  • is there anywhere you can watch the movie?

  • namesake is a really good movie

  • He's quite insightful.

  • he has got a good personality.

  • wow i really like his personality. and he can always make me smileeeee =)

  • The interesting thing about him is, his name is Kalpen Modi... first name pronounced cull-pane... very nerdy sounding name :P. And he managed to make it into Kal Penn which sound scooler as well as reflects his UPenn affiliation.

  • He changed his name to be able to fit into the 'White' world.

  • Kal is the best. :) Intelligent, attractive, and hilarious. He's my favourite, ever.

  • I second that comment!

  • J.S.A.? lol

  • does anybody know when this movie comes out?

  • You mean 'The Namesake'? It came out last year.

  • it's actually on video already, I rented it over the Christmas holiday.

  • wtf kumar is fucking smart lol

  • cenolover = i know right?... he's amazing.

  • I think Kal Penn is great...he is breaking down all the stereotypes of Indian-Americans! He is a funny, talented AMERICAN who just happens to have Indian ancestry.

  • Obviously the movie isn't just about identity politics. However, The Namesake clearly deals with this issue. And nobody is saying you should make identity rule you but you shouldn't ignore it either. Race matters in the real world always has and always will.

  • haha cause of kal i get called kumar now lol.

because of harold and kumar indians arent drawn apon as jus fresh indians, but that some of us actually dont have accents and are more white than indian LOL

  • 1:04: It was Lydia (the mother of Gogol/Nick's girlfriend, Maxine) who introduced G/N as "the young Indian architect" to her friend. It was understandable that the friend assumed he was from India.

  • I gotta watch this movie if Kal Recimends it im watching it

  • As a non-Indian, I enjoyed WTPY because it's funny and hip. I am from a 1st generation immigrant background, so I could see the humor applied to my experiences.

  • Tabu and Irfan Khan are the highlights of namesake... not penn

  • The kind of thoughtfullness you wouldn't expect to hear from Kumar

  • Penn's comment about identity films reminds me of movies about interracial/mixed relationships. Why can't they just portray a mixed couple without the film being ***about a mixed couple***, if that makes sense.

  • I disagree with Kal here there is nothing wrong with films dealing with identity. Also the Namesake is clearly a film that deals with this issue. I just think maybe Kal is tired of the media asking him questions about "identity" but that's all a part of the Hollywood.

  • He's not saying there's anything wrong with films about identity. He's saying that Asian-American film-makers need to think outside that approach. That they should get away from "ethnicity" as what defines a person and get to "personality" as what defines you.

His point was too subtle for the masses of idiots who watch his interviews, so he should work on dumbing his points down to get the most mass appeal.

  • Cute talented and smart. Me likey.

  • ok i didnt quiet understand that last part [because of big words lol] but i agree people are racist towards indians ,and people from pakistan and iraq and that part of the world ,because a few sadistic bastards from that area attacked america. and kal penn had a role in 24 as a terrorist and tats not fare that they hav an indian person to act it why couldent they just hire a white person ,it just goes to show racist people are i feel sorry for kal penn ,ps i luv him lol

  • i agree, i hate how media portrays all terrorist to look INDIAN, i mean terrorists come in all races and skin colors!

  • aww baby, i dont mind wer ur frm ur to sxc to let tat get in the way lol

  • aww i luv kal!

  • hey they writed the word in bengali in this movie....

  • I believe the correct term is 'wrote'.

  • your ethnicity shapens your personality especially if you have lived with with people from that ethnic group during the early part of your life.

  • what's wrong with asking "where are you from?" I was born here, but I like talking about my heritage.

  • I completely agree with you! Maybe people are asking because they have an interest in the person's background, what's wrong with that?! I wish I was from some place interesting so people could ask me! I don't think I like this Kal Penn guy!

  • thts coz ur paki.

  • Ha ha! I'm not Paki at all! Ha ha ha!!!!

  • Yeah right.

  • MAKE LOVE NOT WAR!

  • Yeah right,

  • If I was, I'd say! You must be too narrow-minded to be interested in a culture different from your own.

  • he is a great actor!!!

  • Well, I think he's friggin' awesome and a friggin' fantastic actor! And i should know, I'm a professional casting director slash wine connoisseur.

  • why he is ashemed of as an indian. and about acting, if you see this movie, the namesake', he s the worst actor. he talks like he has cold.

  • Identity movie are not bad and everybody CAN relate, because we all have different identiites and identity conflicts but his stereotyped roles probably don't help and he probably shouldn't choose them in the first place.

  • I love Kal's comments about THE NAMESAKE. It's a fantastic film, by the way. He did a great job!

  • This guy's a class act. It's so frustrating to be asked wherever you go, "Where are you from?" It is demeaning and segregating. The guy's got millions probably, props to him, but it must be such an uphill struggle to be in such a race-image conscious industry. The guy speaks better English than 99% of people his age, and I can understand his frustrations.

  • It's only demeaning and segregating if you take it that way.

  • Listen skidmark...m not free to respond to every single shithead here. so buzz off. and u r a porki, its evident. again i dont care who u r, just dont kiss my ass again and again.

  • Finally a role he deserves. Asian actors-Asian American actors are deeply underused and unemployed.

  • So, its not up to ethinc groups to mold their stories to appeal to the white american male, its up to the white american male to show appreciation for these stories. like kal said he is able to relate to holden even though his character is white, so why can't a white person relate to a ethnic character if he's ethnic

  • yes he is an american actor but we cannot just say oh he is indian too. b.c than we are saying race doesn't matter, and lets face it in america race def. matters. it is imp. for desi actors to see kal as an indian american actor b.c lets face there isn't a lot of south asians in hollywood. Im not saying he should be singled out for his race, but its imp. to see his struggle as an indian american trying to get imp. roles in hollywood, which will only cast him in steretypical roles.

  • I pretty much cried like a bitch when I watched this film.

    It was that good.

  • the interviewer is hot. does anybody know his name?

  • What's with the way they are dressed ? They both seem like they dressed weird on purpose ?

  • He was fantastic as Gogol in "The Namesake"..just saw it today.

  • Why is he an actor?

    He's not good looking

  • wttfff! you homo rainbow. he sexy. dont hate. he can act, too. fucking retard. hes so hot he makes my computer melt. fucking homo.

  • KAL PEN is odd. He used ethnicity when it was convenient.

Does this mean he won't appear at any more Ethnic Film Festivals with boring "Ethnic Films?"

  • So what KAL is saying is that ethnic identity should be used to get into the business and then it should be quickly discredited and labeled "boring" once an actor with lots of personality gets attention outside the audience for "ASIAN PACIFIC ARTS" or an ASIAN FILM FESTIVAL.

Should the ethnic audiences stay away from this film.

I am curious, what ethnicity is KAL now?

  • Why does everybody have to say "Its American, Its Universal" when America is part of the Universe ??

  • Great interview!

  • kal penn is sooo well educated....i mean he has it all....character personality, disipline, humor , looks, great vocabulary and acting ability!!! this guy rocks!!

  • I loved what Penn had to say about moving away from ethnic identity and focusing on personality.
