Good god, man. This is the scariest , trickiest trip to elementary school I've ever seen. The Warriors had an easier time bopping their way back to Coney Island!
@beyo2120 the S-series International began with the 1979 model year & the S-series is what they used in this film. Either it is a 1979 or 80 model. Granted the film had an older flavor to it than '80, but I have no reason to believe it is any older than the copyright date
why not just go to a school that isnt miles and miles away then you wouldnt need to get on that old clunker and watch yer buddies trying to commit suicide everyday.
The fact they have a little black girl with a T shirt that may say "Bus Nut" and imply as one who merely likes buses, but in the adult world who made it they KNEW EXACTLY what that phrase implies give it a racial slant...Unless a black guy directed it,then it's plain sickening...
no it isnt, it helps the kids in pre-k and k and even gr.1-2 to show them how important bus safety is.. if you found this boring try and find the "death zone" video..
That style of International came out in late 1978 or early 1979......I remeber when I was in Junior High back in 8th grade, our Schools district bought 3 new IH S series International Thomas.....They had the 392 V8 wit 5 speed manual. An International Loadstar Thomas was bought at the same time....345V-8 with Allison 4 speed Auto....this was probably right at the time of transition from the Loadstar model to the 'S' series.
I recall more dialog involved in "Bus Nut." What seems to be cut from this: Before Dad leaves, he tells Bus Nut Bobbie, "Remember to look up and down before you cross the street, dear."; after Mom helps Bobbie into her cumbersome coat, she says, "Take candy from a stranger, sweetie."; Mrs. Harris, before she opens the bus door for Bobbie and the gang, rolls her eyes and thinks, "Jesus, doesn't that little weirdo ever get sick?"; Mrs. Harris orders Bobbie to stop staring at her in the mirror.
That bus was built more like the early 1980s. The International was one of the first "S" series that came on the market. In this video, safety comes first! When a bus driver puts his or her stop arm out, motorists are supposed to stop, but sometimes they don't.
I really think the wear on this vid looks fake. I mean, should there be stripes like that, they look like this was shot in 1930 and then the movie was used every day for the next 80 years.
I drove Blue Bird School Buses in Calgary, Alberta that had an earlier style than that bus had. The units that I drove that had an earlier style than the one in the video were built in 1977-78. The one in the video was probably built in late 1978 or later. Hope this helps.
Yeah, the School Bus safety videos are monotone to say the least, especially the older ones (case in point). The ones we currently use aren't much better
Niyou77... do you EVER think before you speak. Nevermind, that was a dumb question. Sorry, I lack an education nor am I a productive member of sociey. GROW-UP, AIR HEAD!
i am sure they have, as i say, they are very nice, lookswise, but why use such an unqualified design, why not have stories behind a volvo b7l or a mercedes citaro or some american mark if you wish, but just in something designd for town trafic? hopeing for a busdriver or someone else with an answer to reply
hi luzern76, thanks for answering, im happy someone did. i took a look at those mirrors you mentioned, i guess i was wrong, you realy can see a lot. but still i am wondering, why the rest of the world uses rear engined busses (od mid engined) and american schoolbuses use front engines?
is there a specific reson or is it just a tradition? (i have never seen them in use for "normal" service as coaches or town buses) and also, you write that front engined buses are fine for rural or suburban areas, but i always imagined these busses operateing in urban areas, are there also other bustypes for use in the cities? however, thanks again for answering and have a happy new year
There are rear engined school buses, but front engined school buses are the most affordable. Many school districts are funded by a property tax levy. Poperty owners finance the local school system which includes transportation costs. The bigger the budget, the higher the tax rate. In larger cities, the money is taken out of the city budget. Also, private companies operate school buses as well. Some districts choose to hire these companies. The companies also want low cost buses.
thanks, i didn't think there was a difference in costs... well, now i finally know why american schoolbuses have got bullnoses. thanks and all the best.
Some schools just don't want to spend the money, EX. I was going to a BRAND NEW school, it was even finnshed yet, with a price tag of around 2.3 MILLION dollars, and we where riding old blue birds looking just like that. I must say though at the end of my 8th grade year have the busses where new BRAND NEW blue birds.
You can see the mirrors from 5:21-5:25, and at 4:13. Also, front engined buses are fine for rural or suburban areas. Transit style (flat front buses) that you refer to are better for city driving.
(i'll give it the credit of being old on the high floor and the door but you stil operate front engines busses, don't you? do americans hope there busses will run over some children?)
my goodnes, high flor, front engine, big, obscureing bullnose, manual gearbox, hand operated dors and worse only one, this thing has got all characteristicas of a long distance coach (with the exeption of the interior design of corse) and it was built especialy for service in a town, worse in one school district, where it never leaves town? who thoght or didn't think when the designed these things?
