I used this training myself. I cannot tell from the video, but I myself have it set up and I make sure to position my punch so that I am just able to reach it.. So that it is the speeds snap at the end that breaks the surface of the paper, and not just my fist going past/through it.
I extremely dislike your vids. You don't know shit. Newspaper the way you hit it will rip no matter what as your basically running into it. If that's how u punch your wrong. It should be with your arm like 75 percent extended or so so that speed is necessary no just u basically grabbing it and rippin it off the string
Me and a friend were attempting this on loose leaf paper and it just wouldnt happen. Could you do an instructional video as to the right way to punch when attempting this. We were punching fast and straight with the top two knuckles but no luck :(
you are not doing that quite great , the point that you reach the paper should be about 70-90% of your arm extended , it will be a lot harder to tear the paper but when you do you will see that you become a lot more faster, and i don't recommend to go easy on your self with the news paper thing , get a normal paper sheet and hit the fuck out of it till it tears , going easy on yourself will not bring the results you want
@Johnnyboybravo Technically no. Power(Force) = (speed squard X weight )/ surface area. Which is to say that speed is the most important factor of the equation, but not the only one. So being fast, is the same as being powerful, so long as you have the other factors. Making yourself faster, is easier than making your weight higher or reducing the surface area of your striking point.
@BlackDice572 Power is not speed x weight, but speed x mass. Mass can be 'increased' by good foot, hip and body movement. That's why some people say that the power of a punch come from your footwork. If you move your foot, hip and body good then you don't only gain more mass into your punch, but also more speed.
your doing it wrong. there is a bruce lee dvd with ted wong and richard bustillo that show how this is suppose to be done. you are almost right only your not suppose to hit the paper but move it with the wind from your hand and not newspaper size, 8 1/2x 11 sheet of paper is more the size to use. much harder then what im describing so check it out lol good luck
@KrAzyOaK .haha its only offensive if you take it that way lol.ive actually seen this to.bruce lee did do this'try tao of jeet kune do,or my favorite bruce lee striking thoughts for day living, dats dope.its more phillosiphy
You must try a different that appears in taekwondo encyclopedia: You also hang form the ceiling a sheet of paper, but now, instead of breaking it with a punch you have to move it without touching it, move it just cause of the blow of the punch or the kick. Try it! Its great training for speed and accuracy
good fast punches i didnt try it this way i tryed only holding the paper in my other hand.. but couldnt do it.. but i feel i could didnt try newspaper .. :p
Oh God! You must be very strong [i mean nerd] to cut a paper like that! It's soooo amazing [crap]...Dude please teach me how to do this thing [shit] ! :D
@CrazedForYou lol fuck off hater, its about speed training u fuck, just cos ur not co-ordinated enough to punch properly or fast enough to get through the paper u fag
Although breaking the newspaper is a sign of good speed, it is not the goal of this excercise. Aim to strike it and retract your fist instantly, which without the added stopping support provided by a punching bag or pads increases the "spring-like" properties of your hand, enabling you to set your body for the next strike faster = faster strikes.
Bruce Lee also used the same training method for his kicks, except he used a hanging cloth.

