  • how the hell did she get "things with a rim" from the word "cup"

  • Shows that should air on GSN's daytime schedule: Match Game (Rayburn and Shafer) Family Feud (Dawson and Combs) Card Sharks (Perry and Eubanks) Blockbusters (Cullen and Rafferty) Now You See It (Narz) Password Plus Super Password Pyramid ($25,000 and $100,000) Tic-Tac-Dough (1978-1986 version) The Joker's Wild (1977-1986 version) Jeopardy! (current version before September 1997) Wheel of Fortune (current version before September 1997)
  • Mr. Clark knew beforehand this was a valid clue. Good on him.

  • Can magnets be attract-ive? Dick asks...well, that's the only word that can be used to describe the "attractive" nature of a magnet. The best clue that could have been used given the situation. Been thru this before----this is a resounding YES for a win.

  • If you listen closely I swear I could hear her say "Attractive Things" just before the buzzer went off.

  • @DDRBoi2002 Did you read the description? it is synomymous?

  • @pressmin I get that the clues could've been synonymous but they really aren't. What I was saying is looking back at the tapes they could've heard her say "Attractive Things" and given it to her because of that.

  • @DDRBoi2002 . Um, the "illegal clue" had NOTHING to do with that. It had to do with the clue of "Magnet". I hate when people make comments without knowing what they are talking about. If "attractive things" had been said AT ALL, the woman would not have won at all, but that was never even a question.

  • @TinaLand3 Wow....someone needs to chill out. You are getting bent out of shape over a gameshow that was 20 some odd years ago. I hate when people get bent out of shape over something that means nothing in their own life. Seriously...calm down...it'll be ok.

  • @DDRBoi2002 The comment was more about you spreading false information (which I hate) more than anything at all to do with this show.

  • Clark: I always get these poor jobs. (audience groans) No, no, no, WAIT A MINUTE, NOW!

    Me: Ha!

  • @FutureNewsAnchor I was like... okay, Dick's up to something! ;-)

  • attractive

    –adjective

    1. providing pleasure or delight, especially in appearance or manner; pleasing; charming; alluring: an attractive personality.

2.arousing interest or engaging one's thought, consideration, etc.: an attractive idea; an attractive price.

    3. possessing the ability to draw or pull (WINNING DEFINITION)

  • I almost got really pissed off. Magnets was a freaking BRILLIANT clue.

  • Its a Win

  • If ur the contestant tryin to guess, can't u say watever u want?? So like she can't say attract cuz she heard magnet (which wasn't part of the answer) even if the word's attractive to finally get what she was saying when the clue she got was "A Woman?"

  • @crazymuthafucka14 The contestant trying to guess can say whatever he/she wants. The buzz is only based on what the clue giver says or does that's outside the rules.

  • Was this from the same episode where Nathan Cook got buzzed for the in-chair belly dance?

  • @shawnkquinn yes it is

  • Magnets was a brilliant clue. To be honest, I'm not even sure why the judge buzzed it, even in the spur of the moment.

  • @WastedPo I can understand it because "Attractive" is not a word that is descriptive of a magnet in everyday use. The rules say that you cannot use a thing of a subject that is a part of the correct subject. Example: You cannot use Cuban to get to "Cigar" when the right answer would be "Cigarette". So the judge probably thought magnet = "Attract" not "Attractive" so that's a DQ. It's a split second decision and I think that the judge was right in both. Right to buzz, then right to reverse.

  • I thought magnet was a helluva clue. Give it to her

  • Oh boy! do I remember this one!

  • It was the right call...i do like how Dick Clark described it "Judges make swift decisions, in this case they were wrong" I think that would be the only time that lady would be happy to hear the word wrong.

  • dick clark is immortal

  • It came down to a English

dictionary and the ruling from the ruling of the $100,000 Pyramid, and she won big time, that is amazing, inteed.

  • What difference does it make if magnets can be called attractive or not? She got her to say "things that are attractive" isn't that all that matters?

  • Well she said things that "attract" and they gave her the ding for correct but the box said "attractive" which is techincally not matching but attract and attractive are same word with different suffix to desribe a different type of word. IDK

  • @cxxxviii No, they never gave her the ding. The audience just started applauding and then they hit the buzzer.

