  • this isnt grunge, its more like grunge

  • great song

  • he still has that voice!

  • This song makes me thinks at the white stripes but ... without drums! :) good song

  • Neil looked out of his mansion and over his hundreds of acres in Northern Cali and decided to rearrange the room. Would the ornate organ look good over there in front of the window? THEN he noticed the anger out here. Seriously, what is the deal with the video? I love the opening with the satellite/moon arcing over the sky, but then? Shouldn't it show some of the....anger that the song so beautifully and perfectly captures? Anyone else think the video is an odd match for the song?

  • Mr Shakey nails the TRUTH

  • Im usually kinda happy..

Unless theres a fisherman driving 25 mph in front of me on the expressway during rush hour...

  • when neil young dies im going to cry

  • @TheArmyRanger82nd

I CONCER, I TOO WILL BE CRYING FOR A MAN WHO HAS CHANGED MY LIFE IN SO MANY WAYS. BACK IN THE LATE 70'S, MY BF AND I HITCHED FROM NY TO OHIO, BUT WHEN WE GOT P/U BY SOME BASTERD GUYS WHO WE NICK- NAMED FRED AND WILBER (THE FAT PIG) IN THERE 16 WHEELER-PUT IT THIS WAY, NIEL YOUNG HELPED US GET HOME SAFELY BECAUSE HIS SONGS, LIKE DOWN BY THE RIVER WHICH WE SANG AS "THE BAD MEN" DROVE OFF LEAVING US IN W.VIRGINIA MOUNTAINS. IT DIDNT MATTER. WE HAD NIEL ON OUR SIDE...

  • @karenschank Hello Mr. Capslock

  • sounds a shit load like gary jules' mad world i think

  • @atomicwedgieify lol you must be talking about the lyrics because the song itself sounds nothing like that song... and if you mean the lyrics then you must of meant tears for fears mad world

  • @atomicwedgieify Yeah if it got kicked up the arse with a distortion pedal!

  • What a great album, Neil is the man!

  • Not a bad song, but 'Tighten Up' was better

  • @Birgalicious75 yep, but the Grammies are so wack....Tighten Up sounds more R&B to me than this...as Neil said ' there is no best in music'

  • 1. he won the best song award with a song of just him and a guitar with an overdub or two 2. hes neil young ... thats all i need to prove hes awesome

  • fucking advertisments

  • the world is so screwed up today by armchair politicians, war hungry generals, greedy corporations and their minions, certain countries using their wealth and influence to bully other nations to plunder earth's fragile natural resources, etc...neil sings from the heart and soul, keep the music coming, neil!

  • godfather of grunge

  • Neil Young has the worst greatest voice there ever was! It's like this, he's such an artist that he can work it out and create music that we love.

  • I'm glad this was chosen over Little fucking lion man.

  • Not a competition hes neil young undenialable talent

  • No doubt everything will go as planned... Yeah...

  • @livinginthepast3 I agree, and when I say he never sold out I wasn't talking monetarily either, his shows always sold out in the day. But he was never a sell out to the corporate influences that be. Makes me respect him all the more! Ian Anderson was a lot of fun too! :)

  • @Remulaktake2 Long May He Run!

  • love the song and the mix. WowNeil looks here just like Jan Schrama..

  • @Remulaktake2 still got bob dylan

  • Sorry for the duplicate posts

  • I started to listen to this fine musician in the very early 70's, I paid to see him live and bought his albums, I guess you could say I like his music. As for the man, I never heard him sing a single lie. Neil, is from the heart. He never sold out. I'm sure when its my time to pass in this life, one of my last request will be that something special be played for my guests. Maybe "Comes A Time"! I sang many of his great songs growing up,out on the weekends, friends used to call me "Neal Old".

  • I started to listen to this fine musician in the very early 70's, Through the years I paid to see him live and bought his albums, I guess you could say I like his music. But for the man, I never heard him sing a single lie. Old Neil, is from the heart, all the way. He never sold out. Not in my eyes. I'm sure when its my time to pass in this life, one of my last request will be that something special be played for my guests. Maybe "Comes A Time"!

