by the way. this is an awesome tutorial. the best one i have seen for compiz fushion. thanks alot. you should post some more tutorials, you would really help out alot of people. you really helped me out. thanks again
I think a lot of people would just like a list of everything you have installed. (for people who want to emulate this look) most importantly, theme settings and desktop picture, and all the little goodies like avant program bar, etc.
Hey, guys, I need help. I'm double-booting with both XP and Ubuntu 8.04 desktop version and i can't hear a sound when I watch videos online and I need to hear this tutorial in Ubuntu. When I'm writing this comment I'm running XP to hear what he is saying. Thanks, in advance.
Sounds like PulseAudio might be messing you up. I would suggest installing pavucontrol from the Synaptic Package Manager and then launching it with alt-f2 (and then typing its name). It will give you options when you right click to chose where the audio should come out. If you have two places to output the audio it might mess up with flash and other stuff like Wine. That stuff has happened to me before.
Long answer: You would have to do a lot of work, it is physically possible, but it would take a bit. Just try it out with a live CD, then if you'd like, install it. They make it very easy :)
THIS IS WHAT the Linux community needs to go mainstream I really appreciate the time that you spent creating this tutorial. I'd love to see more of these; soon I hope to be able to contribute some of my own.
Fianally, a Linux user with good taste who hates clutter as much as I do! Nice desktop. Can you give a tutorial on how to intall this? I am rather new to Linux.
Are you familiar w/ Mandriva 2008?? im about to get a mac book pro and would like to install a second OS. Someone suggested on installing Mandriva 2008?? Do you think this is a pretty good suggestion?? I want to run Microsoft office as wel. does linux let me do that, or does it use something different??
To Gavin part II: In order to get the fully fledged Compiz Fusion, you'll have to go the Synaptic, search for Compiz and Compiz settings manager. Install all this stuff, and after you installed this, you will see an extra "custom" setting option under "appearence" click this one, then you will see the additional settings. You can also access these setting by clicking the "compiz setting manager" icon.
Oh, and you need to go to system->preferences->appearance, go to the effects tab and select custom as well, or your custom settings won't take effect, it seems..
To Gavin: The reason that you can't use the commands etc is because Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon comes preinstalled with Compiz Fusion. However the preinstalled version (which is not the same as in this video) is very very basic.
As much as it's fun to discover features myself, it's quite a bit easier if someone is showing it to me. That's my biggest gripe with Linux. The documentation is all over the place and requires me to hunt for it. It's much easier to just watch videos for a quick start.
Can't wait for KDE 4.0 to come out. I told myself that's my cutoff date to switch back to Linux. That will leave all the other operating systems in the dust in regards to eye candy.
nice video, helped me alot. But i have a question ive just installed compiz fusion and ive enabled the things for you to go get the cube etc, but it still only has 2 desktops. Please reply ASAP!
Yeah I know I've had my eyes on the 7600gt for awhile anyways. But that will be a temporary fix before I build that new rig with 8800 gts. By the way have you heard anything about the fixes with those cards on beryl and compiz?
Nice snazzy presentation. I think you kind of inspired to go get a 7600gt for 100 dollars. The sole reason I ever installed linux
were these effects and after finding out that my ati integrated P.O.S. x200 wouldn't crap in 3d well anything I lost my mind. Now after using things like repositories I'm going to install ubuntu before blowing 300 on xp which is still over priced no matter what on my new rig. And I wish programs like wine are way better.

Two things,
1, how did you get the icons at the bottom like that? The 8 starting with fire-fox one.
2. How do you get the cube to have a background other than black, and the top of mine is yellow

Hey how do you get your settings manager window to be so small? Mine is huge and i can't work with it and it won't let me size it down...
It is really annoying when the window is bigger than the desktop because everytime i click it changes the area of the window i am on.

this is a question open to everyone:
I just downloaded the Gusty Gibbons (Ubuntu 7.10 BETA) version, and when I use these commands, nothing happens.
I also have no menu for changing anything.
Can anyone explain this?
GavinRoskamp
GavinRoskamp 4 years ago
Go to applications->add/remove, select "all available applications" from the dropdown on the right, search for compiz fusion.
Then just install the "Advanced Desktop Effects Settings (ccsm)" package.
Then, when you go to the System->Preferences menu you should have a new entry called advanced desktop effect settings.
Just figured all this out about 3 minutes ago,but it seems to work fine so far.
hughnonr 4 years ago
Oh, and you need to go to system->preferences->appearance, go to the effects tab and select custom as well, or your custom settings won't take effect, it seems..
