It's all about the wind... Fred bear (Greatest Bowhunter in the World) never used scents or camo clothing, let alone charcoal clothing and he never had a problem getting any north american animal. Think about that...
My Dad killed a mule deer with a bow every year from the time he switched from a recurve bow to a compound and he smoked. When he quit smoking he went 3yrs without killing a deer. LOL
It's really according to where u hunt. I hunt in the woods of Eastern, Kentucky, where there are ridges, benches and hollows. The majority of the time one will need to hunt between two benches or between the ridge and a bench because several trails surround the hunter. In this type of hunting environment it is best to be as scent free as possible because you never know where the deer will come from.
It's not so much the cigarette smoke or human scent that makes deer Leary, rather it's the aftershave, scented underarm deodorants & shampoos. I would never encourage anyone to waste money on cover up scents when all you need do is use unscented deodorants & shampoos prior to going hunting. If your still not convinced then collect a bunch of leaves, pinecones or what ever else is in your hunting area, boil them together in a gallon of water, then strain the pulp and bottle the cover-up scent.
I agree to a point, I smoke but not often out in the field. I will say I personally think that if you smoke out of your stand/blind you will still get deer to come in but you are more likely to see younger deer. The big boys, older swifter deer will avoid the area (not all) yet that is fine by me because I'd rather take a younger doe then a trophy any day. I'm looking to put meat in the freezer rather then show off. christ I know plenty ofguyswhohvebeen smoking or mid-stream when deer came in.
Always try and hunt downwind and you wont go wrong, unless there are no deer. Try not to wear cologne or strong smelling soaps like girls use. It's not our smell that deer don't like, its the soaps, shampoos and scented deodorants.
Fred Bear never used any hight tech scent controlled suits did he? Why do you think that is? A human can never totally eliminate his sent. So the smartest way to hunt is with the wind to your face or quartered away. Africans and Fred Bear have been using this approach since the beginning of time. If wearing charcoal scent suits make you feel more apt to get an animal, then wear them. I DONT...
Dude I would like to see your proof, and I would like to see how many "Trophy" quality deer you have shot..........scent proof is the only way to go, just ask me I've killed over 250 deer over 125" to 205"....I really hope people aren't listening to you because your giving horrible advice!
We get a nice deer or two every year.. we drink and party by a bonfire all weekend and are unable to take a shower before we go out because were in the middle of nowhere and it aint gonna happen. we shoot trophy bucks every year as well. sitting in our stand opening morning we smell like cigarettes and beer and bonfire from the nite before. i shot deer last year that came down wind it came with in 20 yds before I dropped it. nice video....!
How do the deer know where they're supposed to come from? If you take every precaution possible you can see deer from downwind. Not every time of course but more often that smoking a newport menthol.
No bullshit kinda guy I like it, I am not a backwoods hill billie,(dont think this guy is either) but I have smoked while hunting for the past 14 years, as have my brother and father, and actually put my butts out on the bark, so if your ever walking through my property look up, if you see butts in the tree its my spot, we have had great luck, with several B&C deer between us.