  • @nealold1 Spot on assessment...Neil is a no nonsense, honest musician. Free from boundaries, presumption, and silly pop "iconery."

  • Theres plenty of good rock bands out right now, I'm fucking sick of people saying that. Check out Black Keys, My Morning Jacket, Dead Confederate, Alberta Cross, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club for starters.

  • The Grammy's are completely irrelevant when it comes to groundbreaking music. Neil Young is way above that. One of the few artists who has remained his credibility after all these years. We should treasure that...

  • my comment wont have much impact, according to neil his music wont change the world. however. neil is concluding its an angry world yet in between the refrain you hear major notes, concluding that even though its an angry world that there is hope.

Id like to see andy Lau of Hong Kong do this song with all of his beatiful dancers.

neils beatlistic record repeat is so awesome I hope he continues doing more

similiar in some respects to his trans venue with the synclavier instument

  • Neil gets old, BUT DOESNT GET OLD !!! its as easy as that !!

  • I love Neil young, but the fact that a 65 year old man won the Grammy for the best rock song is ridiculous. Why isn't there any good new rock bands?

  • @johnnyscouser check out The Black Keys if you're living on the moon for the last ten years. Plus Neil rules you dumb.

  • @KeepTheFocus I don't see tighten up getting a grammy

  • @johnnyscouser because most of the new rock sux

  • @johnnyscouser because most of the new rock sux

old rock always has been and always will be the best

  • Bought this album yesterday it's amazing, unique & experimental. While most artists are living off their past at this stage of their career Neil Young is producing new vital material like this!

  • I saw this guy at a bar in winnipeg he's a cocky fucker hahaha

  • i do think there is a great sound here but having listened to two songs from le noise I am very dissapointed with the weakness in the song craft . i play a few of neils songs and they are magical but this is so far from his best . when lyrics are bland or obvious then we the listener fail to be drawn in . if I was at an open mic night and someone sang this song as their own I would be heading to the bar.

  • great stuff!

  • The lyrics do seem a tad inane. But surely Neil Young has better songs to be remembered for.

Gosh .. I so avoid listening to "Philadelphia". Am reduced to a hopeless, sentimental ass when I listen to it :-)

  • I hate the end, its kinda disappointing

  • Imagine if Neil contacted Flea/Chad to record an alternate version of the album that included a rhythm section

  • Personally, I like the song. It's a million miles away from being Neil's greatest, but it's relevant. Personally, however, if I had to choose any single song from the "Le Noise" album to win this Grammy, it definately would've been "Love and War". And to all those who are hating on Neil and are like "wot?", as the person above, look at his discography. The man's managed to create 43 solo albums. Nuff said, period. And Neil Young lives in New York. He's not yours anymore, Canada. Get over it.

  • @kincoism Actually, I think he lives in California, and he retains Canadian citizenship.

  • @ifeeltiredsleepy right..Santa Cruz mountains for nearly 40 years...I'm a Canuck myself..in the US since 85 and moving to No Cal next year

  • His voice hasn't changed!

  • @HayabusaRecon You help make up this Angry World. You clearly aren't familiar with Neil Young and his work.

  • I'll stick with Sugar Mountain. This is rubbish.

  • his voice is annoying, like billy maddison's voice when talking to the penguin

  • He has still Got It

  • Canada: the 51st state.

There's more difference in culture between new york and alabama than new york and ontario.

  • @dietmrfizz What type of excuse is that? Canada should never be considered the 51st state, ever.

  • I wish this album waited a bit.,,,,I love Dan's work and Neil but this has not grown on me at all. It's rare that I'm even critical.

  • This song sounds like a child making noise with a guitar and shouting out words.

