  • Davvero bravo!!!

  • bravissimo... e che stupendo brano!

  • georgeous

  • Shicoff and Zancanaro evoke moving characterizations here and the singing, elegant and noble.

The set is distractingly garish and dissonant and the Violetta's mannered singing and scooping mar this performance, but who could care with such nuanced counterpoints.

  • The tenor is the awful Neil Shicoff?

  • Beautiful singing... pity about the Character portrayal... "Look at me... I can sing an aria.."

  • I adore Zancancanar's singing--so beautiful and sexy.

  • In heaven!

  • How ridiculous are all these who always want to compare a singer with another one. I only get a great pleasure listening all these wonderful voices and I should be so happy if Gos had given me such a voice!Sorry I don't speak english very well. ON PEUT AIMER DES STYLES,DES EXPRESSIONS DIFFERENTES SANS JETER LE DISCREDIT SUR DE GRANDES VALEURS DE L'ART LYRIQUE;

  • IL MEGLIO IN ASSOLUTO !!! .

  • fantastico!

  • Bravo, bravo, bravo!!!!!!!!!!

  • great...!!!

  • I was initially taken aback by the lack of dynamic contrast between the phrases of the verses, which is written plainly in the score, but the warmth of the tone and the fine diction--and subtle acting--really do sell it. Great stuff.

  • E' la migliore interpretazione per questa aria.

    Marshall

  • Fantastisch mooi geluid. Wat een bariton. Zo zijn er niet veel.

  • Oh this is wonderful!

A great voice and magistral interpretation!

  • Wunderbare Musik!

    Eine der schönsten Arien überhaupt!

    Vielen Dank für's Einstellen!

    LG

    Torsten

  • This guy is great!

  • Bravo.. top of the top

  • Bravoooooooo, Baritono is GREAAAATTTT.

¡Chapeau!

  • Que voz tan hermosa... Es indescriptible... Me ha echo llorar a mares... Que barítono... Ojalá algún día yo llegue a ese nivel...

  • complimenti....

  • questo è il baritono verdiano!!!!! grande giorgio!

  • It's nice to listen to a baritone who doesn't compress the breath and artificially darken...bravo Zancanaro!

  • @Operafiend22 So true. He has a nice open sound, rich and strong.

  • One magnificent Italian baritone. Very unfortunate he did not record a recital CD!!!

  • zancanaro 4 ever!!!

  • His voice possesses that rare combination of heft and tenderness. My favorite baritono

  • La megior "Di Provenza" e questa di Giorgio Zancanaro. Ohne zweifel, die beste. Sin lugar a dudas la mejor.

  • Bravo.

Zancanaro and Cappuccilli are my favorites baritones ever.

    Great.

  • Wonderful to hear a dark baritone even in his higher tones. On top of this he sings bel-canto both in his piano and in his forte Listen to his Tabarro fo the dramatic darkness! Great!.

  • Hearing him makes me happy

  • Di Provenza il mar, il suol

    - chi dal cor ti cancello?

Al natio fulgente sol - qual destino ti furo'?

    Oh, rammenta pur nel duol - ch'ivi gioia a te brillo';

  • resoinance!!!!!!!! voice!!!!!!

  • AWESOME! i love the brightness of his upper register. it's not foggy and unfocused like so many baritones with darker tone.

  • Thanks for posting-John

  • So interesting how voices can change between baritone and tenor. I just heard over the weekend that Pacido Domingo has announced that he has to sing more baritone pieces now for the next five or six years. Some tenors can make good baritones then it seems. At first I thought this was a tenor, then I heard the baritone quality. Great voice

  • @MISTERMORNE

in domingo's case that's very easy to explain.....he simply never was a very good tenor in the first place...

  • I don't agree. I have a dvd of his performance with Eva Marton of Turandot and he did very well. I mean, "not good" in comparison to WHO?

  • @alecs1976 The biggest outright FRAUD ever perpetrated before the opera-going public - The Topless One could never hold a candle to Corelli, DelMonaco, Tucker or Bergonzi - NEVER, in None of their shared roles!

  • @DonPaolissimo LOL, I had to think for a minute on the meaning of The Topless One. BTW, I've heard Domingo in clips from his recent Simon Boccanegra. He doesn't sound quite right in baritone roles either. The voice doesn't really have that true baritone quality.

  • @what a load of rubish - are you sureyou areon the same planet as everyoe else!!! Or course he can hold a candle to Corell, Tucker, Beronzu - he is so much better than they are!!!

  • @arc264 HAHAHAHA HOHOHO - verrry funny! You must be a stand-up comedian. The Topless Wonder could not shine Corelli's or Tucker's or Bergonzi's shoes - not when young, middle-aged, or later on. Nothing but an over-hyped mediocrity - in fact, I prefer Barry Morrell!

  • @DonPaolissimo What a nasty person you are.!!! In fact, you are downright rude, when there is no need to be. If you don't like him, then you don't have to show such rudeness, or even comment. Go away and learn some manneres!!!

  • @arc264 And, YOU are a downright IDIOT! I will express whatever opinion I feel is appropriate. You don't likt it, don't read it!!!!

  • @DonPaolissimo What a nasty person you must be!! Don't worry, I won't be reading anything else of yours. Can't be bothered with arrogant, ignorant, morons like you.

  • Zancanaro was a regular and great baritone in Munich and Vienna in the 80s, I saw him many times. This is a a wonderful interpretation.

One one occasion his father was in a performance, I forget which opera, and the audience loved GZ's aria and bravoed then his dad stood up and called out "e lui è mio figlio!" and the house went through the roof.

  • hey you all, thank you for all your comments. I didn`t realise that so much people could love this as much as I do.

    Zancanaro is outstanding.

  • Up there with the best recorded versions!

