There are always going to be people who think that they've figured out when Christ will return. Had they predicted that my own birth would occur in 1988, they would have been correct. Now we have people saying that Christ will return in 2012. But the fact is that only the Father knows the day of Christ's return.
Everyone's God is the one true God. There is no logical reason to believe yours. Christ wrote nothing. That fact alone should give you pause. The stories about his life and death are conflicting as you might expect since they were written by anonymous authors a century after his death. There are so many contradictions in the bible and so many immoral acts condoned by your God. Try reading the Bible critically. It is not a moral book. It has human flaws and errors.

You also need to keep scripture in context. God was talking to Moses when He said "thou canst not see my face", not Jacob. Meaning that it's entirely possible that God revealed His face to Jacob, but not to Moses.

The Christian God is compelling to you because that is what you were taught was correct. I am sure there are Christian religions, for example Jehovah Witness, that you believe are 100% mistaken in their beliefs. You believe they are cults. The only difference between you and them is that they were taught another version was correct and yours is wrong. The fact is that no account of God is compelling because they all lack evidence. You see, the problem with you atheists is that you for some reason imagine an Old-Jesus Looking guy in the clouds when the word "God" is said. You need to actually think of God's being as similar to that of atoms, energy, something immaterial. Jesus said he was the SON OF GOD, and "Son of" is an ancient literature phrase that describes something in natural-material form (Son of perdition, son of darkness etc). So the "Son of God" term shows that God is immaterial.

Pretend a deity had to exist to explain our existence (science disagrees) - that still does not prove you have found the true religion. It is not possible for all religions to be true. They can all be false! If you don't think religion can be evil perhaps you were born after 9-11.

I didn't say that it was not a believer's burden to prove the existence of the God, god or gods they believe in.
I did, however, state that the burden of proof is on you to, in the least, explain your statements.

Fair enough. You want to support my position that religion, especially the Christian doctrine here, should be dismissed on moral grounds. Religion teaches us to have unquestionable obedience to Christ or else - we are destined for damnation. Fear of hell is the tactic to gain followers. Religion has always been stifling to science, rejecting scientific findings that conflicts with doctrine. Religion teaches us we are evil by nature and must look to Jesus for salvation.

I have been following the conversation for awhile, and have found that it's accomplishments are naught. If worshiping were for the naive, you would be among penitent. You are among the 2.3% of people worldwide that claims "God does not exist". I know that demographics prove nothing, but I find it very hard to believe that your minority are the only rational minds on Earth. Wisdom.

He said "that's like saying only 2.3 % of the population graduate from college, so the ones that don't graduate must be smarter". I said "Yes son, that is exactly the kind of argument he is making. That's a heck of an argument you have going Sunshine. Any evidence to back it up? By the way, what God are you referring to? Hate to confuse you, but there are many gods to choose from. Perhaps since your moniker is Sunshine you believe in one of the dozens of Native American Gods, perhaps the Buffalo God. Choose your poison, they all make about as much sense as the tooth fairy. Incidentally, what happened to the glorious return of Jesus by 1988? Stuck in traffic?

@ohsnap31 : There are many gods, you're right. I could view my cell phone as a god if I really wanted to. But I speak of the true God. Specifically, Jesus Christ.
There are always going to be people who think that they've figured out when Christ will return. Had they predicted that my own birth would occur in 1988, they would have been correct. Now we have people saying that Christ will return in 2012. But the fact is that only the Father knows the day of Christ's return.

Everyone's God is the one true God. There is no logical reason to believe yours. Christ wrote nothing. That fact alone should give you pause. The stories about his life and death are conflicting as you might expect since they were written by anonymous authors a century after his death. There are so many contradictions in the bible and so many immoral acts condoned by your God. Try reading the Bible critically. It is not a moral book. It has human flaws and errors.

Learn to read critically. The Bible is full of contradictions. God orders killings and sacrifice but says Thou shalt not kill. Jacob said "I have seen God face to face". God said "Thou canst not see my face". The Lord is good to all (Psalms 145:9)
"I make peace and create evil: (Isaiah 47:7). I can go on and on. Full of contradictions. Genesis makes no sense at all. Read it. They could not give even a make believe heritage any logic, the descendents don't add up.