  • @choclatecupcakes2 you're a dope

  • The thing about it is this. This has substance. It's definitely rock. it is origanal and daring. As far as young hard working bands putting all this effort into something, then you know nothing about Neil and his perfectionist side. A young band can work for weeks trying to get what Neil does in a day. It's called experience. The real fact is, he's never left relevance. Check out his discography sometime. It didnt stop in the seventies. Congrats Neil, keep it up. The rest, keep trying.

  • Rush and old Neil are both Canadaian

  • What a beautiful man. No homo.

  • Its funny how the ad that came on before this was about that new video game where north korea invades the united states and the ad is just guns and shooting everywhere. I found that ironic!

  • I love Neil Young and I like this song, but how did this win a grammy for best rock song? There were so many other better rock songs

  • Comment removed

  • neil rocks - see my channel for many Neil videos!

  • And do go off sayn O then why are u listening to it! i just saw that this dude won and i wanted to see if he was any good

  • No Rush is like x100 better than this dude

  • Now how did this song beat rush?

  • @gosdang because Neil Young > Rush

  • "I'm not Grammy material," he said in a 1987 interview recounted in the authorized biography "Shakey." "I hate that s---. It has nothing to do with rock 'n' roll. It only has to do with Hollywood, and it's jive -- a buncha people handin' each other awards and talkin' about how they made the best record ... There is no best in music."

  • @drumrz2 One of the most true statements I have ever read. Well said!

  • i'm laughing at all the people coming in here, getting mad because he won best rock song, well here is the thing. Neil young didn't ask to be nominated, the board did and they chose it, so instead of bashing such a wonderful song, bash the boards. Neil Young maybe old but he can still rock out hard then alot of us, Check him out with bruce springsteen (all along the watchtower) and Pearl jam 93'. and people who think he sucks, then you have no idea what good music is. also congrats on the award

  • @EliotNess4rmWest The board simply screwed up years ago when they could have given him a Grammy for "Heart of Gold" easy. Now they try to make it up and choose this song, which is pretty cool. I like it, I learned it on guitar too. But yeah, they couldn't go back and pick a classic to give him a Grammy, which he easily deserves before he's done and they Grammy commit don't want to look stupid leaving him out.

  • I love Neil Young's music but Little Lion Man shoulda won the Grammy. It was by far more powerful and will hold up in the long run. This sounds like a b-side or filler song. And to those who say he can't rock well you're way off. Just search something like "Neil Young and Pearl Jam" and you'll see what I mean.

  • @diggitymoon Little Lion Man is the best! <3

  • his voice doesnt really seem to be suitable to the guitar or visa versa, but thats just my opinion

  • dude .. this song is quite overrated ... i mean winning the best rock song of the year.. from my oppinion this is not that good of a rock song , he`s voice is just way to soft , the guy can sing a folk song country song or w.e but just can`t rock(only reffering on this song ).

  • @alexczink you haven't hear " Rust Never Sleeps " then

  • @alexczink Fuck you! listen to hey hey my my

  • I968Velle, this was one of the awards that they actually got right at the Grammys.

That, and the Arcade Fire win.

  • when you rock, you rock

  • as a great fan of neil for the past 39 years and having personally met him several times to thank him for his music, i thought i had lost my mind at 53 years old when i heard this after hearing he had finally won a grammy award... it's typical neil on the far side experimental but definitely, in my opinion, not one of his best. maybe it's one tune that has to be heard right where it was recorded to appreciate the reverberation? he's still a legend, grammy or not. thankx for the post...

  • Is this a joke? How is this the best rock song of the year?

  • I really love Neil Young, and think he's written some fantastic songs, but I'm sorry, this production just sounds sloppy. Neil's thin voice is better suited for the sound coming out of his guitar in southern man; it's just squashed by that huge, heavy, bass n' mids guitar.

And that looped vocal sounds like it belongs in a euro-house song. It feels grating.

Congrats to Neil; he deserves Grammys for Needle and the Damage Done, for Old Man, and many more, but for this? This was a miss.

