While I have no doubt that Mariah would be able to do this song from a technical standpoint (regardless of whether it's Minnie's version or Shanice's version), I don't think her voice would really fit this song. She has never hit anything that high live or of late. Shanice goes up to A6 here and that is higher than F6. In fact Leona voice is amateur in comparison to Shanice.

I agree with you in parts, but as it relates to Mariah's song choice being the reason why her voice decline is not so. Artists like Patti, Chaka, Jennifer, Jean etc sang more taxing songs than Mariah, yet way over their 40s and into 60s their voices are still strong and forceful. The only thing Mariah did taxing and that's the whistle, and as I always point out if she was using proper technique her voice would not be so damaged.

I wouldn't say that, because as a result of Shanice's cover of Loving You back in 1991, Minnie name was revived and more people learned about her and appreciated her body of work. I am one such person.

Well 'great singing' is relative so I can't fight you on that, but when it comes on to who hits higher notes, you certainly don't know what you are talking about the highest note Leona has hit so far is F6 in her demo of loving You. She has never hit anything that high live or of late. Shanice goes up to A6 here and that is higher than F6. In fact Leona voice is amateur in comparison to Shanice.

The fact that no one cared to sign Mariah before Tommy who was interested more in his sexual desires tells that Mariah isn't that good. I agree with you in parts, but as it relates to Mariah's song choice being the reason why her voice decline is not so. Artists like Patti, Chaka, Jennifer, Jean etc sang more taxing songs than Mariah, yet way over their 40s and into 60s their voices are still strong and forceful. The only thing Mariah did taxing and that's the whistle, and as I always point out if she was using proper technique her voice would not be so damaged.

Why should I check out that FAD! I've seen enough to know she CAN'T SING LIVE! FYI Shanice has won the equivalent of AMI back in the 80s, and not even Xtina who you mentioned won Starsearch when she entered then. Shanice is an expertly trained vocalist who was discovered by record producers at age 11, at that time Mariah was at home dreaming desperately; no wonder she slept her way to the top. Yes Mariah sold millions but I am aware of the billions that were spent to put her there.

and mariah can sing live! check out some of her amazing american idol perfomances. if shanice even auditioned for american idol, she wouldnt make it to hollywood, cause her voice is very forgettable and unimpressive. mariah, leona, christina and others have got true talent and thts way they sell millions and millions. Shanice was just a forgettable one hit wonder with a mediocre voice who has barely sold 1,5-2 millions worldwide, while mariah has sold over 170 million records, so do SHUT UP!!!!!

mariah has a really mature and specctacular voice and whoever denies that is deaf or retarted!! she might be a vain diva with stupid and meaningless love songs but nevertheless i respect her astonishinge voice (she has superb seven octave voice while stupid shanice barely has barely got 3 octaves) generally shanice is a talentless one hit wonder way less talented or succesful than mariah (mariah 18 #1s shanice 0 #1s only one #2). nobody knows her cause she just a has-been one hit wonder.

Mariah HAD a good voice, but much of that was due to studio effects, when live she sounds hoarse and damaged. It's a good thing she was screwing Tommy because that was her ticket to Hollywood. So don't hate on Shanice because she can sing any time, any place, any where with or without studio effects. It's not Shanice fault Mariah sounds horrible, it's fate that has caught up on her, never mess up a marriage, else you'll pay dearly. So despite Mariah hits she still seems like fish out of water.

Why people do have to fight about such subjects. For your info. Mariah as more or less a 5 octaves range not 7, as well as Shanice. Shanice is a wonderful singer and has an incredible technic especially in whistling which she does perfectly unlike Mariah who does it sending too much air. That is one of the reasons why she killed her voice...I love both of them but miss the 90's Mariah both for vocals and songs...

I think 'handnote' needs to listen again. Shanice started out softly and so the whistle at 1:09 was also soft, but as the beat grows intense and she lifts her voice powerfully, she also whistles higher, so her whistle is inline with the beat. Shanice has perfect control.

U must be joking! Yes there's a BIG difference 2 the 91 version, but ONLY in music/interpretation. As it relates to vocal, Shanice vocals are even more superb than when she was 18 back in 1991! Haven't u seen her recent LIVE performance in Japan and on B Scott interview. And haven't u heard her latest song, 'Let Me Be Your Angel?' How in God's name can u seriously say Shanice voice has lessen? U need to listen her albums be4 u make comments. I have her albums and I can say Shanice has got BETTER

Your comment implies that I HAVEN'T listened to her albums. I HAVE. ALL of them, from her debut 21 years ago right up until the present day and I stand by what I said. The tone of her voice has changed has she's gotten older. It's much deeper than it was even as recent as 1999. This version of sounds like she's trying REALLY hard to hit those high notes, whereas on the 91 version, it sounded effortless.

Shanice notes are stronger than be4! Shanice voice on her 91 and 94 albums were dark in colour while on her 99 album she sounds quite girly. That's becuz Shanice sings in a tone to match the album concept. And if u had seen her recent live performances I don't know how U cud proudly stand by ur first opinion. are better suited to be Minnie's children than Mariah. That is why u need to look at all artistes comprehensively be4 making judgements. For one, Minnie's voice was very sweet and clear in her expression, she was never charged with oversinging to evoke emotions, likewise Shanice! But Mariah has been charged with oversinging and her voice is not as clear or as 'discipline' as Shanice. So take these into estimation before forming conclusions.

Whilst u might have good intention on both ends, I am inclined to respond. There is more to singing than 'whistling' and though Mariah has so far gone higher than Shanice, I am afraid 2say I doubt Mariah doing this classic justice, I just can't picture her voice and whistle doing so, becuz Mariah's whistles are not 'wholesome' like Shanice and Minnie has an earthy feel to her whistles, which makes Shanice's more fitting. Also if whistling is all u care about, it is fitting 2say Georgia and Adam

Shanice lacks one thing that Minnie effortlessly embodied - sensuality. I find this version very self-conscious.
And to whomever stated that Minnie was not an "emotional" singer...over-singing does not equate with being emotional. Everytime I hear Minnie sing (especially her slower-tempo tracks off "Come To My Garden" & "Stay In Love")I am deeply moved. Profoundly. Singers like Minnie, Syreeta, Phyllis Hyman, Aretha, Labelle, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Zulema embodied feeling.

And by no means is Minnie a whistleregister queen, she was a human that practised what she was best at till she got it where she wanted it to be. HEr sounds better not cause it was original, but because it had a powerful meaning to her, she perfected the song, to sing it to her child. It was not a mere tool to promote her ability. To me her's contains beauty no other will ever match.
