Isnt this conservation of angular momentum?? mvr is a constant, since m and r are decreasing( mass and radius ) velocity has to increase to keep it a constant!!.. can anyone tell me if m right or wrong?
It goes faster in motion because the 2 ends where fires are melting the candle wax are holding melted wax providing the ends the right mass to make it swing, as the melted waxes are falling due to their weight and the movement of the swing, the swing itself will also swing even faster because of the waxes.
one side of the candle burned rapidly at the beginning, evening out the mass on both sides rather quickly. When the difference in mass became zero, at that exact point and because they were already rocking up and down. when the candle loses some of its mass on one side it would rock even faster because of 'nothing' on the other side holding it back to do so. and so on.
I shall ruin it for the rest and share the secret. If you have ever held a candle tilted the fire touches the candle wax more creating more wax. The candle originally started off uneven. The fire on the right side was touching the candle less while the left was burning up more wax. Due to the wax dripping the focuser effect occurred. the fire would continue until both sides have equal amounts.
the candle momentum doesn't pick up until the wax starts to drip from both sides on the low cycle. each time a side drops it loses a little mass (the wax dripping), thus making it lighter then the other side. in which the heavy side will by pulled down by gravity. This is like giving it a little push every time a side losses mass. less mass + same amount of energy = more momentum (speed). Plus you could factor in that as the candle loses mass it is getting shorter. making each end closer to...
I never expected this candle swing to pick up this much angular momentum! I just thought it would stabilize as the side pointing downwards would loose wax at a greater rate, thus decreasing the mass on said side. However, later on in the vid one sees how the wax is only leaving when the candles are closest to the paper (just before being dragged up again). What this does is make the candle lighter on one side before it swings up on that side. This constant weight difference seems to be the key!
the left flame is more at an angle and is burning the candle wich is making it melt and even out on both sides the right flame isnt at enough of an angle and isnt burning any of the candle
@IndomitusLupus Ha Ha... It really was quite simple :) Too simple to understand. I found the difference in weight due to wax dripping reason much simpler. I find that the center of mass keeps changing and thus the heavier half gravitates... which then gives equal and opposite reaction on the other side and then it goes on....
It's quite simple guys. Fire is exothermic. That means it is giving off energy which increases the speed and motion of the molecules in the air. The now more excited air molecules on top begin to rise and the cooler air molecules below the candle begin to become excited. They then too begin to rise raising the entire candle (air flow.) The other side is trying to create equilibrium. Since movement affects fire intensity, it never can stay constant enough to find equilibrium. Hope this helps.
looks like at the beginning the left side was heavier, when it was lit up, the flame was directly into the candle so it got hotter faster therefor it lost weight until it was balanced. I believe the side that is down will melt faster and it will go up and then down and so on
I don't think it moves because of loosing the wax weight I think it moves to release the wax weight. When it picks up speed its because the candle had burnt off it bucket shape and allowed the wax to drip out faster.
wtf, the bug appears out of nowhere... the candle swoops down and when it lifts up the bug is there. was it in the candle? or was the vid just paused somehow.
what happens is one side is facing down so the flame goes more into the wax which loses weight for that side eventually burning so much wax that it is even and randomly swing u can tell that one sie burns more wax look at the wax pools in 1:15
I think it is the upward flames on the two sides of the candle providing altenate download forces to drive the candle swinging. Since the candle is balanced and the friction on the pivot is very small, energy loss due to friction is very little. Therefore energy is accumulated gradually, and the amplitude gradually builds up.
Look how at time2:25 a fruitfly makes a fatal jump into the hot wax and gets mummificated alive. This experiment proves that fruitflies can be killed with fruitsmelling candles. Although I use axe with a lighter cause that's more efficient.
Because the air above the flame is heated, it starts rising. Floating fluids (like air) cause underpressure. So there is underpressure above the flame. This causes the imbalance. It's not because the candles drip or burn wax
The explination that the candles drip or burn wax at the lowest point is not true cause the weightloss is to small to let the candle swing that fast and in the beginning of the experiment the moment the drops fall are showing this explination is false. Look at the flames at their highest point to see how the flames want to flow in the stream of the air.
Another explination is that hundreds of fruitflies jump over causing the indifference in weight.
@Justupursun Because the wax falls at the lowest point, it increases the POTENTIAL energy of the higher end of the candle, which is what causes the rocking motion. You could also say that the energy exchange occurs in RESONANCE with the rocking motion, which probably contributes to the apparent acceleration.
I think its because as the wax drips off at the lowest point, that portion of the candle loses mass. As the one half losses mass the other half becomes heavier by comparison each time, which causes more energy to be put into the system, and thus it increases in speed and height.
@ezasad If you look closely at the left end in the beginning, the flame is touching the wax and the right side's isn't. Whichever side is lower will have more contact with the wax, burning it quicker and equalizing the candle.
Once it's swinging, you're right, each side loses a little mass from dripping, and can only drip it out when it's near the bottom, making it swing.
@ezasad The heavier side drops down, and because of this and the fact that the flame wants to go directly upwards, as the heavier side is down more was is exposed to the candle's flame. Melting the heavier side faster so long as it is weighed down.
@ezasad When you figure out the experiment, tell me about you conclusion, please. I think that works so because the lost of mass in apropriate time from each side of the candle, but I'm not sure. The lost of mass is so small. Anyaway... I'm not sure as I wrote...
Sorry for the "bad enlish". I hope you have understood me.
My guess is that the lower end of the candle is letting the flame rise upward into the was, then melting it, which then decreases the weight at the end, then it keeps repeating itself and builds engergy and keeps rocking.......

(see previous comment) the fulcrum causing it to rock faster. I would say both factors are acting on the candle causing it to rock.