  • Good song, but the video purposely does not show the angriest part of this world - the muslim world who is enraged at every group beside them, different from them or even a different sect than them. But that overlooking and ignoring is something all leftists are known for.

  • Neil is still relevant after all these years. He does more with whiny vocals and 3 chords than most of the over-produced Grammy winners ever could achieve with their arsenal of electronic tricks. I'd like to hear this song without all the effects, though. The buzzing feedback detracts from the message. (Maybe it's my cheesy computer speakers). You go, Grandpa Neil!!

  • this song is absolute shit. im still confused how this song got best rock song over mumford and sons.

  • @drummerboyz24

Mumford and Sons? Maybe because they aren't rock.

  • STEEL IS MADE TO LAST..... RUST DOES SLEEP. But has to be sanded and painted sometimes. Good as ever Neil, Wife, and Son.

  • Hey hankd18, music is very personal, I happen to love Neil's music and have for many, many years. I like this song very much. Odds are, if you were to tell me what you liked, I wouldn't. Take it for what it is.

Congrats Neil for a well deserved Grammy!!

  • Congrats Grammy Winner!

  • What a piece of crap. You people are delusional.

  • Congratulations for your Grammy Award! As if you are totally reading this on your account, I just want some thumbs ups!

  • Wow. I like it. Its weirdly Neil. He's got to stay on the edge. He's got to stay real. He will not stop being him self. I'm mixed on having just a singel, electric guitar. On one hand its very cool with its uniquely far out fuzz tone. On the other hand, I could imagine it with a very hard, slow, john bonham rock beat. Lyrically, you're reminded of how things how completely changed from the free love/medical/food 60s. We definitely got uglier in Bush's 8 years. What if Gore had won in 2000?

  • It's humorous to see all the "bad sports" come here to bash this song. It's cool as hell, and definitely ROCK. I listened to some of the other crap nominated for best ROCK song, like Little Lion Man-----nice folk songs but NOT ROCK at all.

  • @RiverRat99 I know you're trying to add emphasis to the word "rock", but you are aware ALLCAPS just looks stupid, right?

  • @RiverRat99 no, I am not aware, so how to I emphasize anything, I do realize if you cap alot it looks like yelling. Please educate me Obi-wan.....

  • wtf boring

  • hey hey my my is far better than this song

  • Neil Young has ALWAYS been MY Bob Dylan. I love the lack of POP in what he does. It's refreshing to NOT hear a Jonas Bros. Beat. This kind of work may save REAL ROCK MUSIC. Rock, by it's very nature, pushes boundaries around. Brilliant.

  • sometimes awards are given in recognition of a lifetime of great music, not necessarily for the specific category a musician or actor wins it for. This is one of those times.

  • i like it

  • his name may be Neil "YOUNG" but he is trully far tooo old to make a rock song !!

  • u call this a "ROCK" song ?

  • neil young is ruined

  • cant believe tis shit got a grammy!!

  • This is a grammy winner??? This is the worst song I've ever heard. It sounds like a sad old man who drank too much and recorded a depressing a song.

  • thumbs up if you came to check him out after watching the grammys

  • Actually the best song on there is probably "Peaceful Valley Boulevard". It's not Grammy material either, but he gets on one of those lyrical rolls that he used to do so well in the '70s. And I really like what Daniel Lanois did producing these. He makes the echo effects throughout the tracks into a cool thing, very new for Neil songs.

  • we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate we ate

  • hey brutha and sistahs of the shakey persuasion...this grammy is a make up call...any sports fans out there...neil deserves the make up call, and it has nothing to do with this song...it has to do with those 'refs' missing all the calls earlier in the game...back in the 70's, even the 80's to some extent..."...over and over again my love" embrace the love...the song is a toss away soon to be forgotten, we all know that....now how about getting some airplay for those ragged glory faves!

  • Who are you people?

    ccrider

  • Who are you people?