  • Many thanks to gabrielkaue for this superb posting... and to Paulo for sharing!

  • An outstanding baritone! What a depth of rich interpretation! TY gabriekaue!

  • A wonderful Artist-I could listen to his voice all day-God bless you for posting this-peace and love to you.P

  • brilliant !!

  • Wonderful, rich voice. Perfect interpretation. BRAVO.

  • I should add that it's dramatic in the best sense of the word. He knows WHAT he is singing - not just notes.

  • His first performance in Hungary was in Debrecen Csokonai Theatre in1975 June. This aria had a great success!

    Salut mon ami.

  • Zancanaro, certainly a major-league baritone in this repetoire, sings beautifully here:) --

  • This artist is the best I have heard in years. Raimondi is a bass who has no right to sing this role. My favorite is

    Capucelli.

  • Damn this is the hardest Aria I've ever had to sing, he makes it look so easy, Muy, Muy Fantastico!!!

  • May 9th: Zancanaro's 70th. Buon compleanno!

  • Che BARITONO!!!

    Bravissississimo!

  • The richness of his voice is just remarkable, coupled with the surprising brilliant glints of the top.

  • who is the tenor?I have just seen him.

Chi é il tenore?Penso di averlo gia' visto

  • Il tenore è l'americano Neil Shicoff; canta ancora in Europa.

Could you tell when and where was this performance? Zancanero is wonderful in this. I am amazed at the beauty of his voice: what a sweet, round and brilliant timbre. Bravo!

  • EXCELENTE!!!

  • Extraordinario timbre de voz.

  • GOOD~!

  • MY FAVORITE BARITONE

  • 1992 in Florance Italy live, Neil Shicoff is the tenor Gruberova was the soprano and they made a studio recording of it about the same time, in 93. Baritones favorites vary among people like say Merrill, warren, mac neil, de luca, gobbi, tibbet, all opinion anyhow and of course Ruffo. Merrill was a beautiful sound and warren, mac neil also had a mature sound like this one with Zancanaro. very good.

  • ¡Bravo! ¡Así se canta Verdi!

  • Germont really suits Zancanaro´s style and presence.

  • what production is this from?

  • who are the best baritones ? please give me a list from 1~5

  • I do not know if are the best but are real baritones: Warren, Bastianini, Stracciari, Ausensi, Louis Quilico.

  • Let's not forget Leo Nucci :)

  • Ruggero Raimondi is, in my opinion of course, the best!

  • Raimondi e basso-baritone. But I like him very much too.

  • deeply touching...

  • Zancanaro is great

  • Wonderful baritone...I loved it. I only wish he would've actually utilized the fermata at the end.

  • Wonderful After Tito Gobbi he is my Favorite Baritone...

  • shicoof is inchombrensible

  • He was younger and better in Debrecen/Hungary/ with Lella Cuberli in 1975.

  • Very very good! Bravo. If the Met only had had him in recent times. He sings better than anyone I've heard in this role there in the past ten years.

  • who is the tenor friends? :)

  • Looks like Neil Schicoff

  • yep

  • l'hai tratto dal film della traviata

  • I saw him a number of times, he always sang well, correct but without much nuance. He had a very irritating habit of continuously sawing the air with his hand accompanying his singing. Here the director has managed to get him to control that, at the end of the aria you can see a few times he stops himself just in time. He makes a good Germont, very proper, upright, less stern than others but still not able to communicate with his son.. an emotionally stunted hypocrite. Who was the Violetta?

  • I cannot believe how good he is, every nuance is heard, every note is flawless, it is pure perfection if such a thing existed, everyone attempting to sing this aria should listen to this at least once. I am a singer and when I hear this it's almost like all of the secrets for a good technique have been revealed to me, and I find myself singing better.

  • THANKS !!!! Best Wishes from Lisbon (Portugal)

  • made me cry

  • this guy is really good !!!!!!!!

  • bravo!

  • From all the tenors I heard before singing this aria my favorite was Fischer-Dieskau. BUt Zancanaro is very good too. For a real baritone singing this aria, search for MAnuel Ausensi.

  • This is not a tenor aria . It is sung by baritones.

  • this is a baritone aria. fischer-dieskau was not a tenor, but a baritone

  • Sei un ingnorante

  • parlo ad aquacun

  • be careful not to reveal much of your ignorance.

  • La Traviata always brings me to tears and whenever I hear this song I feel an urgent need to travel to "La Provence" immediately. To enjoy the lavender fields, smell the air and feast on the colours. Mr. Zancanaros voice is very beautiful. Outstanding.

    Thank you for posting.

  • Just beautiful ...brought tears to my eyes!

  • Love this voice. Similar to Wixell's voice, it "hits you between the eyes". Powerful and ringing.

    Thanks for posting.

  • GRande Maestro Zancanaro

una de las mejores arias para baritono.

  • He has a BEAUTIFUL, BEAUTIFUL VOICE! I DON´T KNOW WHY THERE IS SO FEW VIDEOS FROM HIM!!!!! 1.BASTIANINI 2 WARREN 3.... 4. ZANCANARO!!

  • Robert Merrill??

  • Milnes!!

  • B A S T I A N I N I !!!!!!!!!

  • I agree, it´s a pity there are no other videos of him.

My Favorite is also Ettore...my second choice however would be Zancanaro.

    have a nice day.

  • when was this filmed?

  • it was filmed in 1993. the video is available from NVC arts. I will get the bar code for you. Its a wonderful production. I love his voice.

  • beautiful voice!

  • phenomenal

  • That deserves better than the meager ovation it recieved!

  • you are perfectly right. That was a great performance.

  • i agree...but its too bad he turns his body away from the audience at the end. the aria was sung so well and what a beautiful voice!