@chichilee - Well, before I tried this I had been practicing various martial arts for about 5-6 years, and then it took about a week of cassuallt practicing this exercise to get to where I was in the video.
A week or so before this though, I was practicing punching out candle flames, which meant I had got alot of practice "snapping" my punches.
The most powerful and useful punches and strikes are the ones done with instantaneous follow through. Most people hear that you have to "punch through' your target. What people *don't* know, is that this is follow through, just like a football throw, etc. The better your follow through, the more scientifically proven range, accuracy and power you have. Punching through something flimsy that can bend, move etc. is actually harder than punching through something stiff.
nichts besonderes. mach das ohne kilometerweit auszuholen. so ein schlag bringt nix und geht sowieso meistens ins leere, es sei denn, dein gegenüber har 2 promille im blut ;-)
The secret to this technique is not in ripping the the whole sheet; but ripping just a fist sized hole where you punched. Like the Pai mei punch on Kill Bill 2. It'll show your energy is more focused, and your punch will be a lot more deadly.
Although it may be plausible that I grabbed it from that camera angle, if you watch closesly you will notice the paper breaks on the way through, not on the way back (as it would if I had just ripped it off).
that is a very good video black dice. I never really thougt about punching paper but i can see how that would increase speed. Me personally i punch candle flames. dont know if youve tried that one yet. But in going to give this a shot. And you are very right a punch is a punch they all incorporate speen and power. Thanks for the vid this is very helpful.
The punches in the video are just simple reverse punches from a back stance, common in most forms of karate or simmilar arts. If the punch was thrown from a higher guard like in Muoy Thai, then it would be, for all practical purposes, the same as a Mouy Thai punch.
I never like to label a technique as belonging to any particular art. At the end of the day, the punch is just a punch, done in a stance with 75% of the weight over the back leg, with a verticle fist.
I learn this from Lee. The idea wasn't to punch the paper physically, just throw your punches quickly allowing the air to blow it away, after getting used to it I set up two at a time and keep them back with the air flow from my punches. Surprisingly effective. I prefer a heavy bag for power.
Well if your not used to it, you will be slow (I was too.)
Really the stopping short is a saftey thing but also for generating maximum power at the beginning and through out, not just the end. (Anyone else want to shim in, I'm enjoying this, but I want to hear other opinions too).
Well if your locking it out it can make it vurerable. Have you seen people throw full on punches and miss and notice there elbow hurt? I've trained to punch vertically at short or long and the stress on the elbow is far less. Give that a try or talk to your sensei. But I'll tell you now if your not used to long/short straight verticals you may be slow but this is easily remedied by practice. What are you practicing?
get your arms stronger. i used to have the same problem if i would shadow box my elbow would feel like i over extended it. just do pushups first then wait a week then your arms will be fast and strong and you wont get that elbow problem
I have a video about exercising specifically for differant aspects of martial arts. It's pretty outdated though. I'll be remaking the whole video in differant sections and in greater depth. If you want the answer sooner, however, feel free to leave me a message in my inbox and I'll get back to you.
Of course, sparring and bag work arn't overridden as base training. This is more an exercise that martial artists should have an "appreciation" of. I think hitting your sparring partner isn't really a practical approach, because you can never hit your partner as hard as you can, and if you did, well.. then you'd injure them.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
your method is flaud. You dont break the paper youre supposed to just tap the paper as quickly as possible without making it move away from you. So have fun tearing paper to everyone who thinks this works....seriously....you cant use this affectively....
I once read for this exercise that your hand should stab the paper as if it is a spear and not tear it. Never tried this though. You think this is feasible? I will really try that back home...
You mean that you might make a clean hole with as little extra tearing as possible? Yes, Im sure it is. I presume you mean in a simmilar way to my first strike on the video, where there is a fist shape hole.
damn bro, you have some intense speed, i have latley been working on power, and from what you say i need to work on speed as well. thanks for the video and inspiration.
Not too weak, just too slow. Keep practicing and you'l get it eventually. Dont be tense, keep really relaxed when you punch.
If you can't relax, then imagine throwing a ball... You relax and just fling your arm in the way you want the ball to go as quickly as you can. Imagine your arm is a whip, completely relaxed and loose until the point of impact.
I have practiced Jeet Kune Do along side friends who do it, but I wouldn't say I really "do" Jeet Kune Do.
I do think this training works to an extent, and I think that all martial artists should get an appreciation for hitting something that yeilds to a punch.
Do I think I am good? Not particularly. I do think however, that if you are going to doubt people over the internet then you could at least post footage to show why you have the right to slander other people's work.
He did, yes. Except that when he did it the purpose of the exercise was slightly differant because he put no emphisis on actually tearing the paper. The purpose behind this is to learn to apply power to your punch with a snap at the end, and to learn to put body weight behind a punch without taking your weight away from your centre of balance. It also helps to learn to hit a person yielding to your punch. Its not sometihng I would practice too much but it its worth getting moderately good at.
