It's a complete sham. All Vail's doing with this is charting your chairlift rides, so it's actually how many vertical feet you rode up the chairlift, not skied down the hill. What happens if you hike? The system won't calculate that. What happens if your buddy rides up a lift and skis down to the bottom and is chillin' in the bar? The system still says he's on the mountain b/c he rode a lift. It's a phony attempt to capture visitors' data. Vail's in the database business, not ski business.
Its pretty damn close. You wont skii that much further horizontal than you will vertical. Its a new system im sure more features will be added later on. How can you say Vail is not in the ski business but the data base? lol theyre using the data not only to increase the ski experience but to also have the data needed to open up more lifts in the national forest which is a long and hard process. Personally i think its a great idea regardless of what it doesnt feature at the moment.
Quite happy that VAIL MOUNTAIN (Rob Katz, Robert Urwiler, Kelly Ladyga) finally launched the 1st iPhone app for their skiers and 'adopted' some of my ideas (verbatim!) I outlined in March 2010 on my blog.
there is no way Id ever use this...riding is about getting away from technology and into nature, not bringing that crap with you. And to be tracked on every slope??...uh no thanks big brother...this garbage is for rookies.
@TheTahoeBlue , Think about 20 years ago you can't even watch a video and make a comment like this on the internet, technology involves our life style and sometimes it makes more fun! you might have to walk up to a mountain for skiing or snowboarding if we life without technology! that would be painful!
