This song was prophetic. I know she was singing about a time before the fatal blow, the neo Nazi, fascist take over of the US, via 911, but this song is the tip of the iceberg, the staging of the social engineering world wide. Deep, I'm so grateful for the "Joni Mitchell's" a rose by any other name. Truth is truth, I appreciate that so much, it's healing in a odd way...!
Can't praise her enough, a female Bob Dylan, though Dylan should take that as a compliment, speaking as a guitarist though, her own guitar-work on her recordings, is ferociously difficult to emulate, she is reputed to have used 53 different tunings over the years in various songs,-there is just nobody like her, a true genius.
To me the chords and form of this song echo the music of 'The Hissing of Summer Lawns', same poly-chordal modalities and evocative, economical imagery-it would not be out-of-place on that album.
"just the strong doin' what they can .. and the weak sufferin' what they must...and the gas leaks -- and the oil spills".....Joni's genuis writes to all ages because she understood that oppression will endure (thru the decades) as long as we allow it to.
IMHO and that of many others, Joni is the voice of our generation. When she sings, the lyrics and music work together in a sort of emotional synergy which no one has grasped anywhere nearly as consistently as Joni. She is a World Treasure and her music will outlast us all, many times over.
I just don't hear this kind of music or intellect out of singers that much anymore. I can't believe she doesn't sell more records just because of her age? ridiculous !!
I have often wondered what my life as a woman would have been like if I had not had the gentle genius guidance of Joni Mitchell. She was there through the pain, and the celebrations. Ms. Mitchell. I love you.

Political messages aside, there's some really visceral, effective imagery in the chorus.

Lovely version of this song. Love how she created her own guitarplay, her own hypnotizing chords.....she's just amazing. Thnx for posting.
