First saw MTV at KHOG at Univ of Arkansas.... no one new what to say...What was it? kinda like the first time to eat fast food, or see a microwave, or calculator, and even like the first time to see someone using a cellphone...Everyone was talking about new tv channel.
I was only 12 years old when Mtv started and I can remember being more than excited about it. I use to write down all of the videos that were being played.....Ha Ha Too Funny!
Man, I don't know if younger folks realize the huge impact MTV had on every aspect of popular music and culture at the time. The video became as important as, even secondary to, the song. I think a video is less critical to the success of a pop song now, which is not such a bad thing....I think one lasting impact of MTV is that it really accelerated the rise of cable tv, marking the end of the "big three" network dominance of television.
@arolindsay what I meant to say was, the video became as important as the song, and sometimes the song was secondary. it seemed like some pop stars started writing songs with the video in mind.
@arolindsay I'm only 13 and i realize how much MTV has changed it A Huge Difference the stuff they put on are stupid -.- i have my own channel of the 80's usually when i come home from school i turn on the tv and turn to that channel and i have fun...like honestly i don't wanna know about girl getting pregnant at a young age ;o
This is "totally awesome"!!!!. I don't remember seeing the debut of MTV in 81..I was barely 10 years old at the time and my parents still didn't have cable TV. But I do remember watching it at someone else's house for the first time in 1982. We eventually got MTV at my house in 83, and I don't really remember watching anything but this channel. Now in 2011, I can honestly say that I havn't tuned into MTV in probably 16 years, it morphed into just another reality show channel...sad!
It's easy to blame Hip-Hop for MTV completely selling out and becoming a channel with pretty much no integrity, instead of recognizing it was the owners of the channel themselves that decided to appeal to the masses for larger profits & completely sell out.
what were you tube fans thinking when that came out at that time? The first music video and then such artists like Madonna, Michael Jackson and so on. Pretty amazing back then huh? The end of an era....
If they ever decided to show the first 5 years of Mtv again starting on an August 1st again, exactly the way it was original shown, it would cause a second Revolution...follow Martha, Mark, Nina, and Alan on twitter, and let's start that second Revolution...
Amazing that this upload has been viewed only 3000 times in a year and a half and the 30th anniversary of MTV is in less than 24 hours. People really must not care about it any more. I see no comments praising the removal of music videos and the introduction of reality tv. Also amazing is that there have been fewer than eight comments on this upload this whole year. Mine's the first in 3 months! And I would conisder this upload a rather important one showing the first minutes of MTV. Amazing.
Ironically over hyped media crap, internet spam and pointless reality killed the video star! Please let the past stand forever! I'm too scared of the future. I wish I would have lived through 1989 instead of being born in it! but whats the use our favored musicians of this era will be in their 60's and 70's in a couple more decades :( I would go back in time to destroy the mickey mouse club on the disney channel of the 90's, that would be a start.
I am 18 going to be 19 and I WANT TO see more music videos on MTV however, I enjoy SOME shows they show but i do not see the necessity of playing the same show the next hour or day...instead they should show some music videos
Music to Vomit by is no longer recognized as Music Television. They removed that from their logo earlier this year. Too bad they didn't realize the audience that made them popular in the 80's abandoned them when they abandoned us with reality, rap and the ending of actually playing music videos 24/7. I would love to do an old school MTV.... if only I had the financial backing...
@iluv80shorror Rock was invented by blacks, not whites. And early rock and rap is great. But new rap and new rock and pop all suck. So you're no help with your comment that misses the point..
@iluv80shorror I can reply whenever I want, and you're not even on topic. Why not stick to the topic you brought up, like I did, instead of insulting me. I wasn't insulting you - I didn't actually say you were being racist.
@Mr2009Truth when did i insult u?, i said u were late on that reply. i posted that comment over a half of a year ago. i dont feel like arguing but all im saying is that mtv sucks and it is not like it used to be. sorry i offended u. i appologize.
OMFG why can't they have a retro MTV channel showing all the good old music and having new stuff but underground and not just shiity rap and hip hop by god i hate that shit more than anything else on this planet they need to revert MTV to what it was meant to be MUSIC TELEVISION not RRTV rap and reality televion ugh horrible disgusting garbage can't even call that shit music
@DeathSithe92 There IS VH1 Classics. BUT, What I want is a good station that will play CURRENT good music. There are a lot of bands out there with good stuff out, and many of the older bands still going with new material as well. Where can wee see THOSE videos? Duran Duran, Adele, La Roux, Maroon 5, Bruno Mars, and a slew of others in all genres. There could even be a few times set aside for an hour of country or rock or alternative or whatever. There can be a website where people can request.
@DeathSithe92 I firmly believe that there is a conspiracy involved with the death of music culture in the U.S. Not any tinfoil hat conspiracy about aliens or illuminati, but a deliberate degradation caused by people that favor control over liberty.
I remember watching this as a little kid. Cable was new in our house and there was a lot of hype about this MTV starting, me all sat around and waited for the picture to appear for the first time on that channel. Then we watched it for hours, and for days. We played it while we did anything or everything. When we go a VCR a few years later, we even recorded it.
I bet those recordings are fun to watch now... Programming on Mtv now is garbage... all Hip Hop and those stupid ass "Reality" shows full of Whiney ass college kids with low self esteem.
you're so damn right!!! I first watched MTV in 1991 when I was 8 years old and it was so much better than today. there was just MUSIC and not such unneccessary documentations like "my sweet 16" or more stupid things. who the hell wants to see anything like that on music television?!