Just because she was interested in School Buses doesn't mean she was "beaten as a Baby" or "Stupid". Have you not been reading all of the other comments? Obviously you all are interested because, you not only must have watched the video... but POSTED COMMENTS! So... what's wrong with you? Maybe her Bus Driver is someone she personally looked up to and just happened to be a Bus Driver. When you were kids, or younger didn't you want to do what your "hero" or person you looked up to did?
Actually, you're wrong. She's not going to get an education, which discounts her as a productive person in our society. Bus drivers are high school dropouts or people who can't speak English.
you are wrong about that where i live witch is polk county florida ever one from white black mexican drives a bus here and you have to have a high school diploma and must have 5 years driveing in your personal car and you have 1 week class room training and 8 hrs of on road training than you can become a bus driver so you wonder how i know this well lets just say that i have drove around in a 84 passenger school bus and 84 kids is not all you can get on tham i use to have 107 that road my bus
i love school buses and wonted to drive tham ever since i was prob about 7 or 8 OH NO I WAS BEATEN AS A BABY. wrong guess again my mom grandmom aunt and outer memebers of my fmaily drove a bus and guess what i drove one of tham busses and yes i liked it and no i am not a driver no more cues i am driveing big rigs now so yall get a life the ones that are bad mouthing school bus drivers cues you dont know the shit that thay go threw to safely get your snotty nose brats to scool and home
Plus... it's not really hard to drive Double-Clutch... but it does take some practice, especially in a School Bus with all the other things you have to do
Yeah... I agree, but alot of School Bus tranny's are synchronized. Very few are unsynched. It's still easier to double-clutch to shift, but not required. The Bus in the video is probably one of them. My Mom and Gram's buses were the same kinds (1980-1989 model IHC S model chassis)
On a funnier side note, I sent this video to a few friends, including my Boss and told her that Mrs. Harris reminded me of her; as a Joke. She replied back that I reminded her of little Joey Adams, because no matter how many times she yells at me I still don't listen.... LOL! Just wanted to share
I've driven Thomas school buses. Unfortunately, the quality has gone downhill over the past 8-10 years (wiring, switches, etc.) The Freightliner hoods also crack easily. Thomas used to build quality buses. It's a shame, really.
If you've never done the job... then who are you to comment. Alot of us are College graduates (like me) who could be making $50,000 or more a year. Alot of us do this because someone in our family also drives or drove School Bus (again, like me). Last comment was VERY assenine, but everyone's entitled to their opinion
My mom has been a schoolbus driver for 10 years and she says that seat belts on school buses would do more harm than good in a crash. They would trap the passengers in their seats and the driver would have to go through and make sure everyone got out okay. Think of the nightmare that would be in a bus full of say kindergarteners. It's just easier without them. School buses are actually the safest form of transportation there is anyway.
i agree with your mom thay need to take seat belts out of school buses. to make my point lets say thay ran off the road in to a lake with tham kindergartrners looks like to me that the kids would drown i dont thank one person can pull over 90 kids out of a seat belt and all wile the bus is under water i dont thank so so yeah out with seat belts
Be thankful School Buses have now what they do. When I started School (1990) buses in PA weren't required to have crossing gates OR Stop signs. In fact, out of our fleet of 20 buses at our School, only 1 had a stop sign, until like 1993. The bus in this Video came from Welsh Equipment which contracted in the State College School District before State College did their own buses. The district used this bus for a LONG time... I've actually seen it in person. It's nice for being a 1979 model.
They don't put belts on school busses because they don't need them. The seats backs are high and cushioned incase there is impact with something, and the cabin is set high, so passengers are sitting above the impact if something was to hit the bus. With seatbelts, the passengers would have to go through the hassle of taking them off in the event they need to get off the bus in a hurry. Kids today would be using them to beat each other, strangle each other, and break glass.
Nice how this video can teach Bus safety, but how about seatbelts? This video's old but still, how come they never thought of putting seatbelts on a bus with 15+ children that drive through streets where anyone can hit the bus and injure or kill someone? What the fuck prevented them from putting seatbelts?
I remember stick shift buses. My concern now and in the future is the use of seat belts on the bus. Kids don't like to put them on, and you can't force them to! It's a problem!
Yeah, in a modern car you just shift from gear to gear. In a big bus or truck, you had to manually synchronize the drive shaft and the transmission by waiting in neutral or reving the engine in neutral between gears. It takes practice to learn to shift without grinding.
be going downt he road......... 1st..... then go into NEUTRAL then 2nd..... then NEUTRAL then 3rd lol.... be like ROLLING for a few sec when you go back into neutral lol before the next gear
That's it. Clutch in, shift from 2nd to neutral, wait a couple seconds (knowing exactly how long is the hard part--and, if you get it wrong, the gears grind and won't go in), clutch in again and shift to 3rd. To downshift, you rev the engine in neutral, which also takes practice to get just right. It's kinda fun once you get the hang of it.
Why don't school buses have seat belts?

