  • he looks like he has the tourette syndrome when he changes his tempo

  • I fell special because i was there

  • I keep thinking I'll only watch a little bit of Mangini's solos cause they're all so long, but I always end up staying for the whole thing... damn he's good :O

  • mike portnoy who?

  • He is incredibly fast... but I have yet to find a clip on youtube of him playing anything musical or nice to listen to...

I'm not saying that he can't - there are plenty of comments pointing out how good & versatile he is & I'm prepared to believe this - but most youtube clips are of him demonstrating incredible speed. Take this as a criticism of his fans, if you like, but that seems to be the only thing most youtubers are interested in....

  • @SAHBfan No it´s not speed it´s rythms and patterns. New thinking. This IS nice to listen to for us who gets it. But don´t worry, I don´t get Picasso, but then again I am not really a painter

  • Crazy singles on the snare!! His footwork is one of the best! Seen him live twice!

  • This makes me very happy! Mangini is awesome!

  • i don't see him do much speedy stuff with his feet im not taking away from his amazing hand speed but im not seeing any speed from his feet it's kind of disapointing

  • @SuperGilbs Poly rhythms don`t need to go fast. Trust me, he can go fast if he needs too

  • @SuperGilbs He´s had problems for a while with his knees. He now has gone through knee surgery on both his knees and are still recovering. Even on the DT audition he wasnt fully up to speed (haha). But just wait, until the tour with DT he will be back in business, and I expect will blow our minds as per usual. Knowing him, he is extremely meticulous in his preparations. Read the 18 page special in Drumhead magazine and you will see what I mean ;-)

  • @nengstro wow yeah thanks for not being a dick when i asked that i actually had no idea that he was having problems with his knees so thanks for telling me

  • @SuperGilbs He´s had knee surgery, that´s why.He will be up to speed with his old self for a while. Read his extensive interview in the latest Drumhead Magazine, it´s awesome. Really like Mike and his drumming, love for him to be in DT...

  • @SuperGilbs At this time he just had had knee surgery due to excessive double bass drumming over the years......Watch the newer vids from his Solos on tour with DT and you will see he is getting up there again. But I have read he needs to change his technique to spare his knees, which might take some more time - so give him 6 months from now.....

  • king of hi-hats

  • 3:20

    oh even lawder.

  • 2:45

    oh lawd.

  • holy crap!! haha, awesome drumming Mike

  • the kit sounds like paper and cardboard. i don't find it that rhymthmical. just fast. perhaps not so creative as other drummers.

  • lol ur not hearing the kit mic. and its extremely rhymthmical you just dont know what your talking about. nothing is ever random and he never goes out of time its all polyrhythms. its a clinic so of course its lots of fast stuff

  • i didn't say random. i didn't say out of time. i was stating my opinion.

  • not saying u did but u said it wasnt rhythmical. thats not an opinion either it is or it isnt and this is obviously very rhythmical. maybe you meant musical thats a little more subjective

  • well, maybe rhythmical is the wrong word, but i think you got the idea.

  • to drumeric33:

At a drum clinic you want to see musicians do things that you can't do. I don't want to go a clinic to see a musician do things I can do myself at.

  • whats your point?

mangini is my teacher and my favorite drummer read the rest of my comments. the "playing fast and unmusically" comment was pure sarcasm

  • to drumeric33:

My point is that it's good to go to a drum clinic and see Mangini (and other musicians) do fast rolls that you can't do yourself. If he did regular rolls that I can do at home myself then I might as well listen to myself at home and not go to a clinic.

  • lol my point is, i agree.

  • to eljaz:

The drums don't sound good because of the way they are tuned. You can get those drums to sound much better.

  • @Stefan990 it is more the recording device, not as much the drums.

  • fuck you dude he,s a amezing drumer he is one of the drummers of steve vai noeb

  • mm maybe ur right. i should just eat my words really. :D he's a pretty fucking great drummer.

  • yeah he is;-)

  • to norwayfinland:

Some people don't understand that there are musical displays then there are technical displays. When someone is displaying technique, you can't judge the music and say that the music is not good. And when someone is displaying music, you can't say the technique is not highly skilled.

  • dude first im a kid i dont understand your highschool words 2 i dont see that the music is not good he,s is god on the drums dude and his toms sound great nothing wrong with not at al

  • to norwayfinland:

At 3:03 he says he "was playing fast not musically." This means he was displaying technique and not music.

  • That was an joke he made earlier about people ripping on him bc he "only plays fast" and people not understanding that this is a drum solo clinic... He can do what he wants

  • THis guy should cover the Album ...And Justice for All by Metallica. Then, again, the drum parts for that are too easy for this guy.

