hey Col... I have a couple of these Fero rods but finding anymore at £3:00 is a chore mate,as for asking at the till its like talking to a Brick Wall...(My apologies to any brick walls reading this) but you know what I mean, great bit of kit, add a pack of Tampons from the "99p Store" and tube of vaseline, and you have one cheap and S*** hot fire lighting kit.
i have the same one and lol the same had some trouble with it at first but ow i carry handy pack of tissues and it works first time now just strike it on to some tissue and up it goes, i use it to light my wood stove in the mornings with fir cones cotton pad and the strike
@ColinOutdoors Cool, I am from the west of Scotland... You seem pretty cool and seem to know what your talking about keep up the good vids. Nice work:):)
i have one similiar i will post a vid soon but im having trouble it wont scrape of magnesium but it will strike i just cant get anything to catch the sparks someone plz help
@usnavysealsguy Hi mate, well as long as you get sparks then its a good fire steel, use cotton balls as tinder to land the sparks into and it should work great
I need to try that. I bought one off EBay that looks just like that for $2 US I had a lot of trouble lighting a pile of dryer lint on fire. I went and got my LMF steel and started the fire in 30 seconds. I did not try scraping off some though. I payed $12 US for my LMF Army model but it works every time. I carry a cheap one on my EDC and the LMF one in my kit. I had to epoxy the rod back in on the cheap one cause it fell out while in use.
@wb5mgr HI Colin, Hold the firesteel in your left hand you will get more sparks. It's the way the striker is machined. If you hold the striker in your right hand it has a rougher edge. Love your vids mate. cheers. John.
That is a nice rod. I really like how apparently easy it is to accumulate some scrapeings. Everyone here in the states is caught up with light my fire. I have one and love it but there are obviously other alternatives that might work better in a perticulare situation. Thanks for the good vid.
Forgot to mention if you file/whetstone the striker you can get alot more sparks, but using the spine of an opinel works the best with this fire steel, give it a go hard and fast stroke you'll see what I mean, I may make a video to show :)
You can pick up firesteels off of ebay for $1USD shipped. Much bigger then (4 1/2") either of those and they work like a traditional steel not like the one in this.
nice one , as you say you can`t go wrong for £3 , i recently upgraded to a LMF in which the rod is 9mm thick , should last quite some time , i also got some maya dust as well
Looks like a good inexpensive firesteel. 3 pounds is about $4.75. But then the postage from the UK would be more probably.
Light My fire is 16 pounds in the UK? it's about $17.95 in The States.
I found a length or ferro rod about 8 feet long that was about 1/8 inch across, I bought it for $5.00 and have made about 50 2.5 - 3 inch firesteels from it. I've superglued then to kydex sheaths, I've put deer antler handles on them and I've put them in every kit I have or make for friends.
@hoosierarcher Nice one my friend, sounds like you have found a great massive fire steel and I really like your idea of antler handles and kydex sheaths.
Hi Colin , I spotted this last week and thought the same as you. For £3 you can't go wrong. I also bough a new 750 ml karimor flask for £5. The staff are terrible but some deals are worth the hastle. Keep up the good work mate.
I don't know if the brand is available outside the US but this last Summer Coghlan's started selling firesteels. Similar in size to the Light My Fire Military version for well less than half the price. I'm also familar with misch metal rods, I get them at GoingGear(dot)com. He has a great selection. The striker is just as important as the rod when it comes to firesteels. A good striker can make a lot of difference of how much spark you get.
ah! sports direct, amazing shop i got a pair of headphones from there the other day. airwalk, there pretty cool. also i have a vid of "testing" their helmets. ^^ have a nice weekend
we have one in cambridge and you are right, the staff don't know anything, however it is a great place to occasionally check for some fantastic bargins!
craghopper kiwi trousers £10 down from £35 was pretty good,
with karrimor, they used to be a fantastic brand, but sports world now owns them...
for example, my parents had a cheap karrimor bag for 15 years until it broke.
i got a karrimor bag and i had to swap it after 3 weeks, 8 months on and it is almost broken
@n1ck3o7 I love the Craghopper Kiwi trousers, I wear them alot, 10 quid is a great price I will need to check them out for that. Sorry to hear you Karrimor bag not lasting,
I use this very fire steel and you don't have to do them shavings, just use more pressure to get a good lot of sparks :) Lit countless fires with mine!
Keep up the good work, I actually look forward to coming on youtube and seeing you've posted a new video.
You can also buy this same firesteel though branded differently on sale from time to time on Meritline for 1.49 us. I've bought a couple and they are great. "Make the journey worthy of the destination"...Laurie
@videokid001 Lol, I totally agree with you my friend, they are not the best of places to get piece and quite in, the iPod will drown out the noise for sure :-)
@WHITECOYOTE65 Well don't think of it as rights taking away, if they were it happened along time ago. @adamanime2 yup, I've been buying and using cheap chinese made firesteels for some time, comes around 4-8$ shipped. And guess what... they do the job great.
The trick to using a mischmetal firesteel is to strike it fast with a good amount of pressure. There is no need to making the scapings. The sparks that it throws are molten globs of metal and stay lit longer than a traditional ferro rod.
I got a good fire start like that for Christmas, I can't remember the name to save my life, but I've been using that thing everyday since then and I love it. Love the videos! keep up the great work!

Oh and just to add, with the mishmash ferro/mag devices the trick is to do it hard and fast! Oooo errrr missus!
