1: The pianist is Ralph Berkowitz, not Emmanuel Bay. Ralph Berkowitz, who died in August of 2011 at age 100, was Piatigorsky's regular accompanists for many years, as well as a faculty member at Curtis and Tanglewood.
2: I don't understand how anyone could "dislike" this transcendentally sublime performance. String playing simply doesn't get any better than this. Sadly, I've come to expect the Youtube audience to include a fair number of ignoramuses.
@cellolove7 This came from the "Heifetz and Piatigorsky" DVD. The footage was shot in 1953 (I believe) and was supposed to be made into a movie short which featured Artur Rubinstein, Jascha Heifetz, and Mr. Piatigorsky. Unfortunately, much of it never made it to the theaters. Fortunately for us, the film was saved and is available on DVD and here on YouTube.
could you please also send me the sheet music for the cello and piano accompanient please? my brother plays the cello and i play the piano and my parents would love it if we got to play this together
The pianist is Ralph Berkowitz, who was Piatigorsky's accompanist from about 1940 until his death (and he's mentioned in the film). The film was made around 1950. Mr. Berkowitz is still with us at 97, and he still plays and teaches.
Thank you SO much for all the Piatigorsky videos! My teacher (a graduate of Curtis and Juilliard) greatly admired Piatigorsky and recommended that I watch and listen to him play.
This is really great!

Elegance and ghostly, ethereal images seem to drift out of this music. As Wagner said, there are no words for this.
It is simply perfect.... human perfection.

which waltz is this?
gigie101 3 years ago
It's a famous Sentimental Waltz by Tchaikovsky, there are lots of arrangements of it. It's in E-minor. Hope this helps!

Piatigorsky was a great musician and his tone reminds me of Maple Syrup DARK, SWEET AND RARE.
Thank you for this video.

Piatigorsky was more than just a magnificent cellist; he was a marvelous person. I had the pleasure of studying with him.
