Hey, I resemble that horny perv remark. I was a sailor in the American navy. We weren't " horny pervs that couldn't have a normal relationship." We were just horny normally.
I grew up to this music. I learned of my Irish heritage from Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers (And others; The Chieftens, Irish Rovers, Etc). It warms my heart to hear a new generation keeping it going. Erin go Braugh!
I do love this song and the High Kings do a great version. But just FYI and histories sake " The Holy Ground " was a notorious red light district in the town of Queentown, County Cork in Southern Ireland. It was a major seaport in the 19th century. Queenstown has since been remained and is the current town of Cobh, County Cork. I may get some thumbs down for posting this but that's okay. I like to know the history of these songs. Thought some of you might also.
That is very interesting, and thumbs up, but after some research, I read that this story is about a man who goes away on a ship, promising to return. A storm hits, and when he survives, he goes to the pub, forgetting about the girl. He then goes back out to sea. I found your information about the holy ground very interesting though.
Thank you, eaturspinach. I'm not wholly sure that the Holy Ground in Queenstown was the vessel which caused this song to be written. It could have been the version you mentioned. I like to know the history so I'll do some further digging. I'll let you know if I come up with anything definitive. Salute.
Listen to his fathers version of this, you may change your mind, i think they are great and am so pleased that the clancy brothers music lives on and on and on and on and on
@bondie45 Yes, the High Kings are the 21st Century reincarnation of the Clancys & Tommy Makem: updated, polished and upbeat, but still old, traditional Irish. God bless 'em lads!!
A great tribute to his father and uncles, Bobby, Tom, Paddy and Liam. It's wonderful to see this love and respect for what came before them - also never letting us forget the Legend of Tommy Makem and The Clancy Brothers!
To see Finbarr Clancy (the speaker in this clip) singing with the Clancy Brothers search for "Haul Away Joe - Clancy Brothers & Robbie O'Connell." The Clancys were getting old by then, but it was nice that Finbarr had the opportunity to tour with them.
This is my 2 yr old's favorite song ever!!! He dances the whole time and when they sing "Fine girl ya'are!" He throws his hands up in the air. Awesome!
This song is absolutely amazing. This is enough to get anyone on their feet. My 1 1/2 year old daughter loves this song and the Wild Rover and knows almost all the words to the songs. I'm hoping to take her to see the High Kings sometime. JOB WELL DONE BOYS!!!
I really want to like these guys. Nothing wrong with the singing. But I have a problem with the Dublin 4 accents shouting "Come on lads" etc. during the songs. If you want to create an authentic ambience of Irishness in the song you'll have to get rid of that D4/West Brit accent.... it just kills your attenpts towards authenticity.
they are a talented group but a bit too polished for my liking! Maybe when i see them live I'll like them a bit more! They do a great job of this song though!
I'll be testing some of their music on my foreign friends in Ireland to see what they think as they don't seem to like my usual Irish Music!
How can anyone who is Irish, whether in Eire or in the Diaspora, not listen to this and have their hearts swell with pride? What else holds the Irish around the world together than our tradition of music, of hospitality, of celebration in times very good and very bad. We are family, all of us, across the globe, separated for decades but always proud and ever connected by common blood and love for our motherland.
Okay, I love both Celtic Thunder and High Kings, but you can't say one's better than the other. Why? They're two VERY different styles of music. The High Kings are very traditional Irish ballads, and sound very Celtic. Celtic Thunder, like Celtic Woman, has a very contemporary sound, but that doesn't mean they're better or worse. So... there. Mwha.
First of all, I'm a girl, lol. And that's your opinion and I respect that. Personally, I like Celtic Thunder's style more, though I like both in different ways. But *shrugs* whatever
I understand what you mean, but music has to change and bands like these are carrying on irish traditional music but suiting it more to todays audience.
Very similiar to the great Clancy brothers. Typical of the balleds of the sixties. The great thing about this group is that they will probably casue a resurgence in irish folk music which is what is needed. Sing on lads.
Wouldn't it be awesome if Celtic Woman & The High Kings did a gala concert together? Each group doing some of their own songs & some sung by all of them. What do y'all think?
I think their management will probably keep them away from anything remotely controversial. It is obvious from their performance that they are very carefully stage managed.
This music never gets old... it's adored both by old ladies, as you can see in the audience, and Latvian teenagers, like me :)
