@loutyr What makes me wonder is how he is 6'5 and so muscular and he fights at heavyweight, which I think was 200 pounds? And Felix Savon too. 6'6 with biceps that look like hammers and fights at heavy instead of super heavy.
Vysotsky beat Stevenson on points in the first fight in Cuba during the “Kardova Kardin” . Although the score was 3:2, the pace of the fight forced Teofilo to take two necessary breaks to retie his gloves. The second time was at a class A International tournament in Minsk, in March 1976. In each stanza, Stevenson took a count while clearly hurt, in the final three minutes Vysotsky knocked him out. He was a great amateur- as a pro at that time he would have been average.
@jmwwd.. Maybe youre right, but you'll agree that few amature bouts are settled by knockout, but Sevenson had an incredible record in that respect.. I really wanted him to turn pro, it would have made an interesting era even more so..

Stevenson could have gone pro - he had to leave the country but chose not to. Stevenson disdains the business of boxing. Obviously he was a great boxer and I like that he retired in top health. He does not think he has anything to prove to the professional boxing world. Neither do I.
So what's your point? That Castro's evil? Gee, thanks for letting me know Mr. Redundant. Besides that "fact", he didn't go pro not because Castro didn't allow it, he just didn't. Period. It was his own personal choice, and I'm glad. Back then the boxing business was a dirty one, and he had already made his mark. A fine athlete, through and through. The point is that he couldn't go pro either way. Whether he wanted to or not. Even if Castro let him, he would've owned him, so there you go. And that's what's sad, cuz he would've kicked everyones ass, and could've been the best ever. Instead of being this 'true' but mostly forgotten athlete....