  • I don't get it (by the way I don't really watch this) why were they making a big deal over the attractive thing.

  • Magnets have an ATTRACTIVE property. You can calculate the ATTRACTIVE force between magnets. Case closed.

  • Had the category said "Things that attract people" They would have been right to buzz her. But it only said "attractive things" which is wide-open, so magnets fit the description.

  • Was that Urkel playing with the other contestant?

  • LOL! No... That was actor Nathan Cook from ABC's '80s prime time drama, Hotel. :-)

  • Nope, the late great Nathan Cook was the other celebrity.

  • Attractive things things that attract. Magnets attract, although not like the other things. Clever! I agree with the rulings!

  • A magnet can be attractive if you like the way it looks. They were right to give her the money.

  • I wonder how Dick knew the judge made a mistake?

  • @Disneydanny The judge told him. The judge can talk to Dick Clark, or perhaps gesture to him, even though the judge is off-camera. I know that on Jeopardy!, the judges and production crew gesture to Alex Trebek all the time.

  • @jeopardy60611 i thought it was neat how the judges communicated to Dick not just w/ their voicess but w/ thwe Sound effects as well

  • Im confused. She said "Things that attract, attractive things!.." so isnt that acceptable? And whether or not a magnet is considered "attractive" by looks, of course she won.

  • Well, It is kinda confusing.. but sometimes you have to list the things not describe them.. i guess.. like if adorable things was on there I could say A baby a new born kitten but I couldnt say I like them (This actually happen on Pyramid) I guess this is the same basis....

  • bigweezey, you & I might be thinking of the same incident. I rememberr one where the person doing the answering THOUGHT she had said the last clue but really hadn't & time ran out on her

  • did u also see the episode when the judges thought the woman had won by playing the music with 10 seconds left but they forgot another subject was still up?

  • i wouldnt accept that when she said magents she ment a different kind of attract and it wasnt the same as it was in the original clue

  • doesn't matter. one gave clues and the other got the right answer. if she randomly guessed it without any clues, would that be acceptable? i'm sure it would. i'm pretty sure that's happened, too.

  • 2. magnet - a characteristic that provides pleasure and attracts; "flowers are an attractor for bees"

    ***attractive*** feature, attractor, attracter, attraction

And this is why you're not the judge.

  • I'm okay with the clue being accepted, but I'm curious how do you get "Things with a rim" by saying 'a cup'? Well done...

  • On one episode of that subject, Martha Smith said "edge", which is a synonym.

  • @jdp932 It was probably a lucky guess, but cups do have rims.

  • 'Magnets'...superb clutch clue by the lady.

  • Did anyone else notice how the judge waited until AFTER the subject was guessed to buzz the clue? That's a rather impressive display of restraint on the judge's part - if she'd been buzzed right away, it would've forced them to play a make-up subject, and who knows if they would've gotten that one.

  • @Loogaroo1 I do recall an episode I saw when I was a kid where a makeup subject was played. I don't remember what the original subject was, but I recall the makeup subject was "weapons" and the clue-giver was Nypsy Russell.

  • I wonder what is more of a nail biting moment......winning the money at the very last second or having to wait until the judges decide if you got the answer in time or if you got the correct answer.

  • Dick was the master at building the tension when making the big announcement...the way he casually says "In this case he was wrong" is classic.

  • Is that mary Kadorette?

  • Yep. Mary Cadorette. :-)

  • I don't know what the big deal was....look at any physics textbook and you can read about the ATTRACTIVE force of magnets.

  • That judge was just so drunk.

  • this proves y dick is the ONLY host for pyramid.

  • Watch this video from the John Davidson version of $100,000 Pyramid: DJoEEwcCOkI

Go to 9:03. Same category and same clue (kinda). Notice the delay in the music playing after the clue was considered acceptable there. Same result.

  • is that mary cadorette from 'three;s a crowd'?

  • I recall a subject in a winner's circle that said "parts of a theater." The giver said "the actors." The buzzer went off. The ruling was later reversed by virtue of the fact that actors are IN a theater, so they can be "part" of it.

