gentleman. Enjoyed this one. Tar- tic- a- tic- a- tar...and Yo- Mama..!

  • Masterful!

  • That looks like you sped it up....

  • LMFAO OMG HE SOUNDS SO FUNNY LMFAO

  • get a life

  • Very very excellent.

  • It's awsome, I've started to play tabla (still by myself) I hope to find a good teacher.. anyway, great movie!

  • Don't parts of this look and sound incredibly sped-up/fake?

  • The video/audio does look a little off which makes it seem fake, but if you see him in concert (or any great tabla player), you'll see the same speed and accuracy.

  • yes.

  • zigga zigga zah zah zigga zigga.....

  • reminiscent of the great darf hailing from the pacific northwest.

  • He also plays sitar quite well. I saw him perform in concert once.

  • ...Not.

  • damn, that was amazing...

  • holy hell...