@ohsnap31 : (1) We on our own have absolutely no right to say who lives and who dies. God does have that right. A death at His hands is not against the commandment.
(2) You can't have peace without evil. They go hand in hand. The Bible says there is a season for everything.
(3) You did not give me a reference for "thou canst nto see my face", and since I don't know it off the top of my head, I have to go looking for it. I'll address it later.

@ohsnap31 : Whose to say all of those women weren't there? Each account mentions Mary Magdalene and Mary. Mark mentions Salome, and Luke mentions Joanna. Just because Matthew and John don't do the same doesn't mean they weren't there.
You also need to keep scripture in context. God was talking to Moses when He said "thou canst not see my face", not Jacob. Meaning that it's entirely possible that God revealed His face to Jacob, but not to Moses.

The gospels don't match but they contradict each other, either. If the gospels where to be word for word equal, then why did the church cannonize 4 gospels instead of one? Each of the 4 focus on different aspects of jesus and each of them where made for a specific audience during the time.

The Christian God is compelling to you because that is what you were taught was correct. I am sure there are Christian religions, for example Jehovah Witness, that you believe are 100% mistaken in their beliefs. You believe they are cults. The only difference between you and them is that they were taught another version was correct and yours is wrong. The fact is that no account of God is compelling because they all lack evidence. It may be fun to believe but it is not a fact.

@ohsnap31 actually, my belief in God is from academics. Social science clearly makes it fact that no believer can become a Martyr if they didn't believe what they dieing for. Every single cult in history has martyrs dying for their beliefs right? What caused those beliefs? How can anybody believe that their leader rose again after a roman crucifixion? Look at how his apostles died, they seriously believed Jesus did, and you need to show something compelling that explains how.

So you want me to give an academic explanation to describe how a follower believes in the irrational. Okay, here it goes. It appears to me there are sound evolutionary reasons for believing. For example, why are people gullible and fall for scams? Because it is very easy for humans to believe. Where did this come from?
For millions of years we evolved with the predisposition to be safe, to believe there might be something in the woods even if we had no evidence to verify it...

You atheists go on so much about "this is fact.. etc" yet you guys never actually fill in the academics that debunks laws in physics that show a God has to exist. The whole universe is a working system, everything in it (from the stars to our cells) functions all together to keep the world alive. Doesn't physics say that orderliness can not come from nothing?

You have to explain as to how nothing creates nothing (since you say God doesn't exist) and if you don't reply that with any academics. Explain what the laws of thermodynamics and the theory of relativity and also show us what Jesus actually did to get his apostles to believe him

In the first cause argument, it is the believer who is suggesting that nothing created God. God is suggested to be an uncreated being. That leaves a little bit of explaining. As for science, there are theories as to the process of an expanding/contracting multi-verse that is supported by recent discoveries.

Your post makes it look that you are completely oblivious as to what i'm saying about "nothing creates nothing". It's from Physics. You see, in the 2nd Law of themodynamics it explains that ENERGY has to be transferred to create an actual system.. and the theory of relativity says that an outside energy had to transferred.

Isn't time part of the natural universe, and doesn't science say that time and natural laws were not in existence before the big bang? So since God is before the big bang, how can he have a beginning? Wouldn't that mean he is not supernatural because he wasn't before the big bang. Numbers don't have a beginning either, yet i doubt you don't find the existence of numbers irrational, do you?

Illogical to have it both ways. Irregardless of timing, either everything must have a cause or not. If you argue God existed before the big bang so he had no beginning, you can then give the same justification for the universe, it existed before the big bang and therefore had no beginning. You use the word "science" but fail to explain why the prominent scientists of our day overwhelmingly reject your argument that a God is necessary to explain the universe. Read Hawkings, etc.

The universe began AFTER the big bang, that's actually scientifically fact that the universe had a beginning. And what prominent scientists are you talking about, i gave you scientific laws and theories made by Newton and Einstein, what scientists can you show me that are actually more credible than them? Stop pulling out baseless arguments, and go do some research.

The matter of the fact that is shown here, that it is actually more irrational to say a God doesn't exist, because Physics has already mde it clear that it is impossible for the universe to have started all out of random. Learn to read man, and start borrowing science books from the library.

As the Nobel Prize-winning physicist (and atheist) Steven Weinberg said, "Of course, the word "God' can be given any meaning we like.