I'm no communist or Fidel supporter; but truth is in this crazy mixed up world; there's something for everyone. I've seen videos and heard Stevenson speak and he just made his decision.
What insecurity? I'm not a boxer! I love to watch boxing! And Stevenson was one of the BEST. And because of POLITICS he was NOT ALLOWED to be the best on a WORLD stage. That is OUR loss. Had he gone pro, the boxing world would have been different YES! People would still know who he is. NO ONE under 40 even remembers this guy....
Tvlizzard. Who ever told you that politics had to do with it?? He didnt become pro cause he didnt want to! You know how many international fights he had a lot, he could had stayed in any country and he dicided not to.
Let's see, I can continue doing what I LOVE, be recognized by the ENTIRE WORLD, provide for my family for generations, and have a lasting legacy for decades and decades. OR just decide not to. Hmmmmmmmmmm. I have a one word answer to you sir: BULLSHIT....
Dude in what world are you living in? you think by him turning pro people werent going to know who he was? and by making millions of dollars he wasnt going to provide his family compared to the 50 dollars a month that Castro was paying him plus a used russian car and an old house without A/C. obviously you're not cuban and dont have a clue about it.
Hey Idiot. NO ONE KNOWS WHO HE IS NOW. The only people who know who he is are those who either read history books OR people that are OVER 40 that saw him. And I'm glad I'm not Cuban, cuz I'd take doing what I loved and getting paid for it OVER being told what to do and getting 50 bucks and a shitty used russian car. Who the hell would want that? YOU? This poor guy was robbed of a chance at greatness cause of the shitty politics of CUBA. THANK YOU CASTRO...
Again, your just plain stupid. He was one of the BEST EVER. You think if he had a chance to box in America or Europe he wouldn't have thrived? You're retarded. Castro kept him there cuz he's a selfish moronic ruler. We lost a chance to see what could've been. Thank you Fidel Dumbass....Stevenson could've been the best ever, now no one under 40 even remembers him....yeah that's good, jackass.....
There is no point. You act Like Teo's some kind of simple pet dog: feed him, give him water, and he'll be happy. Bullshit. He knew he was good--better than good, and he deserved the chance to prove it on a world stage. And do you think he wanted to have that chance? Fuck yes! He surely had the desire to go further. And that's not an american desire or a european desire, that's a human desire. Castro fucked him, and fucked us all....
Pro boxing in America is a hole different ballgame then amature fighting. All respect to this cubing boxer though. I admit I don't know him but you can't say based on amature fights that he could be one of the best ever.
Uh, yes you can. All you have to do is look at him. This guy was a beast, and took his craft way seriously. Everyone amateur or pro back then knew that if/when he went pro, he was going to destroy. But thanks to politics, it never happened..
you can't say based on amateur fights, but you do can say from that MONSTROUS right hand.
Holy Shitttt, nobody had that kind of power in the pros. I mean, watching this 3 round fight, I really feared for the brazilian guy's life, he almost got his head ripped off.
listen friend, this conversation is not new. this MONSTER Stevenson, and other "recent" Cuban heavies like Savon and Balado, spent their unlucky careers whooping future Pro boxing champions in the amateur tournaments. the list is longgggggggggg.
and the did it without the cheeseburgers, the milkshakes, the fancy gyms, and the 10 million dollar trainers.
Who did they defeat? Even if they did defeat somebody, the amatures is a complete different game. Most of the future pro's also are young and undefelopped then while guys like Savon stayed in the amatures when they had lots of expericence and more power cause they were older.
and matey, even if he went to your stupid ass country he would've made millions too....the only politic that kept him down was HIS OWN....if he could've left, he would've left....'nuff said.
Stevenson was a BAD-ASS...too bad he couldn't have turned pro (a Stevenson/Ali in his prime or Foreman in his prime, or Lyle in his prime would've been unreal to watch)
So.....You're sayin that being born into a communist society makes him arrogent and ignorant? Makes no difference to his personality what pollitical system he lives by.
Stevenson is an arrogant, ignorant product of his heritage, his culture and the communist Godless sick system he was born in and serves his masters well.
Heil Hitler-
Death to the Atheist subhuman mongrels known as socialists, atheists, intellectuals, communists, and "progressives"!!
Hate to let you know this but "would've" DOES NOT COUNT. He NEVER fought ALI so TEO isn't the best. Foreman in his prime "would've" crushed Teo Stevenson and ALI beat the snot out of him, so your theory is CRAP. Unless they fight YOU WILL NEVER KNOW!! So thank CASTRO for that. Too bad...
You are dreaming! If an amateur Russian 5'9 beat stevenson twice and knocked him down once what makes you think he would have beaten the best heavyweight champ of all time!
Ali wasnt the greatest. You have allowed yourself to be fooled into believing that simply because Ali claimed himself the greatest. Ali is top five, but not the greatest.
Facts? Stevenson never fought Ali... So, there is no "facts" to compare the two boxer. Except, maybe, the fact that Stevenson won 6 times more fights than Ali (who is a great, great fighter, there is no doubt)
Alheerdt: So if he won 6 times more than Ali its amateur fighting get that in your head, Heavyweights fight once a year, stevenson was only trained to box 3 rounds he would have needed at least 3 years of pro training before fighting Ali if he wanted to make it all the way, besides stevenson got knocked out by 5'9 amateur russian so what make you think he was going to beat the best heavyweight of the world!
By the way, Ali also lost to a lot of fighters. As you said, Stevenson fought a lot more people than Ali, so the chance of losing a fight is much greater. Do you know that they are really good friends now and Stevenson has come to the USA with a special visa just to visit his friend Muhammad. That's pretty cool, isn't it?
The agree was to fight 3 rounds daily during five days , exactly the way that Stevenson needs, Stevenson never was Knocked out by Visotski, the russian boxer
Pinero: let me refrase it KNOCKED DOWN which to me its the same thing. Now what kind of fight that is to fight 3 rounds daily for five days like you say only Castro would come up with some shit like that!
There is no doubt that Stevenson was one of the greatest boxers ever. If he had become pro, eventually he would have been one of the best also. It's moronic to say he was just a good amateur. There's a reason why Ali refused to fight him: he knew he could had lost to an amateur. He lost fights, so did Ali, Louis, Tyson and every boxer ever.
aguada21: Who ever told you Ali refused to fight Stevenson????? Castro was the one who didn't allowed Stevenson to fight Ali.by the way stevenson wasnt prepared to go to 15 rounds when his whole life he fought 3 rounds.
Actually you are wrong. The Cuban government said yes if the fight would be within amateur rules and Ali's promoters said "he had nothing to win and a lot to lose." Ali was amazing, no doubt, but if Stevenson would have trained for a few years to adapt to the professional style, who knows what could had happen. One thing is for sure, he was an unbelievable boxer, tremendous skill and a hammer in his right hand.
Stevenson did not defect. He did not defect because meaning so he would have had to turn pro. To defect and turn pro would have exposed Stevenson for what he was. A real good AMATURE. Never mind Ali, he would have never gotten that far, Jerry Quarry would have sent him crying back to Fidel with a left hook stuck up his ass.
I think Ali would've taken him. Teofilo is basically coming forward , use the jab to find the range for his right. I think Ali's flexibility and hand speed would've really fustrate Teofilo. Teofilo's height and reach might've gave Ali trouble but I think Ali could've worked around that. He was quicker.
A 5'9 Amateur Russian beat Stevenson twice and knocked him down once, he was just an "amateur" now Imagine what Ali one of the greatest heavyweights ever would have done to Stevenson, thats common sense!
don't get me wrong, teofilo was the greatest amateur of all time. but jorge luis gonzalez and many of the soviet bloc heavyweights had good long careers in the amateurs. when they came over here, they got beat up. and don't bring up all the russian heavyweights now b/c they did not come up having a very long, almost exclusive amateur career before turning pro
anyone that thinks this guy could have beaten ali is out of their mind. there is a huge difference between a 3 round amateur fight and a 15 round fight. this guy was knocking out AMATEURS in 3 round fights, not professional heavyweights from the best era of heavyweights as ali did in the 70s.
tyson had no chanse in fight wioth this man because he was not dull puncer but very wise boxer but ali was so foxy that he alwayes find a way to overcame any fighter.

