Catchy song, but the message is the bothers me. Ed is saying, "Hey terrorists, I'm really sorry I offended you. I didn't mean to make you mad" I don't know about you, but after a terrorist kills thousands of innocent people, I don't apologize to them. The message is weak.
Hmm you would have to ask the NeoCons who purported to transmute America's Foreign Policy from that of the Founder's non-interventionism to that of the Straussian's Preemptive War Manifesto.
Bombing and overthrowing other nations for fifty-years might just create a few enemies along the way.
@TheChantic hey just a word of advice.... dont worry so much on the chord.. like a, d, etc.. just watch the video over and over and youll understand what hes doing.. ive only been playin guitar for not even a year and a half... did wonders for me!...ps.. first learn the shape then you can do hammer ons and such after
My favorite BNL song, and that's saying something! You're right in thinking of the airport, but it's actually about 9/11. "Is this a news report or a trailer for a motion picture?" Now visualize the towers coming down and you can see the connection. I wish this was just me being terribly insightful, but Ed mentioned it on the BNL website.
Ed, my youngest son is getting a guitar for Christmas, and we both want to play like you when we grow up.
As if maple syrup, Rush, hockey, lumber, maple leafs (the actual product of the tree, not the team), ginger ale, bacon (the round kind), Strange Brew, Moosehead, Moose, Don Cherry, Triumph, Dave Bidini, etc; weren't enough, we have you guys. Canada rules.
OH NOOO!!! How embarrassing! ;o) hee hee. My goof, and thanks to Gajijiba for bringing that to my attention. Remember, I am just an Old Gal, and as my job exhausts me so thoroughly, I must use as my disclaimer that I have not been to many live concerts nor seen many videos, so was unaware of who exactly it was I was watching. *Blush blush* Still, excellent version, Sir Edward!!! ~~Kay
I have to tell you, I absolutely LOVE your version of this grand song. More "Bathroom Sessions", please! :o) I heard this particular song whilst whiling away some rare spare hours in Barnes and Noble last year, and was influenced into purchasing the album. Yours is a wonderful acoustic version, and I dig your energy! ~~Kay
hahahahah. while you're right in saying it's "his" version. technically it's just another version of something that is already his. I mean, that IS the ONE and ONLY Ed Robertson From the band Barenaked ladies :D he just did an awesome acoustic version of it =D
To be honest, I like the album version better. Ed just doesn't seem to capture the feel of the piano part with his guitar. Also, I do think an electric guitar is important to the feel of the last verse. I still like this version, but not as much as the album version.
I like this part one too but for some reason it reminds me of the air port..long lines and warning signs at the airport..all the food is served with plastic utensils (not sure about them saving lives)...the part about taking off your shoes. gotta take them off at the air port..I dont know the first time i heard that I thought of the airport...got any idea what it means?
They are talking about the airport. I believe they are poking fun at all the daft security measures being brought into place to help battle terrorism...
"We will never lose, if we remove our shoes" I think sums that up.
They've been my favorite band since 1991 (I was 6 haha), and their new albus never disappoint! I love this song, and I'm loving the bathroom sessions :)
YES!!! This is one of my favourites from the new album... great chords, great vocals, FANTASTIC lyrics...plus that feel of the acoustic guitar all alone, no other instrumental accompaniment, is awesome. Bravo to the band for such a long, successful career, and here's to the many years to come. Can't wait for the next album!!!!!!

I love this song, especially the verse;
"Long lines, and warning signs.
Think of all the lives
saved by plastic knives
It's naive but we make believe,
We will never lose
if we remove our shoes"
