@FormerlyMrBean667 Except Zappa forbade his band members from doing drugs on tour to avoid the impact it may have on their performance and to avoid legal entanglements. Frank didn't like drugs much.
Zappa's quote on the introduction of Vinnie , Scott , and Steve into the band , was that he was amazed to have 21 year-olds playing this stuff and that their commitment was stronger than any previous band members. I'm not a Chad fan during his stint but he too was very young. My favorite Bassist was Arthur Barrow. Chester was Zappa's best drummer with Bozzio a close second.
This particular song is about feel once you lock into the timing over the solo (which ,on the vinyl version is staggering)
@mmowoa Im not a big fan of Zappa, I just like the song "keep it greasy". Can you please enlighten me? Im very interested in what has been said. If you dont want to post it here please feel free to send me a PM. I would very much like to hear, in a nutshell, what was said.
During rehearsal for the 81 tour they decided to ask for a sallary raise others in the band needn't know about. Naturally they got quickly replaced with Chad Wackerman and Scott Thunes.

@sweetchildonline I think the only music he ever wrote that he took seriously was the Yellow Shark, just because something isn't serious doesn't mean it cant be brilliant. Frank is probably the greatest joker in the history of rock music, jerk.
On the CD, the drum part on the first verse is 19/16 whilst the rest of the band's playing in 4. Plus the jam at the end is flat out 19 all the way. Unbelievable playing.
To andrewtheman19: I would think that Ivo Papasov (a truly fearsome single-reed player) and his bunch could handle this one with aplomb. Quite capable of rendering jazz-rock, his band was heard to zip through 53/16 in a section of "Kopanitsa", before settling into 5/8, and then fast 11, off of Orpheus Ascending.
I always wondered why I haven't seen any live versions of this w/ the crazy time signature. It grooves well, but isn't quite as unique a song. Vinnie Coliuta (sp?) is an animal on Joe's Garage, some of the best drumming ever.

Incorrect! All players including the vocals are in 19 over 16 on the album in the section you're pointing out. Listen carefully.

Possibly they didn't do it live because Frank always realized that sometimes he asked things of his musicians that they physically could not play.

Yeah I was gonna say...I really wanted to hear them pull out those monster time sigs live.
I'm sure he has at other gigs. I can't imagine such complexity coming easily for ANYONE though...
