One of the best duells ever in movie history. The proof that you dont need a gun to utterly destroy someone. Even if I, with my poor skills, had to drop it onto someone.
I spend months, MONTHS, practicing this after I heard it. I watched this video over and over and over, almost half of the views are mine. I'm here to tell you my friends that I have perfected "The Crave", the piece which Jelly Roll Morton plays after "Silent Night"
If any person of color walked into a such a room in the early or mid-20th Century and behaved as Jelly Roll Morton was depicted in this film, he would be swinging from a tree like strange fruit before his black fingers had the privledge of touching those white keys. This pair of scenes may be a fantasy, but it is also an insult history and to the memory of Jelly Roll Morton.
@jhasjkfhkjs Jelly Roll Morton is showing he can play so fast that the cig doesnt burn all the way down to the wood, so 19 shows him with a cig he can play so fast not only can he do the same thing but light it with the heat from the strings of the piano
lmao at the white people in the beginning "hes a nigger!" now if someone said that to me when i walked in somewhere to play music i would smack them with a brick
@JamesPriceJohnson looking forward to it, my friend... let me know if you are up for gigging anywhere between Detroit and Denver... I have some people in that expanse who are always looking for insightful and inciteful musicians to liven up the venues...
@JamesPriceJohnson that's not sad! it just means you have an extra few decades to one-up the rest of us!
also, I have contacts all over the world... have your parents get ahold of me, I will give you all the contact information you would need to further your musical academics and career goals! Peace and long life :P
@KnightOwl2006 if you are referring to black people saying that, we actually mostly say "nigga"(not meant to be racist) rather than "nigger". go watch the video about the white teacher that called a student a nigga. funny video, but you'll understand what i mean.
@JamesPriceJohnson It was the 1920's, man. He's lucky he was allowed on the boat.
JRM was once told, when he walked into a bar, that drinks for "his kind" were $50. He laughed at the attempt to get him to leave by whipping out a thousand bucks in cash and buying a round for the house.
Morton wasn't an ungentlemanly boor as portrayed here by Clarence Williams the 3rd. he had no reason to disrespect Nineteen like so, wasn't very sporting of the ol' chap,eh?
@trelimastoura if you listen to the narrator, he mentioned how light Jelly's hand is on the piano. He caresses the piano, he's like a butterfly. A cigarette's ash is very fragile. Jelly Morton's trying to show how light he plays by putting hte burning cigarette on the piano and the ash never broke.
i cant help but laugh everytime i see the title of this movie now! i just think of the end of his leg flying off the ship when it explodes at the end! LEG-END hehe
but seriously, its amazing its made me cry a few times, mainly the music! i love this movie it is my all time favorite film EVER! more so than roger rabbit! :-)

BTW, Jelly Roll did not invent jazz. He did popularize it and change it, but he was too young to have invented the sound.