  • This was just a chance to finally give him the Grammy he deserves for his old work. Sometimes that happens, especially with long-hair rock people who weren't respectable to the older generation when their songwriting was hot.

As for this song, I like it. Grammy material? No not really.

  • @lucidwebpress THANK YOU. I agree totally. For his old work, cuz this isn't an grammy worthy song, but maybe it depends on criteria, but outta ALL the songs?? no way. pretty good song though, lotta awesome sounds/echoes, i can't wait to get my new headphones for it. I feel like it needs to be put in an indie film, sounds like where in belongs, in Slacker, Clerks or something. Even Freaks and Geeks. Guess I have'ta put in it mine LoL

  • I've been following Neil Young since 1968. I thought that Hitchhiker or Love and War were better cuts from the album. If this song is not a grammy worthy, consider it payback for a number times when Young was ignored. Harvest , Rust never Sleeps, Freedoom are classic album that didn't get a sniff from the Grammy. He's 65!! It's pretty bad when a senior beat out everyone else for best rock song. It's better to burn out than it is to rust.

  • Compared to some of the winners, this one is great ...

  • I'm a pretty huge Neil Young fan... but I gotta say, this song in particular is certainly not worthy of a Grammy.

  • This trash won ?

  • dont deserve it

  • The Grammy should be molded from this great artists image.

  • Neil Young the proud Winnipeger!

  • This would have been better with Crazy Horse.

  • i must say i've been a fan my whole life but he kind of stopped being very good many years ago. i tend to agree that this certainly wasn't worth a grammy. must be some die hard fans in the the group who picked it.

  • The problem is not whether this song is Rock. The definition of Rock is not precise, and Folk isn't either. There are lots of folkies who would laugh at the idea of a song with the torn-speaker sounding distortion of this song could be called Folk.

I think Neil Young as an artist is one of the greats, worthy of a Grammy if one cares about such things. But whether he should win for this song is another matter. I mean, it's an OK song, but it shouldn't make a list of the top 25 Neil Young song.

  • Même si je ne suis pas une spécialiste en la matière, je n'ai jamais douté de son talent. Quelque soit sa nationalité, IL EST, c'est tout et je doute que ce génie ait réellement attendu cette reconnaissance.

    Merci à lui.

  • Great song! I don't know if it was rock song of the year, but still great.

  • Congratulations for your Grammy's Award!

  • @MrLouisfine shite song

  • It's in the message. No jobs. Talking about all the things we did in the 70's & 80's some didn't make it threw so well. I was just dam lucky. The young of today. U have to listen to words to get it.

  • Honestly, judging this by a song alone, not just a Neil Young song, it really isn't very good and certainly not grammy-deserving. This was a sad loss for the other artists who had earned that grammy. If people want Neil Young to get a grammy because he never got one before so bad, then just give him like a lifetime achievement grammy or something like that but not rip off hard-working bands and artists who should've won this.

  • It's in the message.

  • I've listened to Neil Young all of my life, I love all his stuff, especially when he was part of CSNY. The fact that he never won a grammy until now is despicable, but this song does not deserve a Grammy. The heavily distorted guitar makes the song sound like shit, and it really doesn't sound like a Neil Young song at all...

  • holly shit! r u fuckin dumb or me? how the hell this won Grammy???

  • Apologies to everyone from Canada and beyond. I do know he is Canadian but in my celebration of the American Grammy that he won I misspoke. Even though he is Canadian and deservedly the pride of your country, we claim him as well as an icon. If I ever make it to that town in north Ontario I hope to meet up with some others with dream comfort memory to spare.

  • @jeffreyhsykes Check out the museum named after him, its pretty cool

  • How did this song win a grammy?

  • @BulldogNation08 That's a ridiculous question.

  • Canada is part of North America idiots.

  • This has nothing to do with whether my favorite band won or lost, but this song had no right being in the "best rock song" category. There were so many songs that were so much better. At no point in this song, is there...ROCK. This is a sappy, folk song if anything. I love it, don't get me wrong, and I love Neil Young. But seriously, there were much better categorized songs that could have won. But it just goes to prove, the music industry has become a total joke.

