I am almost considering putting this on my mp3 player so that I can listen to it while I am trying to go to bed. Also, I just started learning to fly a glider and, as if I needed any other reason to want to eventually move up to powered aircraft...
At least a few loyalists remember that the Mustang was a "never could be" until the installation of the Rolls Royce Merlin manufactured and installed by Packard here in the US--not a bad way to produce the preeminent fighter of all time-so when you get those goosebumps just remember that the sound came from a British engine--
they used those merlins in the old unlimited hydroplane boats, ill never forget the sound. they called em thunder boats for good reason. detroit river has a few sunk merlins on the bottom near bellisle.
All Mustangs were powered by Merlins except a very few Allison powered A models. In the US the Merlins were built under a license agreement with Rolls Royce by Packard after a deal for Ford to build them fell through. They were called Packard Merlins.
@Gmissile ...the A-10 is not a fighter( A for Attack, F for fighter)...and the P-51(P for Pursuit) was in fact aimed to gain superiority in the sky, to neutralize the enemy activity.Against enemy armor...in SPR for sure ;-)
@kaa13 ---Thank you. I didn't know that there would be a quiz. As a non-USAF kinda guy (Navy), I used "fighter" loosely and generically. Can you ever forgive me?
What is "SPR"? It's late,I'm tired and can't psych it out.

PS: I still think the P-51D is the most beautiful prop driven aircraft EVER. The old Navy Corsair is also Cool, but comes in at #2.
@Gmissile Mustang, without a doubt and of course the Corsair and Spitfire have to tied. It's hard to choose in terms of handsome good looks but the mustang was without question king of sky over Europe and the Pacific. Even taking the jet Messerschmidt into account.
Rankings are artificial & dont tell the real story. Spitfire, Hurricane & Mustang were all legends. Hurricane I think had more kills & were made in greater quantities than the Spitfire (easier to make) Spitfire was faster almost as good in a dogfight & used well for moral. Mustang was the newest of the three & could escort a squadren of B17's to the target then defend them against 109's something the other two never had the range to do.
I remember reading that they didn't have the advertised range, because they would run off of thier main tanks first to lighten them up in case of a dog fight, then drop thier half empty wing tanks when they got over enemy territory...
hoolius, I believe you were right the first time - I have read accounts that the 1650-7 did initially have 1,490 hp. It may have upgraded to 1,650 later on.
oh yes, it definitely had the speed of the Spitfire re840, although the engines were similar Rolls Royce Merlins, it's top speed was 437 mph, about 80 mph faster than the Spit.
My mother's uncle fought in Europe, he used to tell us stories when the P-47's and P-51's were called in to lend close air support. Can't imagine what an entire squad on a strafing run would sound like.
I bet It would sound awesome!!! Makes you wonder why some film director doesnt include an extended strafing type scene eh? Band of Brothers only included what they call a "beauty Pass" of two Mustangs and Private Ryan only a short clip at the end, but the attack in Empire of the Sun is perhaps the best in recent years.
EOTS did have some great Spielberg scenes in it, as you said. "Hart's War" also had a short clip of a 332 FG Mustang bringing down a FW 190 I believe, over a POW camp. Movie starred Bruce Willis.
@PaddyPatrone The P-51 D usually used a Packard V-1650-7 liquid-cooled supercharged V-12, 1,490 hp
And the P-51 H usually used a Packard V-1650-9 liquid-cooled supercharged V-12, 1,490 hp, but Rolls Royce, and Pratt & Whitney also made engines for them.
@recreatedtiger The P51H was already in service in the Aleutians in '45 but didn't see combat. It wasn't deemed necessary in the ETO nor was the B29! No one ever mentions THAT little tid bit. The P51D was successfully tested with a throttleable rocket motor to meet the Me262 on a more equal footing. The H model with that same rocket would have matched the Me262's top speed and totally outmaneuvered it as well! Another "What If" that would have guaranteed the U.S. winning the war in Europe.
@PaddyPatrone the P-51 made in Michigan made by Ford used a Packard and i was able to get up close and personal with one able to look at engine and even taxi to runway but then me and pilot switched and he took off

Man, I didn't make the ranking. Just talking about that.
My favorite fighters are:
P-47 (USA)
Spitfire (UK)
La-7 (URSS)
BF-109G (Germany)
A6M5 Zero (Japan)
Macchi Folgore (Italy)
squatch4ever 2 years ago
what about focke wulf ? eh ;) but indeed nice planes :)
dutchforces 2 years ago
sure that's one of the best fighters of the ww2
Another great fighter was the P-39 Airacobra. doted with an aerodinamic design and a powerful cannon
squatch4ever 2 years ago
You dont here me say it is not on the list of the best of ww2, but i dont think it's the No.1...
You must also not forget the Focke Wulf was a very inovative design.
dutchforces 2 years ago
yeah, but anyway is not easy to say what is the best fighter of the wwII. But the P-51 was fast and maneuverable, well armed and aerodynamic
squatch4ever 2 years ago
dutchforces, you can check on this ....
but didn't the "inovative design" of the FW-190 lead the U.S to designing the F8F Bearcat?