  • sou mais o RONALDO.... xD

  • no se si es el wey q esta grabando pero parece que se la esta metiendo mike mangini a distancia pinche pendejo deja de quejarte

  • nice quick and accurate

  • holy shit.....

  • pretty much this guys unreeeeallll

  • hes teaching me :)

  • i love the criss crossed limb corrdination part at the beginning (right hand left against left hand right foot)

  • hey man, thanks so much for uploading this video. i really love mangini's playing and as you said below, he's not just all about playing fast, he's about playing musically. he played the zeppelin medley in australia and it was AMAZING.

so thanks again and MANGINI RULES!

  • "Chopzilla" drummers like Mike Mangini and Virgil Donati approach drumming like it's a race car event.. All about who can drive the fastest..

I guess there's a place for 'sports approach' to drumming but too often it sends the wrong message to young drummers who play way too busy, don't listen, and can't figure out why they are not working!

  • again

    here we are

before he did this whole clinic, he saw me and asked if this was going on YouTube... i said most likely.

he said he hates youtube because of all the people on there who think all he can do is play fast. remind you of anyone?

and the part of the solo where he had to readjust his cymbal... it was at that part that he said "o, my bad, i guess its because i was playing fast and not musically"

  • and here you go, critiquing the fastest drummer in the world... if you think there is no technique, if you think there is less skill put into what he is doing, then you put something up hot shot.

    ready... go

  • When did drumming become just an ego driven competitive sport with the emphasis on the fastest hands and best stick tricks?

  • guitars did it too

  • Q. Can he tastefully and with good time play rock, funk, bebop, or latin with a rhythm section and making it all groove?

    Q. Does he put the music first and listen to the other musicians or does he overplay forcing them to go with his ideas?

    Q. Can he play a sensitive ballad with dynamics and with brushes?

  • Drummers like Steve Smith, Jack DeJohnette, Billy Hart, Billy Cobham, Dennis Chambers, Steve Gadd, Antonio Sanchez are some of the baddest drummers and though they can play lightning fast have great instincts, always play musically, and above all they LISTEN and compliment the music they are playing.

  • RANDY

    seriously, cut it out

    heres the deal

A - yes, he can play a good groove. right before this solo he did a 45 minute led zeppelin medley and he nailed every single beat.

A - most definitely. have you sat and listened to the intricacy of this solo? watch his feet, watch his hands... count what hes doing... keep the beat with the combinations of what his extremities are doing.

A - can you play a sensitive ballad with dynamics and brushes?

  • Yes I can actually play a sensitive ballad with brushes and with color as well as with dynamics, and I LISTEN..

  • My point is; I believe Mike Magini is a fine drummer and could probably sit in on one of my jazz or funk gigs and actually swing..

What bothers me and is my point is too much emphasis in clinics (and it's perpetuated mostly by the drum industry to sell drums, sticks, & cymbals)is on this 'who's the fastest drummer' thing which has nothing to do with whether the drummer can actually play with taste, musicality, and good time, and using chops (rudiments) creatively and practically.

  • Teaching private lessons now for 13 years I get my share of guys who are totally influenced by the hype and just want lessons to play fast & flashy around the kit and with stick tricks and with no interest in learning to actually play the snare drum or drum kit with a musical approach and are often impatient and unwilling to commit to the many hours of practice to become a "Chopzilla".

  • Mike Magini I know can actually play. I was Mike and Dom Famularo do a clinic that was educational as well as entertaining. And if I recall Mike scatted Zappa's "Black Page"..

  • Whoops, the word is 'saw'..

  • I meant to say 'I saw Mike and Dom Famularo' ..

I have a tendency to rant a little and I know I'll probably get the lion's share share of nasty comments.. lol..

This isn't so much about Mike Magini as it is about how the industry turns the artistry of drumming into a 'pissing contest'..

  • well you failed to state that it is more about the industry than mike... and next time, message me.

again, it is a drum clinic... it is essentially a solo, so for him to do what he wants, he is more than able to, i know i cant do what he can do.

i understand what you mean by wanting to go fast all the time, and for alot of mainstream bands, that is so.

but again, message me about this...

  • not bad for a guy who used to write codes for the patriot missile system ... \m/

  • haha wtf was that at 512?

  • haha

that was me groaning bc of his pure awesomeness

  • ha well thats understandable

  • love it! he is the god of drums.

yeah people Definitely check out some Extreme, they are a good band, he was only on a couple albums I believe, but the albums he was on and the ones before he joined are good, the rest I can do without. Was he on any Steve Vai albums does anyone know?

  • 5:12 xD

  • Thanks a lot for posting. That was awesome

  • Haha. I was sitting way at the back. Looking at the moniter with the foot view.