  • @Raazer You're a child. You don't know what Rock is.

Kindly shut your mouth. The Grammy awards have always been a joke. Neil doesn't give two shits if he never wins one. The fact that you care who does wins one when you say in the same breath that the industry is a joke just goes to show how immature and childish you are. You're clearly not a fan of NY.. Just some asspained kid who's mad his favourite band didn't win some shitty award.

  • @darkcowboyhero first off...fuck your mother and die in a fire, shit dick.

Second i'm a 37 year old with one of the most eclectic music tastes you'd ever see. I actually have been a fan of Neil Young for almost 30 years. When I first heard him with CSNY. However, this song DOES NOT belong in the best rock song category. It is a folk song. Now, if he had been awarded for Rockin' the Free World...then yes i'd be all for it. That's just how it is. Plain and Simple. I don't give a fuck who wins...

  • @Raazer HAHAHA.. If you're 37 years old then you're one sad retarded idiot man. You're not a fan of Young, nor is this song folk. You're a moron. It can easily be classified as rock.

Rockin in the Free world is a throw away rock song, On the Beach, Tonights the night, those are some of the best rock albums ever written.. Seriously, buy better bullshit, the stuff you have is not working out for you.

  • @Raazer u can't talk sense to douchebags like "darkcowboyhero". He is just some punk kid internet troll trying to start shit. He probably thinks Ke$ha is the best singer in the world.

  • @darkcowboyhero lofl..........that guy pwn3d you so fucking bad

  • Ha, Old Neil finally gets a Grammy Award after 40 years, while many poor talent, studio sponsored artists keep winning these phony awards....

  • I love the overlay of "angry" with an undercurrent of Love Love Love. best song easily

  • Aum Namah Shivaya...If you understand this, you "Get" this song. If you dont get Aum Namah Shivaya, you wont get this Awesome song! Keep on Rockin Neil

  • I love Neil, but this song is pure crap. Grammys mean absolutely nothing to me in terms of how i respect an artist anway. The idea that people deserve one for being snubbed in the past is pure stupidity. Just because Neil had a ton of awesome albums in the past doesn't mean he needs a trophy for a terrible song like this.

  • @PhunkYouInTheEye dude, theres no such thing as crappy music, and if there was, this would never be one.

im sorry if you were upset when your band lost, and guess what, they are all some of my favorite bands, but once you try to listen to the sadness in his voice and the efforts he did when he recorded this, you would realize he didnt win because of pitty.

this song has so many motives and messages, and its hard ro realize it at first, but this is something that goes way deeper then most songs.

  • @VolumeCenterEilat CORRECTION! Anything by Psychopathic Records is crappy music, and I should be lynched for calling it music. be thankful you've never heard of them.

  • @VolumeCenterEilat first off, i don't even know the other artists nominated for this award, nor do i care. Thousands of rock songs were recorded this year, and most of them probably incorporated more originality, creativity, and more masterful songwriting than this. If you think this is the best rock song of the year, you don't know modern rock music. and if you think this is anywhere near the top of the list of Neil Young's rock songs, you are insane. I'm willing to bet Neil would agree

  • @PhunkYouInTheEye ya, I'm pretty sure that he won this year just because they want to make up for his years before. this is not his best song. But Neil Young deserves to be rocognise.

  • Neil is a WINNIPEG icon Muthah Fuckahaaaazzzzzzz

  • This song is crap.

  • to be honest, this song is pretty bad. Sure, Neil young is amazing, but then he should get an award as an artist, and not for this song. If u people didn't know this was neil young, you would think differently, because this song sorta sucks...

  • @puglaw Very true= so much more of his work should have won a Grammy, but at the end of the day people will just remember the grammy and not the song. There's still time for that lifetime achievement award, I suspect the only reason he hasn't won it is because they know he's not finished rockin' in the free world ;)
