  • I was told that Ian took his gold and platinum records and put them in a pile and burned them. This cat is about art, recognizing the struggles of those without a voice, speaking his truth and doing what the f^ck he wants. Love that guy.

  • god i love this song

  • cocaine's a helluva drug Ian but damn still talented as a mofo dancing like that and singing.

  • Like watching porn

  • TAPATAPATAPATAPA.... so easy this music, but so high energy!! amazing!!

  • A cross between early U2 and early Aerosmith!

  • beautiful start, they should have kept that atmosphere, fitter to the song. @00.49 the advertised bar an all make it all lokk like a circus...

  • Great , kick ass, rockin tune !!!!!

  • @badbritney and punkoid, I was 20 in 1985 living in NYC being a Gothic punk rock tart, hanging out at Danceteria & getting into all kinds of trouble in the City's seedy underbellies, lol. I *wish* I'd seen The Cult live. I was all into Echo & the Bunnymen at the time, though. I remember following Ian McCollough around an after-hours place called Berlin b/c I was so obsessed w/ him. Look me up on Facebook at /hillary.hays if you want to talk :)

  • Under-rated! Let it not be said Bradford never produced a good band!

  • i think axl rose copied a lot of ian astbury's moves...

  • RIVERSIDE ?

  • Oh my god, thank you so much for posting this. i was there at this show,14 those were the days great bands erasure, oingo boingo, the cult. thanks again great memories. cheers to you ..

  • I would think that when bands like U2 and the like from the 80's heard she sells sanctuary they thought....damn thats a top tune...why can't we do that...

  • Timelessssss

  • pure pro muciscians..... doesn't happen often..

  • if a band is big it doesn't mean it makes bad music...

  • @ nolayankee, U2 are probably one of the most over rated bands ever, along with Kiss, Queen, Oasis and Bon Jovi, all of which (well, Queen have a handicap) could still fill stadiums, but so what? That doesn't make their music "great". The Cult are more like The Sex Pistols, The Stone Roses and The Strokes, all of which are under rated by the general public, but people that know their stuff think otherwise.

  • @punkoid76 Yeah, bro...you put it very well....all the bands you mentioned are truly overrated, U2 had a great start but somehow they lost somewhere in the road after 1988....that said The Cult made 1985 one of the best years of my life, it was exactly the kind of music that l needed back then... along with Joy Division, Siouxsie and The Cure...

  • Happy Birthday Ian!

  • why is u2 still around, the cult was great in the 80's which is what i was a part of but the difference is u2 is still revenant. that is what separates the greats for a great period. I love the cult but they could't fill my house. Where as u2 it's hard to get a ticket to a show. Next

  • @nolayankee1 The Cult is very relevant still, they cant fill youre house?do you live in wembley stadium?the Cult are still filling up theaters around Europe and Us,they never were a big stadium band like U2 in the first place, thats the diference

  • @nolayankee1 Fuck U2, fuck Bono, for them it's all about the money. Long live the Cult! :P

  • How in all that is good. Do Kean have twice as many hits for "She sells Sanctuary" for gods sake?. jeze!

  • duffy has go to be one of the most underrated guitarists ever

    fucking brilliant

  • @deanogolfer at this times ... is so fucking easy be underrated!

  • @deanogolfer For some reason the Guitar world doesnt acknowledge Billy Duffy or Johnny Marr. Probably cos they dont shred?

  • they sure dont make them like this anymore...what sound, what a front man, he is up there with the great ones a true living legend.

  • I was at this show and it was amazing, outside it was snowing and freezing and inside it was 100 degrees

  • I was at this show and it was amazing!

  • I believe the line-up on this performance is Ian Astbury,Billy Duffy,Jamie Stewart and Les Warner. Although Nigel Preston originally was on drums in the studio for the recording, he was replaced by Mark Brzezicki for the video. Les Warner then was hired as drummer for live performances in 1985 including this one on December 6th at The Ritz and later that month on December 21st they played on Saturday Night Live.

  • I walked by The Ritz (now Webster Hall) in NYC the other day, while listening to this on my iPod. Pretty DAMN good feeling!!! Miss this type of music.

  • Energy!!!

  • So great..before they went all 'metal'.

  • I feel sorry for the band that has to follow this act.

  • These guys fucking rock

  • excellent....

  • Remember the great Toronto show that year... Did a lot more head moving when he was feeling into it..

