I love that you're an Aussie. Awesome when Aussies get out there and show 'em how. Love the work as well, Mate.

Lol this is an interesting video.. I just don't quite understand the point of painting artwork on the canvas before you cover the entire thing with foil.. (the cat).. It seems like that portion was a waste of time hahah.. :P

Can you tell me if the only reason for using the bitumen was so that it could wiped off later to allow the silver to show through? Exactly what did you use to to remove the bitumen, I can't quite make out what you say in the video.
Can you tell me if the only reason for using the bitumen was so that it could wiped off later to allow the silver to show through? Exactly what did you use to to remove the bitumen, I can't quite make out what you say in the video.
This may have been explained, but I may have missed it... is there a avoiding streakiness/problems with dry/wet brushes when painting the foil?
Also, when layering, do you need to worry about the first layer rubbing away from the foil as you paint over it?
With other glossy surfaces, I've tried using setting agents on the first layers, but have found that this usually just ends up wiping away the first layer anyway, as it doesnt grip well to the slippery surface. :-\
owy X3 I put the volume up cuz I couldn't hear you but when you grabbed the foil it hurt my ears T-T lolz oh well really nice idea I saw the newer version too :]
Hi Gary - this was very inspirational. I couldn't find Bitumen in US so I just used brown acrylic stain and it worked well. I used canvas to put it all on too. Mine ended up being much more feminine (wish I could post a pic but don't know how here). Anyway, don't care about the music one way or other - just loved the technique and mine was totally different in the end but enjoyed the technique. Thanks so much. lchristoffer.
This is a great technique and thanks for taking the time to share this. I love how you use regular materials and suggest alternatives. I'm so sick of artists highly recommending particular and expensive brands to use in mixed media.
I LOVE the music! Just my cup of tea.
Thanks for the inspiration and I hope to see more videos from you soon.
hi, so nice ti you showing yours techniques,i m french by teh way so excuse for the bad scribing....bref, i wanted ti know here can i buy bitume, and if teh result is as nice without ?

PS. Gary is not "a homosexual" but a beautiful young gay man with more taste and talent than anyone can shake a stick at. Put that in your pimp pipe and smoke it! Lol. Done.
The whole time I was waiting for the cat to be uncovered again! It was so cute! I don't get the reason for using the bitumen. Doesn't that make it stink? It was interesting to watch you do it. I too hated the music, hit mute every time the music came on. Aside from being annoying music it came on way louder than your voice. I notice this in a lot of videos, maybe YouTube does that to you. No music needed, just talk us through it!
it looked like you were working on a cat painting before you put the foil over it. was that just a painting that you didn't like so you made something new over it? im def going to try this technique

Very impressive love the technique, For turpentine there is multiple brand and they have mutiple chemical combinaisons. So if you can tell us wich brand you use to replicatee the same effect
nice lesson capricorn, I made some textured compositions using textile collages, see my "transylvanian night" and "the circle of life and death in the mirror" for instance.
I looked it up: Bitumen - A History, Written by Zayn Bilkadi
The Sumerians called it esir, the Akkadians iddu, and the Arabs of Iraq sayali or zift or qar, but in English, it is simply "bitumen" or "asphalt" - that thick dark liquid you instantly associate with the smell of freshly laid pavement, and the first petroleum product ever used by the human race.
I don't think we put asphalt on our cars here in the US, just on the streets. But I'll go to an auto parts store tomorrow and find out.
Gary...Love your work and you are such an inspiration! One question...what is bitumen and what would it be called in the U.S.??? Wishing you the best!
Loved it. Thanks! In addition to buying papers at the local craft store, go to whatever store near you that sells wallpaper and ask for their discontinued wallpaper sample books...they are usually free since they are headed for the trash bin anyway. I especially like the anaglypta...or embossed...papers. They are thick and can take a bit of sanding and abuse.
Gary as usuall another great tutorial. Love your work. I would love to know how on some of the others you keep your paper from warping. Love ya and your work is awesome. Really inspiring and such a great free syle of just letting go and trusting your intuition. Fabulous
Cool effect...great tutorial once again. Loved the little piece that you used for the substrate tho...kinda hurt to watch you cover it up. ;( Happy painting to you Gary
aw hated to see the kitty go, that's one of my favorite stencils of yours, probably because it looks like our new kittens, but this is awesome. I used to do something similar but you have my mind racing with new ideas! thank you!
Yes the bitumen is basically just 'Rust Paint protector'..sorry for confusing you! ;) I need to learn to be more articulate when talking on camera LOL..i still get nervous and the first few attempts i might as well be talking another language LOL
Thanks for answering my question!...I'll get some rust paint protector. You are doing a great job with your videos, I love them!!, and your accent is very cute!! Looking forward for more of your videos!!! :)
Great technique, Gary, thank you! The the gold paint (with brush) that you used ... I've not seen anything like that in my area (US). If any of your viewers know what it is here, I hope they'll let us know. Once again, great video, Gary, thank you!!!!
What was the last item you mentioned? I can't understand what you said. It looks like something in a can with a thick brush. I would love it if you would post the needed materials in the side bar. Your accent is LOVELY but not alwayys understandable. =D Thanks for your lessons. As always I enjoy them and I have been using some of them as well.
Sorry i just made a materials list! It is bitumen, the stuff you can use to paint on metal to stop rust. You can buy it from a store which supplies anything to do with cars etc. Hope that helps
What is ....bitamin, please?

Great technique, Gary, thank you! The the gold paint (with brush) that you used ... I've not seen anything like that in my area (US). If any of your viewers know what it is here, I hope they'll let us know. Once again, great video, Gary, thank you!!!!

What was the last item you mentioned? I can't understand what you said. It looks like something in a can with a thick brush. I would love it if you would post the needed materials in the side bar. Your accent is LOVELY but not alwayys understandable. =D Thanks for your lessons. As always I enjoy them and I have been using some of them as well.

It sounds like you say, "bitterman" Is that it? What kind of substance is it?
daligoddess2006 3 years ago
Sorry i just made a materials list! It is bitumen, the stuff you can use to paint on metal to stop rust. You can buy it from a store which supplies anything to do with cars etc. Hope that helps

Yes! The description is perfect! Thanks so much for the list in the side bar! Awesome of you to do.
