Roy fought a great fight, but it was not the mastery of James Toney as so many put it. I did not know he ran so much, I mean If he wasn't throwing those magnifcent hands, he was running and if he wasn't running, he was diving in for a hold. Just not as masterful as I had been lead to beleive. still a great victory, and followed the game plan to the tee.
Jones had athleticism on his side here...but I think time has proved that Toney had permanent fundamentals in his game, he can do everything. Toney had developed bad habits outside the ring by the time this fight took place. All his skills could do nothing against a primed Jones and his otherworldly athleticism/cute skills. Damn, I'd pay heaps for a primed 'Toney vs Jones/ Hagler'.
@GMFRECARGADO Yeah, I know what you mean. I mean, all he did was win world titles in 4 different weight classes, secure a fighter of the decade award for the '90s by the Boxing Writers Association, become the 1st fighter in 106 years to move up from middleweight to win a heavyweight title, become the ONLY man to start out at jr. middleweight to win a heavyweight title, and score God only knows how many millions in the process. Why even waste you time with a career like that? lolol. owned...
I cant believe you think that, why is he considered the greatest fighter who lived then...still to this day, you are in the real minority there mate. Ray is the greatest Welterweight of all time and the greatest Middleweight of all time, the opne perfect fighter, now Jones has slowed down we can see his alarming flaws, Ray had none.
If we think about Jones at this point in his career, we have to place him amongst the top ten best fighters of all time, skill wise plus punching power, he is second only to Sugar Ray Robinson and he is one in a million, literally.
I don't know who was better between Ray and Roy because Ray fought in the 40's and 50's but I believe Roy was better. I could be wrong but Roy was so good it's hard to believe someone was actually quicker and a harder puncher than a prime Roy.
The reason Ray Robinson is generally considered the no1 P4P and greatest fighter that lived is because he didnt have a weakness, he was flawless. Robinson at his peak, which was actually at Welterweight was the perfect fighter. Ray hit just as fast and as hard as Roy, but had a bigger heart and at the time one of the best chins in all of boxing, Roy fails in the chin department. I dont think there will be another SSR. "if you were able to ask god to make a perfect fighter...it would be SRR"
You are one dumb kid! I see why you got 3 thumbs down, because of that retarded comment! If Ray Robinson was so "flawless" and didn't have a "weakness," then why did he lose (9x)? Common sense would tell your dicksucking ass that if a boxer was flawless in the ring, his or her record would be unblemished! You are dumb!
listen fuck head sugar ray fought in 200 bouts and won 173 of them. almost all of his losses came towards the end of his career when he was in his forties. He kept fighting because he kept going broke. Even Ali called him the greatest ever. know your history faggot pussy
You obviously havnt seen ray in his prime. he fought guy every month and sometimes only two weeks after a fight and still tore them apart with incredible handspeed, power footspeed and defense.
The Welterweight SRR was as fast as Roy if not quicker, he was infact at his peak at Welterweight. Ray is smaller than Roy but P4P hits just as hard, no question. Roy a former MW went to LH and could KO them, well Ray went to MW from WW which is the same jump in weight and Ray was still KO'n MW like Fulmer who had never been KO'd before, so P4P Ray could hit just like Roy and Roy also slowed down when he went to LH as Ray slowed down at MW.
i would stil give roy the edge in hand speed and power (that one punch body shot knock out was just brutal). ray was a better fighter. but i just love watching prime roy more than maybe any other fighter, when he opens up its just stunning.i really hope roy quits now. he still has great hand speed but i don;t want him to get hurt. srr went on way to long as well. if only fighters knew when to quit....
True, when he opened up he is awesome and his punches in bunches is all from SRR, Ray really wrote the book on combination punching and doing it with power. In my opinion Roy should have stayed SM weight rather than go up to LH he was out of this world at SM, the best i have seen him, this toney fight is like watching SRR. Roy seems to be going on too long when he said he would never do it, shame, he is mega rich but a fighter is a fighter i guess.
yeah at SM he was just insane. even at LH he was deadly. i wish never went up to HW tho. it ruined. tho i guess he really wanted that belt and its pretty amazing that a guy who started at jr MW won a HW belt.
sugar ray is better but roy jones is right up there. for instance at the peak of his career, sugar ray was 128-1-2, only losing to lamotta. He also never took a 10 count in 200 fights, he only suffered 1 TKO. Roy Jones is still a legend though no doubt.
exactly, people forget how ripped and big for his size roy use to look, dont remember this lean and cut roy running around these days, this was the real roy, buff and ridiculous handspeed/power
Roy Jones Jr is the one of the modern greats, he had so much talent and a pair of the quickest hands in history. If he didn't get disqualified against Griffin all them years ago then he could of gone to have a record equal to that of Rocky Marciano. Roy Jones was completely unstoppable in his day
@crewe4eva yeah I believe Roy Jones Jr was underrated because of his questionable chin but I think he was a little close to being as great as old timers such as Ezzard Charles,Sugar Ray Robinsons and others. Roy was never really defeated during his prime and I wouldn't count his DQ loss.
The prime of prime fights for Roy Jones came against Merqui Sosa some people may not of heard of him but damn he was a hard bastard and Jones made him look like a child.
Well he was hiding in his backyard and only willing to fight bums that Frank Warren hand picked for him.
I bet my life Calpussy would have not had a prayer against James Tonny .He would not even want to be in the same room let alone same ring as a Prime James Tonney.Calpussy would have been knocked the fuck out by lights out Tonny.
Now this is what you call a real fight, between 2 Big name Champions at their Prime and Jones winning.
Though few would've guessed it at the time, and some would dispute it today, I feel this fight turned out to be the pinnacle of RJJ's career. Sure, he had other nice showings after this, but if you want to talk about when he was at his absolute best, this fight gets my vote.
though toney lost this fight, he's very underated. toney doing this time was the best pound for pound. and he's doing great in the heavyweight division
The ref, Richard Steele, got booed becaise he has been involved in controversial stoppages. Most notably, he stopped the Taylor-Chavez fight with four seconds left in a fight that Meldrick had won.
Love fights like these where somebody's O has to go.

Hey. I just got word that in late 2010 or mayb sooner, JAMES TONEY.VS.BERNARD HOPKINS MITE HAPPEN AT CRUISERWEIGHT.
it wont b an exciting match, but it would b interesting 4 me coz i dont look for excitement and dust-ups in the ring.
Hopkins would win, as i think that Toney has aged badly and is a walking heart attack
This fite should have happened at 160 IBS, and i still wud hav said Hopkins 2 win.
Hopkins would out-work toney and see his punches easily, thus scoring points on defense.
