Shicoff and Zancanaro evoke moving characterizations here and the singing, elegant and noble.
The set is distractingly garish and dissonant and the Violetta's mannered singing and scooping mar this performance, but who could care with such nuanced counterpoints.
How ridiculous are all these who always want to compare a singer with another one. I only get a great pleasure listening all these wonderful voices and I should be so happy if Gos had given me such a voice!Sorry I don't speak english very well. ON PEUT AIMER DES STYLES,DES EXPRESSIONS DIFFERENTES SANS JETER LE DISCREDIT SUR DE GRANDES VALEURS DE L'ART LYRIQUE;
I was initially taken aback by the lack of dynamic contrast between the phrases of the verses, which is written plainly in the score, but the warmth of the tone and the fine diction--and subtle acting--really do sell it. Great stuff.
Wonderful to hear a dark baritone even in his higher tones. On top of this he sings bel-canto both in his piano and in his forte Listen to his Tabarro fo the dramatic darkness! Great!.
So interesting how voices can change between baritone and tenor. I just heard over the weekend that Pacido Domingo has announced that he has to sing more baritone pieces now for the next five or six years. Some tenors can make good baritones then it seems. At first I thought this was a tenor, then I heard the baritone quality. Great voice

He makes a good Germont, very proper, upright, less stern than others but still not able to communicate with his son.. an emotionally stunted hypocrite. Who was the Violetta?