I've driven Thomas school buses. Unfortunately, the quality has gone downhill over the past 8-10 years (wiring, switches, etc.) The Freightliner hoods also crack easily. Thomas used to build quality buses. It's a shame, really.

at my school district, we have blue bird busses. They are like the newer 2 year old or so ones with the engines in the back.

If you've never done the job... then who are you to comment. Alot of us are College graduates (like me) who could be making $50,000 or more a year. Alot of us do this because someone in our family also drives or drove School Bus (again, like me). Last comment was VERY assenine, but everyone's entitled to their opinion

A bus driver seriously?

If cars go underwater, you have a problem. Maybe they should not have seat belts either?
johnmartinez123 3 years ago
well tell the truth no car bus truck are safe no matter how you look at it

They're not gonna put seatbelts on school buses. That itself is a major safty issue. Whats next seatbelts on transit buses?

hey come to polk county all the new busses have seat belts
someone343454 3 years ago
Nice how this video can teach Bus safety, but how about seatbelts? This video's old but still, how come they never thought of putting seatbelts on a bus with 15+ children that drive through streets where anyone can hit the bus and injure or kill someone? What the fuck prevented them from putting seatbelts?
xcryinginrainxx 4 years ago
thay dont need tham cues the bus is made of steal
someone343454 3 years ago
I remember stick shift buses. My concern now and in the future is the use of seat belts on the bus. Kids don't like to put them on, and you can't force them to! It's a problem!

wow lol School bus's were stick shift back then? and im shocked they didnt have stop signs on the bus back in 1980 like we do now!!
cmarlow330 4 years ago
Ohio had them stop signs on school buses as far back as the late 60's
SheriffGeneralStoner 4 years ago
Yes, they were stick shift. The really old ones (and maybe this one too, I think) had unsynchronized transmissions that had to be double-clutched.
christopherdork 4 years ago
Un Synched Trannys?????
Double Clutched?????
cmarlow330 4 years ago
Yeah, in a modern car you just shift from gear to gear. In a big bus or truck, you had to manually synchronize the drive shaft and the transmission by waiting in neutral or reving the engine in neutral between gears. It takes practice to learn to shift without grinding.
christopherdork 4 years ago
wow....... it just looked like she was just changing gears and wasnt going back to neutral
hmm..... Interesting though!

cmarlow330 4 years ago
She kinda hesitated between 2nd and 3rd long enough to be double clutching--it goes about that rhythm.
I can't actually believe I'm relieving this part of my youth. Thank you for indulging me in it. :)
christopherdork 4 years ago
I just cant picture that
be going downt he road......... 1st..... then go into NEUTRAL then 2nd..... then NEUTRAL then 3rd lol.... be like ROLLING for a few sec when you go back into neutral lol before the next gear
haha your welcome
cmarlow330 4 years ago
