I think that this is the idea of "covers". You take a basic idea from the original and then you improvise as a homage to the owners.Otherwise is just same song, different band..
@AngelBeeps this cover obviously isnt supposed to be slow and haunting, it's supposed to crush bones!! when it has the same lyrics and title it doesnt mean that it's the same song.
I actually like the original better, which surprised me. I guess I prefer the more empty feeling of S&G's version. Still, it's amazing how well these lyrics match Nevermore's style.
This version made me smile. It made me smile to know that every time this band sells another CD of this abortion, Paul Simon gets a cut of their take. That's the way to do it, Paul! LMAO!!
This has breathed new life and made me finally enjoy a song that I have hated with a passion. It certainly surprised me, but I find this to be an excellent re-imagining which deserves to be rated on its own merit instead of whether or not it's similar to the original.
Don't know why there are all these haters, it's a metal song with known lyrics. And imo; it's a f*cking good metal-song.
"HORRIBLE COVER. If I get spammed it just proves taste in music and poetry have gone down the shitter."
Why do u say that? This is not just another band that replays a famous song. It's a band that plays a totaly different kind of music and they made their own sound around this song.
'music and poetry have gone down the shitter'... now this is what a real poet would say...
this is an amazing color, i enjoy it more than the original, of course i'm not a big Simon & Garfunkel fan so that's not saying too much, but this is really how to do a cover, you take a song you like and put your style into it, and that's exactly what Nevermore did, wonderful.
Nevermore took the "hippy" out of the original S&G version which is an abstract juxtaposition of a heavy thought with light singing where the music was a polar opposite of the story of the song. I like this version because it really brings out the darker side of the story.
When I found it (Just a sec ago), I was afraid it would sound horrible, because the original doesn't sound like Nevermore, at all. I was really relieved when I heard they suited it to their own unique sound :D
The only reason people are griping about this is the song title pulled a bunch of hippy "they don't make music like they used to!" classic rock has-beens with narrow-minded musical tastes into viewing / listening to this. Comparing Simon & Garfunkel to Nevermore is absolutely ridiculous. Both produced great music, but seriously? Next topic, let's talk about how much better Neil Young's version of Harvest is than Opeth's. What's that you say? They're not the same song or genre? Wait a minute..
@elixiriszog nope, I love metal. I think this is pretty cruddy sounding. It's my personal opinion, but it's apparently one shared by many others. I'm not going to try and convince anyone of it, but honestly? If they weren't going to make it sound -anything- like the original, I don't see why they bothered.
@Freistaat1918 The ONLY definition of a cover, is that it's a song that was first made popular and recorded by another artist.
Nevermore is singing "Sound of Silence", which was made popular and recorded by Simon & Garfunkel. The music can be as different as it wants. The basic rhythm of the sound remains the same, as does the vocal progression.
Otherwise with your logic, Johnny Cash doing Nine Inch Nails "Hurt" isn't a cover.
@Freistaat1918 the very beginning has the same melody.... and i say if they have to give s&g ANY credit, it's a cover.... but that's just my opinion. i personally like covers that aren't trying to be exactly like the original.... to me, that's only point in covering a song.
There is a thin line between making a cover your own original work, and turning it in to an abomination. This dashes across that line, then goes back and takes a massive fucking shit on that line. And that's all I have to say about that.
@MrCatFetish I really like the music, and it is well executed, I just don't think that the lyrics work in such an aggressive context. I liked it better the second time around, to be sure, but only after I made myself stop thinking about the fact that it is a cover. @ladiosadawnpatrol dude seriously it was in tribute of them not to dis them and im sure simon and garfunkel would respect this cover. and what the fuck is this shit about no taste in music? someones liking in music is their opinion tbh i could say right now you have no taste at all in music but you know what thats my opinion im sure in your mind the music you listen is the ultimate best shit ever dont dis on other peoples preference of music because it goes both ways.

@ladiosadawnpatrol you are a fucking retarded piece of shit. obviously you dont know wtf you are talking about nevermore is probly the greatest metal band of all time. instrumentally lyrically and every aspect.
@Renagade1325 I think it's supposed to show the polarity on people's perception of ''silence''.
The original shows it as a peaceful confrontation where bliss can be found through it.
Nevermore, known for their 'reality-shock' subject matter, show it as a bleak and uncertain fascade: not knowing what lies within the silence drives agonising fear within all humans, it's our nature.
They don't just cover an awesome song well but also show both sides of the coin. THAT is what a good cover is.
@Renagade1325 Haha, thank you. Same here. Thing is, the original COULD be metal-ized without being ridiculous. It could be a power ballad. Check out "Paled Empty Sphere" by Hypocrisy, or the acoustic/electric version of "Diamonds & Rust" done by Judas Priest to see what I mean.
@Renagade1325 Metal IS awesome, but I definitley disagree. I love both versions, perhaps this one a little more. I do partly agree, if they had done it more in the tone of say Sell My Heart For Stones, it'd be better, but I still love this version.
Well, call me stupid for this opinion but for me neither this cover nor the very original really represent the lyrics, nor do they express the feeling of the vocal's tune as it's composed, although I usually like both, Nevermore and the Sound of Silence as a composition, but while this Version is too brutal, the original one contains too little darkness and severity...can't help myself...
@GuiltAndFailure actually, I agree...... the song should be a mellow one, but the original is too warm and just doesn't rise to the expectations of the title and lyrics...
cmon people, if you wouldn't know the original, you ALL would say that this is badass! if they would have changed the lyrics and it wouldn't be a cover it would be just an awesome song, and isn't it all about awesome songs?