A little too coked up on this one I'm thinkin', a bit rushed :')

  • essa musica e muito doida!!!

  • Greatest song ever... This a very pure and early version... Like it a lot!!! Heard this song on radio in 1985, been a hardcore Cult fan ever since. CFFC.

  • nothing beats 'live at the lyceum'

  • that lead singer could make me turn gay.

  • @kingorbit1 LOL~!

I just saw then last week. He's 48 now & I'd still do him!

  • @WENCHY101 yeahhh me toooo..he will be always beautifulll

  • @angey8 I know! He looked sooo good last month! Mmmmmmm mmmmm mmmmm. He sounded GREAT too! :)

  • @WENCHY101 you saw him last month???? godd your the luckyest...i would love to see him in real,,before i die..no for realll..in wich country do you live? i live in holland...so i dont know if they will ever show up here...if they do i will do everything i can to go see him...he is really the man of this century...thanks for answer me wenchy...very kinde of you...

  • @angey8 Yes, I saw them last month. I've seen The Cult 3 times. All were Great shows. I'm in the U.S. of A. for now. I hope you get to see them :)

  • @WENCHY101 oo by the way....he looks here like goddddd...hhaahhahaha

  • @angey8 Oh he sure does! Yummmmmmmmm :)

  • grow the hair back Ian!!! ;)

  • @evictingfaith It's getting long again :)

  • Can you imagine how hard it would be to sustain that bass through an entire set?

    Hats off to Jamie!

  • ESTA CANCION ERA UN HIMNO EN TODOS LOS TONOS DARK DE LIMA CADA VEZ K SONABA TODOS BUSCABAN SUS PAREJAS PARA BAILAR Y SINO BAILABAN SOLO CON LA SOMBRA K BUENOS TIMES!!

  • I don't know why Ian and co so rarely pulled off better live shows. The man can sing but you wouldn't know it by so many of his perfomances.

  • If I can't have his hair, I want his PANTS!

  • @twasbrillig33 I was watching some interview & he said he didn't even remember those pants. He kind of was like ack- those pants! LOL

  • @twasbrillig33 Oh my!

  • theres like 4 words to this whole lyric arrangrment.. Noiz=ZION

  • saw them at aylesbury civic hall early 90's billy duffy is amazing!! classic song

  • I agree MightyScenester. NO CONTEST!!!!

  • I had this entire show on VHS. Someone stole it!! Bastards!

  • Saw them last night (5/5/2010) in Brisbane........... older...........a bit larger.............but absolute Rock Gods!!! Astbury sounded the same and Duffy was amazing!!!! My ears are still ringing!!

  • @TheRyno34 Awesome Im so jealous..

    CFFC

  • the Ritz in Austin?

  • Yep we 'have noticed' and after 15 years they are back! 'The Cult' are on tour in Oz! They are here in Sinny on Thursday, 6th May at the Big Top at Luna Park! :-R

  • So sad the times goose bye and no one notis this great big band!

  • Billy Duffy!!!

  • I was born in 1985, and this song kicks ass

  • great style and great band no wonder! terrible singing Ian did though!

  • Yaayaw! C.F.F.C.

  • chooooon

  • earth culture rules!!!!

  • Its only bands like the CULT and EARTH CULTURE that kick ass

  • best song of the decade, period

  • Excuse me, does anyone have a tissue? hehe, I'm drooling more over Ian Ashbury now than I did in the 80s...sigh

  • these guys had great style, too. and yes, i'm talking about their clothes.

  • 5 stars for Ian he is off his nut!

  • Ian was only 23...

  • Hell... we were all only 23

  • NYC 1985. 'nuff said

  • Comment removed

  • Was my FAVORITE band in the 80s!

  • mine to , this takes me back

  • lp32862, TOTALLY agree w/ you. Would have given anything to have lived in NYC in 1980s!

  • It's all about Billy Duffy

  • This concert is legendary at the Ritz as well as the time Guns and Roses played there. The Ritz casts a spell on the performers.

  • yes indeed.

  • this is it.

  • Better band than U2 could ever dream to be.

  • @MightyScenester DAMN STRAIGHT!!!!

  • @MightyScenester How could they be greater? So obviously influenced by them.