Ali should thank Castro , since he didnt allow Stevenson to fight against Ali. What would have happen if both pact a match in three rounds.

Facts? Stevenson never fought Ali... So, there is no "facts" to compare the two boxer. Except, maybe, the fact that Stevenson won 6 times more fights than Ali (who is a great, great fighter, there is no doubt)
alheerdt 3 years ago
No disrespect but Ali would have murdered this man. No contest!
Stevenson was a great fighter.
Audelia 3 years ago
Nmmmm.. "No contest"?! What you do we call a "chute" (kick) in Brazil. You just cannot know this. They never fought and never will.
alheerdt 3 years ago
Alheerdt: So if he won 6 times more than Ali its amateur fighting get that in your head, Heavyweights fight once a year, stevenson was only trained to box 3 rounds he would have needed at least 3 years of pro training before fighting Ali if he wanted to make it all the way, besides stevenson got knocked out by 5'9 amateur russian so what make you think he was going to beat the best heavyweight of the world!
nikitobu 3 years ago
By the way, Ali also lost to a lot of fighters. As you said, Stevenson fought a lot more people than Ali, so the chance of losing a fight is much greater. Do you know that they are really good friends now and Stevenson has come to the USA with a special visa just to visit his friend Muhammad. That's pretty cool, isn't it?

I never said he would beat Ali. What i said is that nobody can know this.
sediclahee 3 years ago
The agree was to fight 3 rounds daily during five days , exactly the way that Stevenson needs, Stevenson never was Knocked out by Visotski, the russian boxer
pinero69 3 years ago
Pinero: let me refrase it KNOCKED DOWN which to me its the same thing. Now what kind of fight that is to fight 3 rounds daily for five days like you say only Castro would come up with some shit like that!
nikitobu 3 years ago
I have a lot of respect for what stevenson did but you have to face the facts, Ali was the greates boxer in his class.
Manny0728 3 years ago
There is no doubt that Stevenson was one of the greatest boxers ever. If he had become pro, eventually he would have been one of the best also. It's moronic to say he was just a good amateur. There's a reason why Ali refused to fight him: he knew he could had lost to an amateur. He lost fights, so did Ali, Louis, Tyson and every boxer ever.
aguada21 3 years ago
Ali didnt refuse to fight him. Stevenson himself rejected the idea of going pro
elekupat 3 years ago
aguada21: Who ever told you Ali refused to fight Stevenson????? Castro was the one who didn't allowed Stevenson to fight Ali.by the way stevenson wasnt prepared to go to 15 rounds when his whole life he fought 3 rounds.
nikitobu 3 years ago
Actually you are wrong. The Cuban government said yes if the fight would be within amateur rules and Ali's promoters said "he had nothing to win and a lot to lose." Ali was amazing, no doubt, but if Stevenson would have trained for a few years to adapt to the professional style, who knows what could had happen. One thing is for sure, he was an unbelievable boxer, tremendous skill and a hammer in his right hand.
aguada21 3 years ago
oh yeah? your wrong man ali going to play him right kool010

Stevenson did not defect. He did not defect because meaning so he would have had to turn pro. To defect and turn pro would have exposed Stevenson for what he was. A real good AMATURE. Never mind Ali, he would have never gotten that far, Jerry Quarry would have sent him crying back to Fidel with a left hook stuck up his ass.
mfp508 3 years ago
I think Ali would've taken him. Teofilo is basically coming forward , use the jab to find the range for his right. I think Ali's flexibility and hand speed would've really fustrate Teofilo. Teofilo's height and reach might've gave Ali trouble but I think Ali could've worked around that. He was quicker.
ReeseMac 3 years ago
A 5'9 Amateur Russian beat Stevenson twice and knocked him down once, he was just an "amateur" now Imagine what Ali one of the greatest heavyweights ever would have done to Stevenson, thats common sense!
nikitobu 3 years ago
Stevenson is the best boxer ever!
lordtrax8 3 years ago
don't get me wrong, teofilo was the greatest amateur of all time. but jorge luis gonzalez and many of the soviet bloc heavyweights had good long careers in the amateurs. when they came over here, they got beat up. and don't bring up all the russian heavyweights now b/c they did not come up having a very long, almost exclusive amateur career before turning pro

anyone that thinks this guy could have beaten ali is out of their mind. there is a huge difference between a 3 round amateur fight and a 15 round fight. this guy was knocking out AMATEURS in 3 round fights, not professional heavyweights from the best era of heavyweights as ali did in the 70s.
