I guess the KKK startet after the Civil War as a secret vigilance committee, because the occupation forces did not protect the whites against the explosive increase in crime - rapes, homicides and lootings - committed by the ex-slaves. (even had their own holiday camps).

Freedom for the slaves generally meant new territory for them, a separate state or voluntary deportation or something. Giving them land claimed by others was a recipe for disaster of course like if somebody imported 4 million black people all over the north.

I also have riden all my life, that's why I study our cavalry men. It is true that the sword didn't see alot of use. The most used was the carbine, like 1859 Sharps and the like. Cavalry engagements were very quick.Thats what Forrest was best at . Hit and move, and hit again in another place. When fighting you ride with leg pressure alone, like a reining horse. Revolvers got used in close fights like in the woods.They did have more then one.They were trained to fire left handed but used either.
