Sobinov's colleagues at the Bolshoi called him the "Nightengale" because of his hauntingly beautiful tenor voice! Sobinov was a singing poet, whose refinement, intelligence (lawyer by training) ,phrasing, gorgeous light timbre, and ability to interpret any role with skill and believability pre- pared him to build and excell in an international career particularly in Italy!