  • @ausgang I'd rather say that both bands were heavily influenced by Joy Division or maybe even King Crimson for guitar textures, as a lot of bands had a similar guitar sound in the early eighties. The Cult were inspired by the Doors, the Stooges and cool stuff, while U2 were inspired by their own wimpiness.

  • @MightyScenester ..."Rock 'n' roll now is pretty much in the garbage. It's barely alive. Everybody has taken from it. Nobody has given back. There are a very few who have given back. It's a very selfish occupation. A lot of people never really returned. That's why we have a lot of pastiche and we have a lot of artists who are never involved beyond their sophomore albums. It's a travesty."

    Ian Astbury

  • @MightyScenester Agreed. Bono is such a douche bag piece of shit. :-)

  • @MightyScenester HELL YEAH I WISH I HAD 1000 THUMBS FOR THAT COMMENT u2 is for gays..

  • @MightyScenester thank you so much for saying this:)))))

totally made my day,the cult rocks and u2 sucks big time...

  • @MightyScenester

i don't think so but they were a very good band

  • @MightyScenester True!!!!

  • @MightyScenester the Cult are good ... i saw them about 4 months ago, but that statement is a reach.. U2 are probably the best performance band in the world now, esp. in big concerts,, their live work is better than their studio stuff, which is VERY hard for most bands

    to do

  • @dogsofwar007 I can't stand U2.

  • I was there at this show. Amazing. They rocked. We were suburban kids who were a bit out of our element. The crowd back then was as much of a show as the band. NYC has lost some of its edge. Such is life. I live three blocks now from that venue with a very different life.

  • when did matt sorum play in cult

  • The Ritz in NYC - 254 W54th St in Manhattan. Many fantastic shows I went to at that place!

  • nope

this was before that. when the ritz was on 11th st. same space as webster hall is now

  • OMG...i didn't hear this in so long.....!!!

  • i LOVE the cult

    principally Ian Astbury

  • One of my favorite songs

  • One of my favorite bands of all time!!!

  • one of the favorite times of my life

  • mamma mia che bei ricordi e quanta tristezza..ma com'era favoloso ian all'epoca?

pochi altro hanno avuto il suo carisma e la sua carica sexi!!!! i love ian prima ora e per sempre kissssssssssssssssss....

  • He seems so wasted in this video but damn the boys rock, great video. Cheers

  • I think the drummer looks more wasted :P

  • Ian Astbury in the 80's and 90'S? WAY TOO HOT, i'm sure i had an orgasm the first time I saw the clip for wildflower

  • Comment removed

  • Singer?

  • The best band ever! And the hottest singer ever :-)

    They way he moves, wow...

  • The Cult were, are, and always will be my favourite band. They have, are and always will make great music. Agreed, the Love era 'look' was what turned me onto them. As a 15 year old in 2005 when I bought Love because I'd heard SSS on GTA Vice City, staring at these 4 guys thinking holy shit, my life is complete!

As soon as I saw Billy and Jamie and Ian and was like 'thats what I want to look like, thats it!'

  • Remember waiting for hours and hours to get into The Ritz because it was general admission only? Man! I waited for sooo many shows there! Great memories!

  • OMG I was at that show, up front of course! The Ritz was a GREAT venue!

  • Are you referring to the Ritz in Detroit Michigan, If so Im in town too, good stuff.

  • men he can really dance and move...unique

  • I was there!!!! I still have my ticket stub!!

  • @RubyTwilite lucky, very lucky. I watched this on TV when I was 14 and changed my life.

  • @RubyTwilite Lucky...

  • @RubyTwilite SO DO I..

  • @RubyTwilite I STILL MY TICKET STUB THE RITZ 11th street N.Y.C.

  • @RubyTwilite. Looks like it was a HELL of a show! How cool you can say that.

  • I wish Ian would stick mostly to the regular lyric lines instead of the off beat fill in's. I know it's live, but he leaves alot out of his live stuff vs. studio. They all still rock though!!

  • Hey, who the hell is on drums? Ah, Preston was left in Europe, now we understand why this version sounds like Motely Crue´s "looks that kill".... chit happens mate!!!!

  • What a great guitar intro: BILLY IS THE MAN!!!

  • Ian....Billy....Jamie....Les.....THE CULT AT THEIR BEST!!!

    THAT'S the classic lineup!!!!

  • He seems like a bastard brother of Rod Stewart

  • Comment removed

  • might be mistaken.. but if u go watch live Guns and Roses off Use Your Illusion tour you'll see this drummer more lol..