When you hit something, like a heavy bag it "resists" your punch. Your power is only transfered into the bag because it can not move away from your punch. Paper, however, is light enough that it doesn't resist at all, it yeilds (moves away) so that very little of your power is transfered to the paper. If you can learn to transfer power into something that yeilds one benefit is that when a person tries to "yeild" ie, move their head away, you will be able to put maximum power into it despite that
dude you are great! im loving your videos!! thanks, i will try it as soon as i can... yesterday i tried the candle... i could haha i have just started with martial arts... i will keep training hard!
Speed is key really. Mass X Speed(Squared), devided by surface area equals Power. So speed is the biggest contributer. If your having trouble, try starting by punching the points of two fingers through the paper instead of your fist. Once your can do that, move onto the tips of all your fingers like a "spearhand" strike. And once you can do that, move back onto the fist. The only other thing I can think of to help is to say not to try and hit the surface of the paper, but to punch "through" it.
Very good mate. I use a4 paper hitched with a paper clip. I usually break it in 10 hits, as it is tougher paper and requires more gusto. You have very good form in your punches, keep up the good work.
Well, there are no limits to the way in training for speed really. Some training methods are just better than others. You can incorperate your speed training into your anaerobic exercises, by simply doing your push ups etc, as fast and with as much power as possible. If you havn't had a look at my principles of training video, take a look. If so, I'll see if there is anything else I can think of for you.
nice, i am at the point of my martial arts training where i need to gain alot more speed, i just spent 2 hours punching out tea lights and my arms and shoulders are really soar so im gunna move on to this meathed tomorow. i may spend another hour on the tea lights tho! it seems to be a cool way of boosting speed! thanks
Motor nuerone recruitment (MFR) only really increases the first couple of weeks of training in a new exercise doesn't it? After that increases in MFR is very slow. Most sources would agree that you should rest the day before any competition/race/whatever you have been training for. I have to say I dont understand all of what you said, I always thought a macro-cycle had something to do with reactions in cyclic compounds in biochemistry. By lactic theshold training you mean endurance training?
A macro cycle is a 12 to 16 week program that has 4 different phases.
One of these phases needs to focus on explosive power if that is what you need for your event. that doesn't mean you stop training hypertrophy, strength, lactic threshold (anaerobic) altogether Its true that u should rest the day before a comp however to give yourself an advantage exercise science tells us that doing that light to moderate explosive power workout will recruit more neurons the folowing day when you need it
Thanks, I dont supose you have any refrences for the extra neurone recruitment idea do you? If so could you send them to me via personal message? PS: Sorry, I have accidentally deleted one of your posts, Youtube really needs an Undo button.
to all fighters... If your looking for exercises to increase explosive strength and power make sure that whatever the exercise you let go of the weight. by hanging on to the weight you will become slower. This is because your antagonist muscles are activating to stop your arm being ripped out of your socket.. you should do no more than 3 sets 5 reps 30%-50% of your 1rm
I have to say, I must dissagree with the last part of your statement. The bit about only doing five reps. You should do at least 20 - 30, my logic being, although you will build muscle and power slower a fight who has a really hard punch that only lasts for five swings is pretty useless, which is what your training yourself for using the minimum reps ideal. You need to train with both strength and endurance in mind, not just one or the other.
I'm currently an amateur junior welter-weight boxer and am looking at increasing my power before I go pro. I like to fight on the inside as I am quite short which means I need to aquire as much power over a short distance as possible. I will give this a go.
You can do the exercise however you like. I imagine the hanger might make it slightly easier, but that doesn't really matter. There are other ways of making the exercise more difficult, like getting thicker paper.
hey thanks for the video, i also have bruce lees book, but didnt really know how to apply the paper punching exercise. I was just wondering is this close to or will it help you with the one inch punch?
Any practice for increasing power will help with power from a short distance. Although for it to really make a differance you could try it from one inch away, so that it is specific. Although, let me say I would be incredibly impressed if you could do it from an inch away. If you manage to do it I would love to see your progress if you are willing to post a video on youtube. I may just try that myself.
Who cares if he thinks your a joke... bottom line all he sees is paper... not skill. He isn't even smart enough to realize that the top half of the paper is staying intact... good method man.
Eventually I am going to be uploading a video on iron palm and general conditioning. The only advise I can give you, is that whatever conditioning/strengthening exercises you do, take it slowly. If you want something to get you going, try push ups on your knuckles and maybe beat one hand against the other lightly. Your hands should never be bruised as a result of your exercises.
I used this training myself. I cannot tell from the video, but I myself have it set up and I make sure to position my punch so that I am just able to reach it.. So that it is the speeds snap at the end that breaks the surface of the paper, and not just my fist going past/through it.

