Many economists would argue that it was important to keep GM and Chrysler alive (and Ford too -- which received government support in other ways) in order to preserve jobs in this country and our manufacturing capability. Especially while we were in a free falling economic collapse. The result of letting these two giant corporations fail could have been economically disastrous. SAAB is a basket case and it only sold 94,000+ cars last year. It can be argued that it was too much of a niche vehicle to make it in today's environment even if GM hadn't done its bland magic. But I know there are other niche vehicles, like Bentley, that have done well. Then again, even Porsche is struggling. A real combination of the economy with the former GM management's inclination to stamp out the uniqueness of everything they touch. Let's hope Whitacre gives his enginners support.

interesting. I saw some of the concepts for the new Cadillacs, a coupe and a couple of sedans. They look great. I think GM is going to surprise people. They have great engineers, great designers, good manufacturing capability but they've lacked the executive commitment to quality and had lost their boldness of vision. Let's hope they've learned from this near death experience and forge ahead with great products that people really want. Not just cars that people buy because of loyalty.

While the jury is still out about GM and Chrysler's ability to pay back their loans, GM has a better shot, and trying to rescue part of the backbone of American manufacturing isn't a bad thing. I'm all for giving them a shot and hoping for the best. Government's around the world have stepped in to rescue their own industries. No reason the US should have sat on the sidelines. Without absolving GM for its past sins, it was the right thing to do.

Would have been far better to let them go, sell off the assets and let some young, ambitious, innovative young bloods come in a scoop up what they need to start up new auto companies. Save yourself all the fees and taxes if you bring it back. Then, bring it back and if you really want to keep it, tell them to refund the difference between a demo model and the original new price--- or, you want your money back. See how serious they really y are about this scam.

best part of this commercial is that GM really does have (for the most part) the portfolio to compete with anyone now. All they need to do is revampAveo, Cobalt, and Colorado. Those are the only models that they might see coming back. But luckily Aveo and Cobalt are either being redesigned or replaced by better products within the year. As for Colorado, it must be doing alright if GM isn't touching it.
