Who cares what genre he plays? Obviously if he can play beats this intricate while keeping tempo, he can play jazz and funk easily too. Anyone who says he can't just sucks and wants to make themselves feel better.
not really man. a lot of metal and jazz is closely related, especially drum-wise. there are a lot of odd time signatures and strange syncopated rythms in both genres.
in some way they are closed reltaed, and sometimes fundamental jazz is very used in metal, also a lot of techniques and not only in drums, but is not very useful to compare jazz with metal (or any genre with another so different). if you want to compare drummers, or musicians in general, you should think in the way he sounds, plays, writes, and a lot of things, but not compare by the genre he plays.....but that is just only my point of view!!
Reading through your post again.. sorry. Every metal drummer of this type has roots in more that this style and can play in those styles accordingly. There are death metal drummers that are amazing jazz musicians....anyone can play rock. I mean do you think someone picks up the drums and decides to play like this? You have to start somewhere, and hopefully with a good instructor they will show you more than one narrow view.
Point me in the right direction of a Death Metal drummer that can play jazz like Colaiuta, Weckle, S. Smith or Bissonette for that matter. I get what you are saying. Darren didnt learn this over night. Again he is great at what he does. Its not my cup of tea. Find a Plumber that make 65k a year and ask if he would like to make 100K+ a year playing drums and what do you think the answer will be?

And you think a drummer that loves to play Death Metal would turn down an offer to play on the road for Ozzy cause its not Death Metal? Find that hard to believe. You said Musician. A drummer that would take a gig playing Progressive Rock then hit the studio to do a Jazz cd is what I call a very luck and very capable Musician. AKA;Gregg Bissonette.
Progressive being the key word. Which usually doesnt make it too big because it isnt able to be mass marketed, becuase most people dont get becuase it isnt in four four the entire time. We can see the inverse here. Minnemann is recording on the new Necrophagist CD. Hes not doing it for money. Hes doing it for passion for music. Honestly I was hoping this conversation wouldnt digress into an argument.
Actually Darren Cesca trained under some great drummers, and graduated music school with honors and alot of extra credits, you might be suprised to see what he has done in his short time. Do some research.
I mean shit, I know a drummer that is a math teacher and still has plenty of hours through the week to practice. As well as all weekends off and summers. He plays a similair style of music to this by the way.

I would rather be lumped in to a catagory w/the 3 I mentioned.
Well aside from feel and emotion which are subjective terms anyway. Those guys you mentioned are amazing, but of a completely different style of music. This suits that style and thier style suits thiers. Being a of a true musicians mindset I can think that. I see technicality in this and in those guys, especially bissonette. I agree, its oppinion. Bissonette has been my fav. for 20 years. I took many lessons from him and I TRY and use his aproach/style in my drumming. As I said Darren is great at what he does. It just doesnt appeal to mean. It fits his music but it seems like everyone wants to be Land or Donati just to impress the next guy. Two Amazing guys that to me get old fast. But still amazing.

But guys like Bissonette, well rounded, draw studio paychecks and cd/movie checks and credits.
I dont think that thier ultimate goal is to make money, yeah some would be nice but its more about playing something satisfying to the person playing it. I think getting into music for money, or or holding someone to a higher regard becuase of the money they make, is not a true musicians standpoint.
Ask any drummer if they would rather play drums for a living or work a 40 hour week and still play drums in their spare time and I will guarantee the answer is the first choice.

The musical term solo means someone playing by themselves, usually in a piece. Darren is recording the drums to AIDS, like plenty of people said before. He's playing by himself, it's a solo. Doesn't matter if he's just videoing himself, there is no accompanyment, it's a solo.
