  • Listening to upright players from that period (late 50's early 60's), the upright bassits of that era weren't as technically advanced as they are today, and they only really had comfortable access to the low and middle range--no thumb position stuff. So they had to be more creative in a limited range on the instrument. Electric players arent challenged nearly as much by range as upright players. P.C. was also one of the first to solo cleanly and fluidy with the bow. good luck w thatone elcplyrs

  • Sounds great. Im primarily an upright player and P.C. is one of my favorite bassists of all time. I thinks its great that electric players listen to some of the older upright players because you learn the tradition of the bass and whats been done before. continued...

  • love it

  • Thanks for your interest. I transcribed this back in the 70's before tabs were invented.

I may not be of much help seeing as I only know how to read music.

    But thanks again.

  • @dowsemeister hey, could you send me the sheets for this? I would appreciate it.

  • is there anyway I could get tabs for this?

  • @dennisisbigger sorry, I only know the music. Tab didn't exist when i wrote this out.

    Thanks for your interest though.

  • waaaay nice swingin man!

  • @bassbandlover thankyou!!

  • I hate purists who says "jazz is meant to be played with an upright, that isn't real jazz". I'm a bassist myself and I live both electric bass and upright, and jazz can be played even with a mandolin, a banjo or a balalaika. You can hear the feel jazz to it no matter how it sounds. It's like the "bass is played with fingers, picks are for losers" argument. Don't become snobs and enjoy that sweet bass solo. (Nobody told Jaco Pastorius he didn't play jazz, true? So there you have it.)

  • @BassGrindcore thanks for the comments. I like the Jaco comment excellent!!

I checked out your videos...great playing!! You are a gifted musician to be able to play that stuff, excellent

  • it's from blue train, i listened to that record earlier today, it's an outstandig solo, style, grace, love ...RIP Mr. Chambers!

  • @Monkeygroover Yes Blue train...Thanks for commenting

  • Hot man... Everyones stoped soloing like Paul, Ray and thats really ashame cause they put more feeling into there solos and they told stories... Iam defentetly not saying todays playeers solo badly i love stanly and christian i just think that this beautiful kinda bass solo isent heard as much anymore and thats a shame

  • Cool man. Now do it on a coffin.

But srsly, sounds good man, keep it up!

    Paul Chambers is the man

  • lefties ROCCCCCCK!~ great smooth groove dude! best..

  • A very nice bass solo. Beautiful deep, rich tone, so smooth. A real pleasure to listen to.

  • Thanks kenyar0.

  • wow it sounds deep>

  • is this the blue train solo?

  • Yes, I think it is the Blue Trane (train) solo. I copped the solo so long ago I can't quite remember what album it was on.

  • very nice solo!!!

and music is in your soul

  • love the soul station quotes!

  • Hey man this is super tasty playing. I love the tone and attack (and it's damned close to an upright) and the leisurely way you play this. And it sounds like BASS, not wanna be sax/guitar noodling.

  • thanks jrutid, I was a wannabe upright player years back but had to settle for electric cause of being left handed.

I borrowed some of Hank Mobley's tenor sax lines though for the solo.

  • I just love the way players from PC's day used to solo. LIKE BASSPLAYERS and mostly at the fat end of the bass. As much as I love some of the pyrotechnics of today's players I think a solo like this reaches the soul more.

  • I appreciate your comment. I agree totally.

The pyrotechnics I dig as well...just can't play that fast.

    Cheers

  • wow man great job :)

this would sound great on double bass aswell!

  • beauty Bass Solo!!

    Bass gitar is the best:P

  • Amazing playing. I just posted my first vid of my fretles playing...not as good as yours I am afraid...then again I am just making it up as I go.I would love your opinion as you play so well.

  • nice video. idk why everyone's arguing about upright vs electric... i mean they're both basses with different sounds. but any bass player should know to respect the upright cuz its old school and goes back to the start of bass playing. i wish i could play upright. anyway sweet video dude.

  • Cheers! JCRx45. Thanks for your comment.

I actually enjoy reading all the arguments.

Negative comments are not always bad...They help me open up and push the my own limits.

  • man, its just not the same without the upright

  • that bass has a great sound

  • This solo is from Blue Train.

  • whta is this song called

  • I can't remember! I believe it's from a Coltrane album or maybe Hank Mobley. I learned it 20 years ago

    Cheers!

  • Thanks for the support everyruddyword for the electric bass, I didn't mean to start a war between electric and acoustic, but I actually would've prefered playing it on upright. Paul Chambers is my hero.

  • That is some load of crap you spill there, mate. I pity your ignorance.

  • The problem is that your opinion, although entitled to, shows a great lack of insight and feeling for the instrument. Electric bass is NOT a replacement for an upright one, they are two totally different instruments with their own characteristics. Wood bass has a warm, analog, non-sterile sound, which makes it appropriate for styles that thrive on athospheres like that, e.g. jazz.

  • Therefore it is perfectly reasonable to suggest that a piece that originally was meant for that totally different sound of wood bass will sound better on the actual instrument.Of course, people should not take this too far and become snobbish, 'cause of course jazz CAN be played with electric bass.

To say things like 'an electric bass is far more pleasing to the ear' and 'upright basses are obsolete' and extending that comment to anything more than pure personal opinion, now THAT is pathetic.

  • You and a million other people dont appreciate the sounds that come out of an upright bass. It is far much harder to reach some notes and upright is a classic. And I still disagree that "'an upright bass' which in my opinion is till a very dull instrument"....HATER

  • everyruddyword, you are an idiot. You're not even properly defending your argument, and you know why, BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE ONE.

  • That previous response was in reply to Klewt

  • @gonzalezanthony32494 the perfect agument to this, respectfully is to go tosong bye bye blackbird and see something you will never see in an electric. Niels henning ppederson and charli Mcbride on dueling upright basses. Ypur lucky to get this

  • yeah, double bass would be nicer.

can u put one up with some piano or guitar or something next time

  • interesting, but it should be played on an acoustic bass to sound really good... i don't know for the original, I think a faster tempo would have been better here

  • Thanks for the comment. I agree about the acoustic bass...I don't have one but I just love playing his solos!!!I did slow it down, although the original is a lazy medium tempo blues.

  • I'm an upright player and an electric bass player and I believe a solo like this sounds good on both instruments. I also believe that electric bass gets a bum rap in jazz most of the time. Even though its true that the upright bass creates more much of a multi-tiered timbre than electric bass, I've always thought that true swing came from the hands (and heart). I know guys that can make a rubber band swing.

  • I say (for whatever my lowly opinion is worth)- let electric bass players have their opportunity to swing as well! Way to go dowsemeister!

  • Nice, good tone.