Nevermore did NOTHING for this song at all. The lyrics when sung this way are represented in a different sense and the heavy guitaring certainly doesn't set the mood of the song.
well when someone makes a remake its generally purposed to sound like an improved version of the orinigal keeping SOME of its origins. The point of a remake is to resemble the original in some way. This is not good im sorry. For one thing the music is god awful as is the vocals. A REAL remake is "leaves eyes" - scarborough fair. THATS a damn good remake. Look it up geeks.
"And the vision that was planted in my brain still remains... within the sound of silence... the sound of silence!" love it! makes my skin crawl. Fuck the haters Sanctuary is amazing!!!!
To be honest, this is my favorite version of this song. I'm a douche who loves this style of music.
Of course, I love Simon and Garfunkel's version as well.
It's very, very interesting to me how much the way someone sings and a change of music can change the entire meaning of the lyrics. I don't see why some people are made upset by this, because there isn't really a "correct," way to interpret the words of a song.
@MachinaeSupremacist oh, my apologies. i thought that the EMO version of this song that rolled through radios something about a year back was the original. i had no idear that that wasn't the original. but still pefer this version though :)
@666MetalMatt gimmy a break. i mostly listen to Death Metal and Industrial so i think the mere fact that i realise that theres other versions of this sould be aplauded :(
@Krobeles You are calling simon and garfunkel emo.that was stupid. All music s supposed to be emotional anyways, thats what makes it art. This just isnt even close to the sterotype/fad that is emo.The lyrics are really dark.
I love metal, and I love Sound of Silence. This however, as a song, I find merely satisfactory. The melody bears absolutely no resemblance to the original. Now, I know that covers aren't supposed to sound exactly the same but this is barely even the same song.
well, Nevermore's covers are always like that, they have almost zero resembelance to the original ones... Have you ever heard their cover of Love Bites, by Judas Priest, for example?
However, with all respect to the original ones I think they sound good, not exactly as covers, more as new songs witth influences from the original ones.
i take this as a nevermore song and nothing more. if you assholes stop trying to compare it to S&G you would find that this is an incredible song.

Of course, I love Simon and Garfunkel's version as well.
It's very, very interesting to me how much the way someone sings and a change of music can change the entire meaning of the lyrics. I don't see why some people are made upset by this, because there isn't really a "correct," way to interpret the words of a song.

Totally changed the mood of the lyrics, as well as the music. The sinister way Warrel sings them gives them a whole new meaning.

I had this disc years ago, I never knew this was a cover.
And I'd already heard the original but it didn't click.
I'll just smoke another bowl and get over it eventually.

@Krobeles What? Simon and Garfunkel are "emo" to you? That makes *less* than no sense. Where the hell did you get that from?
MachinaeSupremacist 1 year ago
@MachinaeSupremacist oh, my apologies. i thought that the EMO version of this song that rolled through radios something about a year back was the original. i had no idear that that wasn't the original. but still pefer this version though :)

666MetalMatt 1 year ago
@666MetalMatt gimmy a break. i mostly listen to Death Metal and Industrial so i think the mere fact that i realise that theres other versions of this sould be aplauded :(
Krobeles 1 year ago
@Krobeles You are calling simon and garfunkel emo.that was stupid. All music s supposed to be emotional anyways, thats what makes it art. This just isnt even close to the sterotype/fad that is emo.The lyrics are really dark.
666MetalMatt 1 year ago
@666MetalMatt no. i am calling the version i heard on the radio emo. not the original or this one.

I just want to clarify everyone about this. Its not a cover. Its not a re-creation.
Its completely original, they only wanted to re-imagine. They succeded

I love metal, and I love Sound of Silence. This however, as a song, I find merely satisfactory. The melody bears absolutely no resemblance to the original. Now, I know that covers aren't supposed to sound exactly the same but this is barely even the same song.
Craigomyeggo 1 year ago
@Craigomyeggo
well, Nevermore's covers are always like that, they have almost zero resembelance to the original ones... Have you ever heard their cover of Love Bites, by Judas Priest, for example?
However, with all respect to the original ones I think they sound good, not exactly as covers, more as new songs witth influences from the original ones.
I respect what you wrote, though