Punching through something flimsy that can bend, move etc. is actually harder than punching through something stiff.

Nice punch dude. Isn't that more Muoy Thai than Wing Tsun?
Lukeacoustic 2 years ago
The punches in the video are just simple reverse punches from a back stance, common in most forms of karate or simmilar arts. If the punch was thrown from a higher guard like in Muoy Thai, then it would be, for all practical purposes, the same as a Mouy Thai punch.
I never like to label a technique as belonging to any particular art. At the end of the day, the punch is just a punch, done in a stance with 75% of the weight over the back leg, with a verticle fist.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
i don't understand. how does it increase speed and power ?it's just like a challenge .
yourmumflyhigh 2 years ago
I learn this from Lee. The idea wasn't to punch the paper physically, just throw your punches quickly allowing the air to blow it away, after getting used to it I set up two at a time and keep them back with the air flow from my punches. Surprisingly effective. I prefer a heavy bag for power.
warriorfire8103 2 years ago
oooooooh
so you gotta punch near it instead of through it right
and just see how your speed increases
but i have a question
when i punch fast, my elbow joints make a little snapping noise
how can i stop this?
ps3istheshit2 2 years ago
Well are you extending completely? I don't cause I fear the damage to elbows.
warriorfire8103 2 years ago
hmm...
i think i have a bad punch then
because its a slow punch for me to not extend all the way
and isn't the point of a punch supposed to go far with great power?
ps3istheshit2 2 years ago
Well if your not used to it, you will be slow (I was too.)
Really the stopping short is a saftey thing but also for generating maximum power at the beginning and through out, not just the end. (Anyone else want to shim in, I'm enjoying this, but I want to hear other opinions too).
warriorfire8103 2 years ago
i have the same problem of my elbows clicking when im training should i just not extend fully?
XzmazX 2 years ago
Well if your locking it out it can make it vurerable. Have you seen people throw full on punches and miss and notice there elbow hurt? I've trained to punch vertically at short or long and the stress on the elbow is far less. Give that a try or talk to your sensei. But I'll tell you now if your not used to long/short straight verticals you may be slow but this is easily remedied by practice. What are you practicing?
warriorfire8103 2 years ago
get your arms stronger. i used to have the same problem if i would shadow box my elbow would feel like i over extended it. just do pushups first then wait a week then your arms will be fast and strong and you wont get that elbow problem
gatoralley01 2 years ago
It hurts cause your not punching properly the snap comes from your shoulder and wrist.