  • Here is another subject matter. in "things that you flap" The giver said "20's dresses". Buzzer went off. Later reversed she was relating to "Flappers" NOT "flap".

  • @jeopardy60611 So? Actors aren't always PARTS OF A THEATER -- they could just as easily be PARTS OF A FILM or PARTS OF A TV SHOW.

  • Actually, "attractive" is a quality..magnets attract to things....either singularly speaking or plurally, they "attract" to other things that are metal...and, there are no other words that could describe the attractive properties of a magnet, other than "attractive."

    Good call!

  • GREAT call!!!!!

  • Who are the celebrities in the parade?

  • the guy is Nathan Cook from the tv show 'hotel'.not sure of the lady celebrity.

  • This shows why poise and focus are so important. Mary didn't get rattled by the DQ buzzer; she just kept playing. Many others would have wasted time getting rattled, and the money would have been lost.

Lesson: Play now, ask questions later.

  • Amen.

  • She probably didn't even hear the buzzer in the middle of the applause; when her partner got the last category right she started to scream like they had won.

  • Actually, she didn't even known she was buzzed - notice her excitement after the final catagory. Although if she had heard the buzzer I am sure she would have stayed calm. She was a great Pyramid player.

  • @bainsey89 I would want Mary Cadorette on my side. So cool and collected.

  • Dickey's got a cold.

  • The magnet clue I was fine with, but the category I think should have been waved off was the 3rd one. The answer was STATES that end in O. She said PLACES that end in O. I know O was the main portion of the answer, but states is pretty specific.

  • I agree, was think that too. Although to be fair she would have got it in a second anyway.

  • The judges were pretty lax about things like that. As long as you got the main word, you got it right. Mary Monte's qualifying time for the $100,000 had the same situation. She said "Things in Texas" for "Cities in Texas" and got it right.

  • It's cases like this that make me disagree with the rule about buzzing irrelevant clues.

Even if magnets couldn't necessarily be attractive, she was still able to help her partner come up with "things that attract" without actually telling her any part of the answer.

  • why is it that the only celebrities they had where people whose last names started with P or R

  • During the original air week, they promoted the names of celebrities that have appeared on pyramid since it started in the 1970s at the time.

  • In the bonus round, the clue giver is told to give a list of the things that fit the subject. The apparent issue in this clip is does magnets fit the subject. For all the time that I have watched this show, that have never been an issue. Whether or not a clue fit the subject would produce endless arguements. To aviod this it appears that every clue given does fit the subject in some way. Besides any doubt about whether a clue fit the subject would be resolved in the contestant's favor.

  • This is part of why, no matter how bad or good the decision, "Pyramid" is certainly the toughest game show to officiate.

  • You're absolutely right. The judges sometimes, especially in this case, had to make a very quick decision on what was acceptable and what wasn't. The outcome was the right one though.

  • A very similar thing happened on Donny Osmond's Pyramid. The final category in the bonus round was "Fattening Things." The celebrity gave clues such as "Cakes, pies, cookies..." and the contestant kept saying "Fattening foods." Eventually, time expired, and Donny came over and told her that the category was "Fattening THINGS." Then, he surprised her by saying that the judges decided to give her the 10K. That was the right thing to do, since the contestant said the essence of the subject.

  • That's the thing that I absolutely flipping hate about the Donny Osmond Pyramid: they are so literal. It's so irritating to watch.

  • The only thing that this shows is that the judges were dumb. Another reason why the current Pyramid is inferior to old Pyramid.

  • @auburn4wins What can be fattening that is not a food? You can't make yourself fat by putting anything in you that's not food!

  • @jeopardy60611 Under fattening things, if they were simply talking about things that make a person fat, all-day television watching, lack of exercise, a polystyrene suit, those would also fit the category... whether or not they would be accepted, that's another argument entirely.

  • If the category had a specific synonym in parenthesis (e.g. "Beautiful") then "magnets" would have been buzzed. In this case, there was no direct definition for "Attractive" and therefore that clue is legal.

  • I agree with the comment above. But I agree more with the ultimate outcome of this round. I think it was the celebrity being very creative and very effective.

  • When a certain definition is not specifically stated it should count. If the subject was "Attractive Desires" then magnets would be illegal.