  • Flyting high, Ian, Flying high

  • whos the drummeR?

  • Les Warner

  • Yeah they were great! and guess what? i got a tambourine that Ian sent right out to the crowd, how cool is that?! enjoy this amizing song friends

  • I saw theese guys yesterday on the Sonisphere Festival. They fucking rocked man, perfect warm up for the upcoming Metallica gig an hour after ;)

  • Amazing. In the top 100 of greatest songs ever written -- EVER written.

  • awesome!! brought back memories :)

  • Oh man! I was ALWAYS at the Ritz seeing some band, we'd wait outside all day to get up front (gen. admit)! Ah! Those were the days! Anyone remember The Big Kahuna?

  • the Ritz in Manchester?

  • Mamma mia!!!Che potenza!!!

  • The Drummmer is incrediable!

  • Agree 84-85 was their best period. SUCH ENERGY! Rain was the follow up - mad hippy girls on backing duties. Saw Ian Astbury for the Doors @ Wwhat was the Point in Dublin few years back. The perfect replacement for Jimbo, R.I.P.

  • Awesome music, heinous hairstyles...

  • Fair to say Ian seems to be having a psychadelic experience here.

  • YESSSSSSSSSS, i saw that too, HAHAH xD

  • Billy Dufffffffffffffffffffffy!!

  • i was there that night it was not long after my 24th birthday!

Good old days drugged up to fuck and cruising man!

  • This song is in my top 5 all time. I remember them playing SNL fall of '85 - the other video that is up here on You Tube. I was hooked then. After '85 yeah they changed but Sonic Temple had its moments and liked most of Electric. The Cult became the Chameleon of Rock N' Roll of the late 80s and 90s and I refuse to see them as sell outs. But this was their best music 84-85 time period.

  • I was at this ...be nice and just ...BOOGIE!

  • Drugs..

  • Back in the 80's My ex girlfriend who by the way was a crazy cult fan, was madly in love with Ian.

funny thing though, I was not jealous........... I mean look at him...... his poise, the voice and all of his talent.

    they are Unique.

  • Did you occasionally sneak in a wank over Ian too? I mean, you're only human, right?

  • Yes he did it but over your mother. Really you're a mental retarded.....

  • Danny - I was, okay am, in love with Ian, and "back in the day" my boyfriend was cool with it too. Ian was one of my "freebees" like, if i ever got the chance to.......my guy would of had to be cool. Ian is the kind of guy girls want to be with and guys want to be! Which doesn't happen all that often

  • Ian is wasted. What a voice though!

I'm sure the audience didn't notice. WHAT A FU+CKIN GREAT SONG!

  • Good song. And when the crowd jumps it must be an ultimate rush to have the whole crowd tuned in. I've seen some AC/DC and Iron Maiden shows, like at Donnington, when the whole crowd jumps in unison to their favorite song. That must be the ulimate rush for the artist.

  • I'm naming my firstborn after Ian! i luv Ian!

  • The reason hes singing like that is because hes been singing for a long time in that concert and you know singing takes alot out of u epecially if ur moving around like him

  • yeah and he doesn't even sound bad though.

  • The vocals are really phoned in. It's like he isn't even trying...

  • at the risk of sounding stupid, what does phoned in mean?

  • Just an expression, as if he didn't bother to show up in person but "phoned" it in. (as in telephone)

I'm actually a big fan of The Cult, I guess I don't care much for their live shows though. :(

  • oh. he looks tired here. i don't necessarily think they sound bad tho. but you should look at their earlier live shows on youtube. they play the songs 10 times better than the recorded versions.

  • his dance moves ..... wow and nice hair

  • Ready,Set,Go

  • he is stoned as hell....

  • well if your sheep died who would you be able to shag. GOOD SONG

  • Was this The Ritz in Manchester? I was destroyed when The Cult brought out Love Removal Machine. Going from the beautiful lyrics in the Love album to that crap. I blame Duffy a bit for that. He really embraced it. Some genius has also put Dreamtime live at the lyceum on Itunes too. Now that was a gig.

  • @ Disciplinatrix : It's The Ritz in New York. MTV filmed and broadcast a lot of gigs here--IIRC it's now called Webster Hall.

  • Ian always used to ramble through the lyrics as seen here. Its fucking annoying but you can imagine how many times he sang this one.still an awesome song..