neodreamin 2 years ago
I have a video about exercising specifically for differant aspects of martial arts. It's pretty outdated though. I'll be remaking the whole video in differant sections and in greater depth. If you want the answer sooner, however, feel free to leave me a message in my inbox and I'll get back to you.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
Why would you ask paper punchy guy?
melbournaut 2 years ago
it's a cool training trick, but isn't it better to spar and ask your sparring partner "did it hurt ? "
system0Fhonor 2 years ago
Of course, sparring and bag work arn't overridden as base training. This is more an exercise that martial artists should have an "appreciation" of. I think hitting your sparring partner isn't really a practical approach, because you can never hit your partner as hard as you can, and if you did, well.. then you'd injure them.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
i'd say its where u hit the paper not how u hit it. but then again i'm not about to try this cuz i like grappling more

your method is flaud. You dont break the paper youre supposed to just tap the paper as quickly as possible without making it move away from you. So have fun tearing paper to everyone who thinks this works....seriously....you cant use this affectively....
AceCrosser 2 years ago
I once read for this exercise that your hand should stab the paper as if it is a spear and not tear it. Never tried this though. You think this is feasible? I will really try that back home...
FanatikosKafetzis 2 years ago
You mean that you might make a clean hole with as little extra tearing as possible? Yes, Im sure it is. I presume you mean in a simmilar way to my first strike on the video, where there is a fist shape hole.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
I can do the first strike on one string, but it was a tear rather than a pierce. I'm now trying smaller pieces. No luck so far, I'm afraid.
ADevilInTheDark 2 years ago
damn bro, you have some intense speed, i have latley been working on power, and from what you say i need to work on speed as well. thanks for the video and inspiration.
z2pl123 2 years ago
how long did u practise to do that? btw i tried to do it my newspaper flew away ...hm im too weak or too slow...
sweetStickman 2 years ago
Not too weak, just too slow. Keep practicing and you'l get it eventually. Dont be tense, keep really relaxed when you punch.
If you can't relax, then imagine throwing a ball... You relax and just fling your arm in the way you want the ball to go as quickly as you can. Imagine your arm is a whip, completely relaxed and loose until the point of impact.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
hm...sounds good...hm i think i'll try it again^^ thank u
sweetStickman 2 years ago
I don't quite understand how this improves speed or power ? I mean it's just a bit of paper isn't it.
Why not just pound a heavy bag
KLguy133 2 years ago
Basically, speed is the biggest component of power, and it requires alot of speed to puncture the paper without it just moving away from you.
There is a little more to it than that, but too much to explain over one message.
Don't take my word for it though. Give it a try, you may find it more difficult than it looks.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
hey do you do jeet kune do and does this training really work
RyanAussie09 2 years ago
I have practiced Jeet Kune Do along side friends who do it, but I wouldn't say I really "do" Jeet Kune Do.
I do think this training works to an extent, and I think that all martial artists should get an appreciation for hitting something that yeilds to a punch.

BlackDice572 2 years ago
did bruce lee really use this ?????
246807 2 years ago
He did, yes. Except that when he did it the purpose of the exercise was slightly differant because he put no emphisis on actually tearing the paper. The purpose behind this is to learn to apply power to your punch with a snap at the end, and to learn to put body weight behind a punch without taking your weight away from your centre of balance. It also helps to learn to hit a person yielding to your punch. Its not sometihng I would practice too much but it its worth getting moderately good at.
BlackDice572 2 years ago
NICE 5 STARS. Take a look at my speed tracker video Ithink you will like it.
zankwack 3 years ago
I just used a small amount of masking tape.
BlackDice572 3 years ago
how does this help in power and speed plz explain
Bonespirit07 3 years ago
When you hit something, like a heavy bag it "resists" your punch. Your power is only transfered into the bag because it can not move away from your punch. Paper, however, is light enough that it doesn't resist at all, it yeilds (moves away) so that very little of your power is transfered to the paper. If you can learn to transfer power into something that yeilds one benefit is that when a person tries to "yeild" ie, move their head away, you will be able to put maximum power into it despite that
BlackDice572 3 years ago
There are a few more reasons but it would take alot of explaining. If your still interested, send me a private message over youtube and I'll explain.

i can do the candles (up to 3)

