  • Hi Col, have you also noticed that this user channel4squares who sent you messages on this video that his account has been suspended?

  • @channel4squares You can't get clips from tv ark anymore. You can watch it just like on youtube

  • Hi Col. Have you noticed that tv ark have now got your 2 channel 4 break fillers from 1984?

  • Higher quality grabs from this sequence (and some video) - both taken from a better-generation tape than this, are available on "The TV Room".

  • Hi Col. In the trailer of the secret policeman's ball, the man who says good evening Mrs Yeti's loose creature, is it John Cleese?

  • @Visonu Yes.

  • William Hurt was the star of Altered States

  • this was the norm for breaks here in the Ulster tv region, anyone remember the Train Journey video they used to show with the FOLLOWS SHORTLY graphics over lapping..

  • Alice, based on Martin Scorcese's film, was bloody hilarious!! wouldn't mind seeing the intro again. It was set in a diner in the mid west, wasn't it? Not 'downtown'.

Memories of C4 when it had ad breaks...without ads, and showed decent programmes.

  • Great clip with those graphics - I remember those days of Channel 4. However, does anybody know what the piece of music is that's being played? I remember this track well & was one of my favourites at the time and it is one of the few 'break/filler tracks' that I haven't yet been able to identify. My guess is it's from the DI Music Library altho any info would be welcome. Thanks!

  • I am sure I remember watching the first episode of Alice; C4 was new to Huntshaw Cross at this time. However, what seems strange is that there would have been a programme preceding Alice at this time; C4 did not expand its weekday opening until 2:30pm until October 1984 and until then Alice was often the first programme at 5pm.

  • @tvarksouthwest Channel 4 Racing should have been transmitted that afternoon and all that week from Epsom but because of the Thames strike this couldn't be covered so Channel 4 transmitted a film instead called Three Men and a Boat instead.

  • I'm not doubting that it would've been shown if Thames were unable to insert adverts. I know they went on strike in 1984, but not the exact date. Only col2006ie can answer the question of where this was recorded! :-)

  • Two strikes sounds right. Loads has been documented about the TV-am strikes, but almost nothing from Thames or other ITV companies... I think you should write an article about it! I'm fascinated with such.

  • @filmnet Thanks for this; I do happen to know that Thames were on strike from 27th August until the resumption of transmissions on 3rd September 1984 with News At One, but went on strike again from 17th October until management staff had been able to put out a service entirely staffed by management. Thames did still show commercials during this time, as well as programmes from other ITV companies, but couldn't sell on Channel 4. Normal service resumed on 5th November 1984, but LWT stayed on.

  • @filmnet I happen to remember Channel 4's schedule on that week because the repeats of Blockbusters first series had come to an end on the previous Friday afternoon and so Alice was due to begin on that Monday afternoon; also, the film Forever and A Day was shown the next afternoon because Channel 4 Racing was due to come from Epsom which Thames were going to produce and so this couldn't actually be covered because of the strike.

  • Actually, this was shown only in the London area on 27th August 1984 when Thames Television were on strike, and so consequently Channel 4 were affected in the London area as ITV companies used to sell the advertising airtime at this point.

  • This may have rarely been seen in the Thames/LWT region, but was commonly seen elsewhere, especially in the smaller regions (Ulster, Border, Grampian, TSW, Channel) where they found it difficult to sell spots.

  • Well, I would like to confirm that this clip was transmitted by Channel 4 on August 27th 1984, the date when Thames had been on strike in the London area.

  • As I explained in my earlier comment, ITV companies used to sell airtime (and carried the unitary signal) on Channel 4 and so, consequently, Channel 4 would be without commercials and therefore no revenue, so don't think that just because this was shown in the smaller regions, far from it, but this also occurred should the relevant company be on strike. I should know because I used to live in the London area at the time.

  • ive seen this on the tv room

  • Interesting stuff going on with the Channel 4 symbol - a good way of ensuring that *something* was happening on screen.
