    2. Salem, lots of history, not much to say. Old time charm. Can't miss the Witch Museum if you go to Salem.

    3. Portland, Maine. It's a port city, so whale watches are aplenty. MUS eat lobster when paying a visit to anywhere in Maine. Beautiful little city.

    #1. Plymouth Rock

#2. Harvard & MIT (They are 10mins from each other)

#3. Salem Which Trials Tour in Salem MA

I'm sure that there are much better things to see and do but these are some that I've actually done. These are not listed in any order and are not so special to me but they may interest someone not from MA. I chose these because they all are an important part of American History and MA history specifically. Other people can suggest sites from other states. Have Fun!

  • Try visting Mystic, CT. It's a small coast town close to the Rhode Island state line. It's beautiful, and has the BEST seafood. Try the lobster risotto at Bravo Bravo! You can also visit the Mystic Seaport and the Mystic Aquarium. The train ride from Mystic to Boston has the most beautiful scenery! I used to live in Mystic, but I moved to Los Angeles. I still want to go back & visit :)

    Newport, RI Mansions

ps 1/2 hour drive time between FR & Newport

  • Take the US Park Svc guided tour on the Freedom Trail in Boston. Then, shoot up to I-89 to VT. Stop at Ben & Jerry's near Stowe and spend a night in Burlington. Rent a bike and take the bike path along Lake Champlain. Drive across VT, NH, & ME on Rte 2 (drive down Rte 16 in NH to Pinkham Notch to check out Mt. Washington). Work you way to Camden, ME and then head south for a stop in Freeport (LL Bean). Grab a cold beer at the brewery in Portsmouth, NH and then back down to Beantown.

  • 1. Gloucester, MA - amazing beaches/old New England living, PLUS!!!!! FOOD! You have to go to Woodmans! Best seafood around!

  • @efsiiipole Hey thanks Tad! great suggestions. I am adding your recommendations to our list! I am worried that Boston is so big it will hide all of its wonderful history. I think we are taking a tour bus around. I hope they let us get off any buy stuff. and by buy stuff I mean eat stuff.. haha

  • The Museum of Bad Art (MOBA) is very novel (outside of Boston)

The Island of Gloucester, MA is quintessential New England coastal.

The Boston Science Museum is outstanding too (next to MIT)

The architecture on the Yale Campus (New Haven, CT) is full of excellence.

  • @scafativ Wow, great stuff. Janet (wife) just asked me this morning if I thought there would be a great museum in Boston. We both have art backgrounds and I might just have a painting or two that would be considered for the Bad Art museum ha ha.. Thanks

  • 1) Newport RI; must see mansions (the breakers and the marble house), ocean view drive and eat at Quahog Company. Also right down the same road is the Brick Alley Pub.

I use to live there and still make it back at least once a year or more.

  • @mma600psi Now that's what I am talking about! Food that is.. ha ha thanks for the great suggestions and I will checkout the Quahog. I can't pronounce it but I will check it out.. Thanks

  • new york is disgusting, dont waste you time, and if you do LOCK up everything as it will be stolen if not.

  • @dithbmine1 Hey thanks, we will steer clear of the Big Apple..

  • Think it's been over 50 years since I was up that way, and the only thing that stands out in my memory is Mystic Port in CN - though on checking it on Google it looks rather tourist attraction. Still you might find the Sea Museum and such interesting.

  • @FallonBill Hey thanks Bill, we love the off the beaten path stuff, but we enjoy some tourist sites as well. Janet and I enjoyed seeing the Aquarium in Gatlinburg TN. It was surprising and interesting. I did not have high hopes for an aquarium in the mountains. We also loved the Sponge Diving Museum in Tarpon Springs FL... Great suggestion Thanks

  • SO true about the sweet tea & some people thinking a couple of sugar packets will do the trick. These are the same folks who'll swear up & down they do, in fact, have tea... when what they actually have is 'Brisk', 'Nestea' or some other offense along that ilk. (shudder!)

Anyhow, I don't know how long you plan to be in Boston, but the 'Freedom Trail' seems almost obligatory - at least from a 'this is where it all began' standpoint & especially if this might be your only time in the area.

  • @willpaint4paint Thanks for the advice WP4P, we are planning on checking out the Freedom trail. I have been checking the local menus from Boston to Maine, so far it looks pretty good. I may just have to give up sweet tea for awhile. ha

  • What a fun trip!! Is a week enough?!?

I traveled the same area (but took a month) 20+ years ago, Dan. It was a wonderful trip exploring our country's early history. If you're into that sort of thing (and I think you are), I highly recommend visiting Plymouth rock and Plimoth Plantation (a re-creation of the original village of pilgrims), just outside of Boston. Further north is Salem - fascinating to explore where the terrible witch hunts took place.

Happy travels - hope to see some vids!

  • @cookingupastory Thanks Rebbecca, we could use more time. We will be up there poking around about two weeks, so you advice is very valuable. I think Plymouth Rock was on our list, but I am pressing for seeing Salem and really love the history of colonial America. So excited, thanks.

  • do not drink the water ( LOL )

  • @jmg1957 Hey thanks clay pipe man.. We will add that to our list of things NOT to do... ha

    Appreciate the advise

    Dan