BUT I CAN'T DO THIS ON ONE STRING!!!... any sugestions?
ZevN47 3 years ago
Speed is key really. Mass X Speed(Squared), devided by surface area equals Power. So speed is the biggest contributer. If your having trouble, try starting by punching the points of two fingers through the paper instead of your fist. Once your can do that, move onto the tips of all your fingers like a "spearhand" strike. And once you can do that, move back onto the fist. The only other thing I can think of to help is to say not to try and hit the surface of the paper, but to punch "through" it.
BlackDice572 3 years ago
Very good mate. I use a4 paper hitched with a paper clip. I usually break it in 10 hits, as it is tougher paper and requires more gusto. You have very good form in your punches, keep up the good work.

do you have anymore training tups for increaseing my punching speed?
ghetto013 3 years ago
Well, there are no limits to the way in training for speed really. Some training methods are just better than others. You can incorperate your speed training into your anaerobic exercises, by simply doing your push ups etc, as fast and with as much power as possible. If you havn't had a look at my principles of training video, take a look. If so, I'll see if there is anything else I can think of for you.
BlackDice572 3 years ago

Reizo12 3 years ago
Motor nuerone recruitment (MFR) only really increases the first couple of weeks of training in a new exercise doesn't it? After that increases in MFR is very slow. Most sources would agree that you should rest the day before any competition/race/whatever you have been training for. I have to say I dont understand all of what you said, I always thought a macro-cycle had something to do with reactions in cyclic compounds in biochemistry. By lactic theshold training you mean endurance training?
BlackDice572 3 years ago
A macro cycle is a 12 to 16 week program that has 4 different phases.
One of these phases needs to focus on explosive power if that is what you need for your event. that doesn't mean you stop training hypertrophy, strength, lactic threshold (anaerobic) altogether Its true that u should rest the day before a comp however to give yourself an advantage exercise science tells us that doing that light to moderate explosive power workout will recruit more neurons the folowing day when you need it
JimmyAust 3 years ago
Thanks, I dont supose you have any refrences for the extra neurone recruitment idea do you? If so could you send them to me via personal message? PS: Sorry, I have accidentally deleted one of your posts, Youtube really needs an Undo button.
BlackDice572 3 years ago
to all fighters...
JimmyAust 3 years ago
I have to say, I must dissagree with the last part of your statement. The bit about only doing five reps. You should do at least 20 - 30, my logic being, although you will build muscle and power slower a fight who has a really hard punch that only lasts for five swings is pretty useless, which is what your training yourself for using the minimum reps ideal. You need to train with both strength and endurance in mind, not just one or the other.
BlackDice572 3 years ago
why the camera moves when he hit the paper? i think thats a treak
tutayta 3 years ago
I'm currently an amateur junior welter-weight boxer and am looking at increasing my power before I go pro. I like to fight on the inside as I am quite short which means I need to aquire as much power over a short distance as possible. I will give this a go.
igdpk 3 years ago
Will it be okay if I tape the paper to a hanger or do I have to use string?
OuterHeavenX 3 years ago
You can do the exercise however you like. I imagine the hanger might make it slightly easier, but that doesn't really matter. There are other ways of making the exercise more difficult, like getting thicker paper.
BlackDice572 3 years ago
Thanks for the info.
OuterHeavenX 3 years ago
hey thanks for the video, i also have bruce lees book, but didnt really know how to apply the paper punching exercise. I was just wondering is this close to or will it help you with the one inch punch?
fishimon 3 years ago
Any practice for increasing power will help with power from a short distance. Although for it to really make a differance you could try it from one inch away, so that it is specific. Although, let me say I would be incredibly impressed if you could do it from an inch away. If you manage to do it I would love to see your progress if you are willing to post a video on youtube. I may just try that myself.

any exercises for strengthening ur knuckles?
dhyleck 4 years ago
Eventually I am going to be uploading a video on iron palm and general conditioning. The only advise I can give you, is that whatever conditioning/strengthening exercises you do, take it slowly. If you want something to get you going, try push ups on your knuckles and maybe beat one hand against the other lightly. Your hands should never be bruised as a result of your exercises.
