In case anybody is wondering, this is heavily edited and from an early 1980's commentary Paul Schindler did on "Computer Chronicles", an old TV show about computers that was on PBS for years. It's somewhere around 25 years old. So, people should understand that before they fly off the handle about what he said.
back at the sort of time this clip was probably made, there were problems with many different, incompatible unix systems existing. now, however, we only have a few major unix-likes - linux, bsd, solaris, mac os x etc. while it is still true that code for one platform doesn't always run on another, usually code is fully portable, or only needs a few tweaks to transfer between different systems, and this is one of the big advantages of open source, which is a more recent concept than unix itself.
NO! Unix will infiltrate my computer! I'd better install Nortron Anti-Unix-Interweb-AntiSpy-AntiAd-Security Software Suite in order to protect myself!
Funny as hell and AT&T sold off unix years ago that why Sun Microsystems can now do OpenSolaris all Unix operating systems all have the same core stuff in the HP-UX, Solaris, BSD & Even Mac Os cus its based on BSD all carry some code that is the same on all off them other than that they are verry diff operating systems back when unix was new thgey all basicly had the same code so wrighting programs for Unix was simple
good point. Unix is not Open Source nor is it a free product. And yes there are several flavors of Linux around. Choosing one is part of the decision making process in how the end user interfaces with it. Could be why MS is so interested in branching out to other industries, it knows the end is near.
And it's kind of ridiculous to tie the UNIX label in to being derived from the original Bell UNIX, as only the proprietary unices can do that, and even so, due to the IP problems, only one such UNIX can technically legally exist. Also, BSD (and I believe also a few of the commercial unices), while originally containing Bell UNIX code, had to rewrite all such code in order to appease AT&T.
Linux is not fully posix compliant (almost, but not completely). This isn't considered a big deal among Linux kernel developers. But, as POSIX compliance is what determines the right of X/Open to allow an OS to call itself a UNIX, that makes Linux *technically* not a UNIX. Of course, functionally, it is.
like darkheart220982 said, Linux is not the same when it comes to kernel but the commands are the same which is why it is called Unix-like or Unix based, and even though you might not believe this Mac OS X Leopard is fully UNIX compliant and it can run any POSIX-compliant source code and Leopard is now an Open Brand UNIX 03 Registered Product, conforming to the SUSv3 and POSIX 1003.1 specifications for the C API, Shell Utilities, and Threads.
"I should be using a can opener instead of a screwdriver to open this can of tomato juice" + evil synth music + angry turd = comedy gold. I laughed so hard I cried. Really!
@nickiank I'm laughing at you cause every word he said was true. I'm a programer. I have used Unix based systems(Linux) and I totallly agree. UAnix is NOT user friendly and is NOT as intuitive as windows making it ultimatly inferior OS that may have been aceptable to use 20 years ago, but has failed to adapt to the industry with the exceptiong of Red Hat, OpenSuse, Mandriva, and CentOS. 'Ubuntu' is still by far a clunky OS compared to the aformentioned.
edsexton are you a dumbass Linux is just the Kernal of the Operating System the the too set which is uses is called GNU and do u know wat GNU stands for it stands for GNU's Not Unix because its a hole now set of tools that do what the unixx tool set does so in fact its not unix its a clone get it right
Real good tongue in cheek. Becuase if it isn't the existence of 'iPodLinux' sure kicks the 'Evil Unix Guy's' ass!!! 'Evil Unix Guy' would be much funnier if you could get Jobs, or Woz to do the presentation, next time! For the unaware, however, its an either/or. Either you were introduced early on to the *ux world or you weren't. Evolution has finally to brought us to the point, however where we longer need to pay ransome for Windoze!!
I don't think it's funny, he's right. I don't understand why people are trying to stuff it into every corner like it's some kind of spray on insulator.
That's f'in hilarious, count me as one of the six. :) I haven't laughed that hard in a while, especially when his face turns red as he says "USER HOSTILE". I love how his hate slowly comes to a boil...hahaha classic.
Even though it's been almost three years since I first saw this video, it still cracks me up.

no wait i´ve been wrong. linux is an unixish OS not and not based on it. if unix/unics makes the first platform kernel, then dos even run on it.
granitfaust 4 years ago
GNU/Linux is not unix. It has different kernel and is open. The only similarity with unix is a bunch of commands. Nothing else.
darkheart220982 4 years ago 3
So let´s make an new OS with graphical interface on the original unics kernel!

In other words, BSD and Solaris.
